How many counties? Has be made it to all of them? Which ones did he miss?

Beto hit all of the counties (254) by August or early September.  In fairness i think there were a few counties were it was a handful of doors being knocked on and a small town hall.  I recall one photo, perhaps in Iraan, where the townhall maybe had 12 people.

Its a bit of a political gimmick to hit every county but if you can convert just 5% of the Cruz voters in those counties, it can make the difference.  You also might convince the local editor to say a few nice things about you in the local newsletter.

So, what exactly has Beto accomplished?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beto_O'Rourke

When I was in the eighth grade I was on the student council.  My dad asked what we did.  I started telling him about electing officers, taking minutes and so on.  He said, "Well that just perpetuates your existence.  What did you do for the students not in the student council?"   Of course, we had done nothing but meet and "perpetuate our existence".

So, what has Beto done?  I mean, besides being a live-in nanny and having an accident while drunk?

At first it looked like this was going to be about Cruz’ voting record, then veered towards fake chain email territory. I look forward to getting this same story from my aunt.

I saw Beto speak yesterday at the Mendenhall Community Center in Houston.  250 or so fervent supporters plus curiosity seekers and exiting EVs like me in attendance.   The Betophiles seemed as if they were waiting on The Beatles to show up and when he did actually walk across the street to meet the crowd they really did go into a frenzy.  I listened to his stump speech and he's good at what he does.

I'm not a Beto guy.  I do, however, appreciate his attitude and style and it is great to see our system of campaigning on display.  People hate on our system quite a bit and there are many flaws; but to see a candidate in public and on the pavement at a non-descript voting location was a great reminder that we are blessed to live in a great country where anything is possible

Tahoe is literally everyone's stupid racist aunt who talks about the "good old days" and tells weird stories that have nothing to do with literally anything at all.

btw, I joked about Cruz statewide GOTV bus tour only going to Houston and Dallas.  Here's an actual thing on that from Cruz -

You can't convert even 5%, despite the Cruz being the most unappealing human in Texas.  That's the nature of the beast that we have created and politicians and the media feed.  I bet someone like Ojeda in West VA might have a chance to convert some of the Texas Republicans.  Can't see a non-verteran, progressive having a chance at converting any of them.

Raise your taxes, open borders, take your guns, men assaulting women in bathrooms, disrespect the flag and kick Jesus out of your schools? Clear choice. The Lord’s choice. Stop socialism, defeat Satan. Vote Cruz, keep Texas tough, keep us Red and covered by the blood of Jesus. Amen.

Yep, Texas may be the most politically divided state in the union when it comes to the urban/rural divide.  Did Beto really hit every county, even Loving?  If so, that's definitely a gimmick move.

It may be a gimmick, but also the right thing to do.

Might be a gimmick, but some of the people in those counties probably have never seen a statewide Democrat candidate in decades.  Just the chance for them to see/meet/connect with Beto could win their vote and/or bring some apathetic voters or closeted Democrats out of the woodwork.

I'd argue it's not entirely a gimmick. You learn a lot about a state visiting every county. Beto has a familiarity with the whole state that Cruz doesn't.

Well, even if Beto hadn't done that, he would still have a familiarity with Texas that Cruz doesn't have.  He's a Texan.  Cruz isn't.  Cruz would seem uncomfortable in groups of just about every type of Texans.  Although, I'd be hard pressed to find any groups in the entire nation where he would be comfortable.

It's a gimmick, like Ted Cruz' gimmick was being the tea partiest tea partier until that changed and his gimmick was to switch to capitulation/adoration of Trump, and then whenever there's another politically expedient gimmick, he'll switch to that one.  He has a gimmick of saying that currently the country is divided because the left is full of rage (and soon they may become violent).  He's about to have a gimmick about how taking more babies away from mothers and putting them in Wal Mart cages is just good freedom and Mericanism.

Tribune article summarizing early voting:

Anyone in Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, Abilene? Wondering who's coming there. I see a number of Abilene friends supporting Beto on Facebook and I know we had that 800 person rally there.

I had this thought last night while watching what little I could stomach of Cruz's rally.  Why is some Canadian dude on my TV trying to tell me what is and isn't Texas?

If you live in Opposum Hallow and can buy a slice of pie from the dog catcher's wife for lunch, would you pay in U.S. dollars or moonshine? You would probably pay in moonshine, that's what Trump is trying to accomplish.

Seeing Beto signs in their neighborhoods undoubtedly motivates spiteful conservatives (aka, "conservatives") to go out and vote.

I shared this in early voting thread but my small town that voted 75% Trump in 2016 had record first day turnout.  Anything is possible.

When I said that visiting every county was a gimmick, I meant going to EVERY county.   If he had stopped at 240 or 250, I think it would still would have been accurate to say that he visited every county, but good for him to stick to the promise of going to each one.  I doubt he learned much in going to the final 10 or so, but I would hope that some of those counties appreciated having a senate candidate talk with them even if only for an hour.

Texas Monthly hit it out of the park on this one:

Quote

Throughout my career of covering politics, I have heard so much hyperbole and spin from both Republicans and Democrats that I’ve become somewhat calloused to it. But there were so many half-truths, insinuations, and lies told by the speakers in the Toyota Center that it is too mind-numbing to render. I’ll leave most to the fact checks. But one I’ll note. Cruz accused O’Rourke of voting for a $10 a barrel tax increase on crude oil. O’Rourke actually voted against a resolution to block Obama administration consideration of an increase in oil taxes. O’Rourke never voted in favor of increasing oil taxes. It would be fair for Cruz to say O’Rourke voted against halting tax increases on oil, but to say O’Rourke voted to increase taxes on oil is a prevarication. That’s a fancy word for “lie.”

Quote

In his own speech, Cruz broke with other Texas politicians to support President Trump’s ultimate border security measure. “We need to build the wall,” Cruz declared to cheers from the crowd. Every mention of illegal immigration by any speaker immediately agitated the crowd. Especially exciting were allegations that O’Rourke favors open borders. “He pretends to be a moderate, but he’s really an open-borders left winger,” Trump said. O’Rourke has said he opposes open border policies and has worked with Texas Senator John Cornyn on improving border checkpoints, but O’Rourke also says he wants to repair a broken immigration system to make it more humane.

In the end, the Toyota Center event was a spectacle of isolationism and selfishness. The evening was not a display of FDR or George H.W. Bush’s honest differences. It was the worst of us—Pat Buchanan channeled through Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. And on more than any issue, that is why O’Rourke has done so well this year.

So making a promise and then actually completely following through with it is a gimmick?

Heard about this sign yesterday. Check my Instagram today, and a girl I went to middle and high school with paid $5,000 for this banner. Holy shit.

We were good friends and went to 1 or 2 HS dances together, though I've only run into her 2-3 times over the last 20 years  My wife was supposed to go to a concert recently with her and bunch of other girls. The rest of them are liberal and HUGE Beto supporters.  On Instagram her post said that it's $500 per hour to fly the banner and she is asking for donations to "support capitalism" because "Beto and Socialism SUX!".  Sent a few texts around to mutual friends and everyone is horrified.

Oh, and she's an Aggie. Shocking, I know.

Tell her that capitalism means you pay for your stupid sign with your own fucking money.

Or send her this:

“I hate socialism!  When you break it down, socialism is just one person coming up with a stupid idea, executing that idea without consent of the group, and then demanding that the group to pay for that idea.  Amirite?”

Then, when she agrees / likes that post: “That’s what I thought, you fucking socialist.”
