I saw some polls in the fall with us as at 2 and Tech at 1.

We bring back almost all important pieces, except for Mia Scott, who was seemingly our only hitter that was good at hitting offspeed (our kryptonite under Singleton). New hitting coach and some exciting youngsters. Positional battles will include 3B to replace Scott as well as what happens with CF/LF. Everything else is pretty much locked down, assuming Martinez is back to form after her ACL injury. Pitching, after TK, should also be interesting.

  • We will downgrade at 3B with Scott gone, but the freshman duo of Lawson/Crabtree were elite recruits. I would expect a similar season to Mia's freshman year - good at the plate, average defensively.

  • I would assume an upgrade at 1B, defensively - loved Joley, but she had a rough time fielding her position. But we will miss her clutchness at the plate too. Hannah Wells will bring a lot of pop at the position.

  • Don't forget Texas was a revolving door of shitty DP options all season long. The options are way better this year - Wells can DP when she pitches, 1-2 candidates depending on how the OF rotation shakes out, whoever loses the 3B battle between Crabtree/Lawson. I swear to God, if I have to see Vic Hunter take another swing at DP in a close game, I am going to break my TV.

  • High hopes that EE can get the offspeed timing for our hitters going good again. He is an elite hitting coach.

  • TK is obviously the ace, but it is hard to overstate how much improved Cam was by the postseason. Think she slots in at #2 and Citlaly at #3, with Brenlee as the change of pace lefty we have all been dying for. Not sure how much Wells will pitch in her freshman year while she acclimates to high level hitting, while also playing 1B/DP. Here's hoping Citlaly has a bounce back season.

  • Our OF situation is very interesting - we basically have 4 true outfielders and Stewie for 3 positions. Maloney and Henry seem like they'll have their positions locked down as multiyear starters, but then you have Stewie, Sneed and Altmeyer for that last spot. Sneed's bat was so good in the fall.

  • Vivi was injured in fall ball 2024 - she's had over a year to recover, and there was a brief time heading into the postseason that Mike said she could play if they needed her, but he wasn't going to burn her medical redshirt.

One thing to note - our non-conf is not as difficult as year's past. This team doesn't really need to be thrown in the fire, but they also can't coast on their trophy and fancy new championship sticker on the OF wall (gonna love looking at that all season!) But Mike seemed to hint with his quote about being the hunted that the team's mindset is getting to OKC again and winning another title.

The season starts difficult - Nebraska and UW twice, but outside of that, maybe only Stanford/Arizona will be a challenge, but not sure OKST or Baylor will be much to write home about. Mike understands now how difficult SEC play is: at South Carolina, Ole Miss, aggy, at Bama, OU, at Georgia, at Kentucky, arkansas.

We took some lumps in SEC play last year, as we acclimated to not be able to play your least and still sweep, like we could in the Big 12.

The non-conf is good to get our freshman acclimated to this level of play, but also provide some challenges for our returners.

Not to be missed - Mike on Bordi’s eligibility

However, Texas coach Mike White said Tuesday, January 7, that Bordi still has a chance at eligibility this semester, depending on whether she qualifies for an NCAA's transfer exception. Bordi was originally ranked as the No. 1 pitcher in the country in the 2026 recruiting class after earning two Gatorade Player of the Year honors in her native New Jersey, but she reclassified to 2025 and enrolled early at Oklahoma. She did not play last season while drawing a redshirt.
She's kind of like an unknown at this point, but we plan on having her for sure next year in the program," White said. "This year, she'll more than likely redshirt (but) that's to be seen yet. We'll see what we're going to do there. But if she joins the team, great. If she's not able to play, that's fine, too!

I could see the DP position be revolving again this year. If Sneed is in the OF then Altmeyer is an option, Wells is an option, If jaycie plays good D at 3rd Lawson could be an option. Almost using it based on matchups and who is hot.

Yeah, but all of those DP options >>>>> Hunter and Quiroga

He kept cutting out in his truck at home depot (lol), but it sounded like to me like White had Stewie penciled in at 1B, relieving Atwood at catcher every now and again.

I think DP will be a mix of Wells/Stewie/Altmeyer/Lawson, depending on the lineup that day. Agreed, huge upgrade over what we've had in the past. VH still being on the team is bizarre to me, but maybe she just wants to be a longhorn.

So Stewie at 1B, occasionally catching (which means Wells will likely play 1B those days), meaning Sneed and Altmeyer are battling for the 3rd OF spot.

My money is on Sneed - she showed off some crazy power in the fall.

Stewie had a rocket arm too, so if we just get the same power and arm and move Stewie to 1B, I'm content.

Kavan and Atwood are #5 and 6 on Softball America’s top 100 players

Texas has 7 total - 5, 6, 22 Henry, 27 Stewie, 29 Maloney, 61 Vivi, 75 Altmeyer

Texas will see # 2-4 (Jordy Frahm, Pickens and Ella Parker). #1 is obvious

Generally, yeah.

Ohio State lost quite a bit and was #2 in FB. UConn lost Paige and was preseason #1

Florida was defending MBB champ and started off #3

Also this is just Softball America - we typically have Softball America, D1 Softball, ESPN/USA Softball media poll and the NFCA Coaches Poll

They raided the portal, they actually put an hypothetical offense behind Canady and a #2 in Terry from UCLA.

