Texas Softball 2026 - Running it Back.

Something I'll also say about Mike is sometimes he costs us an out in a game being too aggressive as the 3B coach but he also steals runs too.

Tonight sending Nichols on that infield base hit are the type runs you find ways to score. I think the speed throughout our lineup is in the heads a bit of Tech's team.

Texas takes Game 1 of the WCWS, 7-3.

Texas P Teagan Kavan is making a case to be an all-time great. MVP last year, now 1 win from repeating as champs.

With Cit out there against a strong lineup, we'll really need clean IF play again. I'm expecting a 5-4 kind of game and just hope we do enough to close it out.

I’m really enjoying watching this team, but I’m not that familiar with softball. My general understanding is that softball pitchers can throw more and with less rest than baseball pitchers. Can the girl who threw so well for us tonight throw a lot of pitches tomorrow? If she doesn’t throw tomorrow or comes in, but doesn’t throw that many pitches tomorrow can she start and throw most of or all of game three if we have to play a third game?

#10605

The tech fans were fine, both before and after the game. Softball is just such a different vibe. Even this year when we played TAMU and OU at home, the atmosphere was far less antagonistic than football or baseball.

Yes, she can relieve tomorrow & start 3 if necessary.

as much as I hate slappers in this era, Nichols has been pretty good in the field, timely at the plate and fast as shit. I'd prefer having just one slapper if we can help it.

Because softball throws with a windup at the shoulder, which is a natural capability of the shoulder, as opposed to the high velocity arm whipping of the elbow/shoulder in baseball, elite softball pitchers can throw for marathons on low rest without significant concern for injury.

However, softball pitching involves a ton of leg drive and wrist spinning, so with more pitches/less rest, you start to worry about losing velocity and losing spin rate/movement. That being said, it took Canady almost every pitch of the WCWS and into game 3 of the finals last year before her pitches started to get flat.

Now as far as Kavan throwing for us again tomorrow....a batter's success rate starts to go up the more they see the same pitcher, especially consecutively. That's why it's so difficult to get through the entire order more than twice. Our #2 pitcher lives at the bottom of the zone, so it makes sense to let her try to get through the order once or twice, let them adjust to the low strike zone, then bring in Kavan who dominates the upper zone with an elite rise ball.

As far as game 3 if it gets that far, Kavan will start no matter how many pitches she might throw in game 2 tomorrow and will pitch for as long as they can't hit her.

I haven’t read the whole thread and didn’t watch the pregame show, but was much said about the ladies line dancing in the dugout between games of the doubleheader on Monday?

Dancing like they hadn’t a care in the world, ho hum, just another day at the office.

I knew then and there that Tennessee was in big trouble.

Our girls are cold blooded assassins.

I like their chances tomorrow.

This is a very good point. Glasco getting backlash for conceding so early but this tells me what he thinks about Kavan. He knows they aren't scoring many on her.

Holly Rowe right now basically: 5 runs is nothing. You got this.

Gerry Glasco (basically): you are dumb. 5 runs against Kavan is insane.

The year of the home run 🔥

In game one of the Championship Finals, Mihyia Davis hit the 37th home run of the #WCWS, setting a new total home runs record! Katie Stewart and Mia Williams went on to score home runs, making the current total 39. How many more will happen? 👀
#10615

How bout moving the fences back 10 feet? Some of these home runs are dinks. In fact go ahead and scale up all dimensions including bases and mound by 5%.

I have been saying this since last season. Mile has built a great lineup. Hrs are fun, but manufacturing runs and putting high pressure on the defense is the way you win tough games. Texas had 4-5 infield hits last night, Nichols stole a run on of of them. Kayden starts the game off with a bunt letting Stevie do her thing in the 1st.

people dig the long ball, but line drives and speed never go out of style in softball.

On the flip side, we've played our best ball with our backs against the wall.

Since the regionals wrapped up, Texas is now 1-2 in non-elimination games. (Todays win against Tech was the 1 win, and the losses were to ASU and Tennessee).

In elimination games they are 6-0. (ASU, ASU, MSST, Nebraska, Tennessee, Tennessee)

Mike needs to gaslight the team into believing they lost game 1 so they can close it out tomorrow.

Yeah, but the cold-blooded assassins can taste the championship. Even though they have been great in back to the wall situations, the title is right in front of them. They’re not defending last year‘s championship, they are going to take this one.

#10618

As crazy as this sounds, I think Gerry may be coaching for his job now and his daughter’s job in the future. As I understand it, Tara is the defacto HCIW on their staff. Tech has spent a lot of money to create a championship or bust roster. If they don’t win, they may have to make a change to keep the money flowing.

And yet the pursuit of home runs is taking over the college game and the elite teams have fewer and fewer slap hitters. It's turning into beer belly softball.

The stepping out of the box rule being more strictly enforced has led to a decline in slapper's, but good teams still find a way to have 1 or 2 for their speed.

I do think Nichols (for instance) will get coached into swinging away more - I could see her end up like a Henry or Mia at some point. A lefty with crazy speed who can also hit away instead of slapping. But she's only a freshman

Gonna need to keep runners on the bases for Stewie, I wouldn’t be surprised if she just gets a free base the rest of the series.

It's a wonder her and Mia Williams get pitches at all. Both should be just intentional walks at this point.

I was perusing the reddit postgame thread and our speed was mentioned a lot as something mindfucking Tech and likely to win us the series, because we can go super small ball with Henry, Nichols, Maloney and sometimes Goode and Altmeyer and then Tech will start expecting it and we swing it over their heads.

It's a super versatile team - not just Stewie's HRs in this WCWS, we've scored on bloop base hits, infield hits, stealing home, etc. And Mike is aggressive at third - it was no different sending Nichols on that infield base hit than when he sent Atwood against Tennessee on Wells' shallow single and she got thrown out. Sometimes you're successful, sometime you're not. But we don't coach scared, like Gerry did yesterday

Atwood and Kavan are the best battery in Texas history. I know Reese has had some struggles at the plate, but they have a real connection that raises Kavan's confidence. It's important to her that Reese is her catcher. You might not ever see this again.

We've had some good ones too

Willis and Osterman
Hooks/Ogle and Luna (Hooks was 2010-2011 and Ogle was 2012-13 for Luna)
For a bit, it looked like Iakopo and Elish would be the next great duo and then Iakopo committed battery to Elish's face in Tuscaloosa and then COVID ruined what was an OKC team

Pass up as in HR record? Definitely

Reese is at 74 right now

After last night, Katie is at 61 and has never had less than 13 HRs a season in her career (13, 17, 31). if she doesn’t any more this season and only matches her freshman year, she’s still going to tie the record

She’s in the perfect spot in the lineup too, I’d absolutely keep her at 2nd next year too, in between Henry and Vivi. Swan (if we get her) or Wells can slide into 4th and 5th (Atwood and Goode’s spot) - baseball knows you put your best hitter 2nd to get more ABs. Henry is such a good table setter and Vivi is clutch, so you walk Stewie for someone who knows how to hit the ball with runners on

We get that freshmen in too that can rock em. I like the idea of having your HR hitters spread throughout lineup if you're going to mix in speed, especially at the 9 spot

Same.... Nichols has been money when she gets on. Love her and Henry's speed.

Even Maloney had the shot over the LFers head in the first inning for two runs. Slappers had a decent day yesterday.

I’m pretty sure Spearman also got pulled in the inning after she let that ball go over her head in the bottom of the 1st. She grounded out in the 2nd and then got replaced in the field for the bottom half of the inning and never went back in

When the umps are calling strikes “balls”, you’re going to get more HRs, because pitchers are going to have to go for the middle of the strike zone to get a strike, like TK’s second HR given up yesterday.

Like I always say, there is no longer a reason to have humans calling Balls & Strikes.

I was sort of bummed when Spearman ended up at Tech, as she has some solid skills. Obviously don't know what she got paid, but I hope before the weekend she's lamenting not having picked Austin.