The players have to come together and the coaching has to get them to turn into a cohesive unit

One of my few fears going into 2026 is that Hunter will get some ABs that matter. I wish she'd portaled out, but not my call.

I think she will get some ABs in tournament play, but if she is still getting them once we start conference play, it means she can finally hit something other than the fastball, or no one else has stepped up and we've again got a DH problem. I think/hope we'll be ok.

All that glitters is not gold. Starting at #1 puts the monkey on their back, gets a ton of attention and additional pressure…..ending up winning it all is another matter and players can have injuries and some may not necessarily play as well as projected…..things change and there’s lots of time and games till June……so….we shall see. Horns need to just take care of their business.

Everyone is focused on Tech, but we of course added real firepower ourselves. Vivi is a massive addition and hopefully fully offsets the loss of Mia's bat. Keep everyone healthy and avoid a Stewie slump and we should overpower most teams. Then it gets down to pitching and matchups in the postseason, as usual.

This is also the type of freshman class coming in that OU used to use to make OKC runs all the time. Pair an elite freshman class with a serious squad of upperclass talent (Kavan, Atwood, Vivi, Stewie, Henry), solid college players (Maloney, Goode) and rising stars (Cam)

Yes, White seems to have recruiting dialed in, and now girls from all over the country want to play for us.

Most of our roster is Texas players or Midwest-adjacent (Illinois/Iowa/Missouri) players. We only have 2 Californians and 4 players total from out west (Arizona, Utah, California). And then Bordi is the rando from NJ.

Compared to OU - 10 players from California/Arizona/Hawaii.

Me as well, but Tech did fill the biggest hole on their roster by bringing in an arm to take some load off of Canady. Now we will see if Gerry Glasco can learn to trust his bullpen when games really matter.

Texas still has the better staff - I will take Kavan, Salmon, Gutierrez, Gonzales and Wells (excellent ace, good #2, experienced #3, lefty specialist and a highly ranked freshman) over Canady, Terry and.... Spearman (3+ ERA in 2 seasons in the MWC) and some freshman pitcher/UTIL player from Oklahoma

The staff led us to the title last year - Salmon's outing versus Clemson in game 2, Mac's big day versus Tennessee, Cam and Mac almost getting the win in game #2, but keeping Kavan fresh for game 3

Js offers a great deal of insight into softball with facts to back it up. He does this in all Texas women's sports. I appreciate his knowledge. Just because he disagrees with a take doesn't make it gatekeeping per se. No need to bicker. Just move on.

Atwood and Kavan make SA’s preseason first team AA

Henry and Stewie make second team

Tech had 3 (Canady and Pannell first team, David second team)

I saw somewhere (Reddit, maybe) that Gutierrez had picked up a little extra velocity while pitching for the Mexico team recently. No idea if it's true, but it was suggested this newfound velocity differential would help sell her off-speed stuff.

Man if we can get freshman/sophomore Cit with that ERA around 2, and her sophomore year when she was at 62/19 K to BB, and and she can eat 90-100 innings, that would be so fucking sweet for TK not having to be the workhorse. Though she's fully capable. I'm still a Cit fan

#186

Cit's win over OU in Austin a couple years ago was (to me, anyway) a turning point in recent Texas softball history. The Sooner fortress didn't immediately start to crumble after that, but it gave us genuine hope we could play at their level when it mattered. More of that pitching from her in 2026, please.

Most of the P4 teams refused to play them this year. Everyone in the SEC, minus one school, made a conference wide agreement not to play them. I know they had to switch two of their originally scheduled tournaments to something else, because teams in those tournaments wouldn’t attend if they did. Look at the teams in the Clearwater and Mary Nutter tournaments and look at who they are actually playing. Their schedule is a joke because the P4 coaches got together and collectively decided to give them the middle finger.

With due respect, do you have personal knowledge of this ? $$$ is now the name of the game in college athletics, can't see a reason to boycott. Especially with the RPI/SOS boost to play them even with a loss.

Tech plays aggy 7 Feb in CS and play Florida St and Nebraska in Clearwater. Granted Mary Nutter does not seem to be strong competition.

I have no personal knowledge, but I imagine a hypothetical boycott comes from the news that Tech boosters were offering big money to other teams star players during the season (as early as April) to entice them into the transfer portal. One report had them even offering Atwood during the season.

Could be a blessing, could be a curse. Cit is a drop ball pitcher, and sometimes velocity increase equals spin decrease. One could argue that the drop ball and rise ball are less affected by this, but something to watch regardless.

2nd Team - Henry, Maloney

Also I am praying the Texas-Nebraska game(s) are televised somehow - #1 vs #9 to open the season? Kavan vs Frahm (Bahl)? Come on now!

I am assuming at the very least we will be able to stream these games from the ESPN app. Also, I will be shocked if Kaden Henry is not a 1st team all american this year. She should hit for a high average, and she is an elite defensive player. If a couple of these freshman can swing it as well as advertised, this team could be better than last year's by season's end.

Tech softball feels like the definition of trying to buy a championship they’re the new shiny toy right now. A lot of those #1 votes feel reactionary, especially with Texas returning so much and bringing in another strong recruiting class.

To be fair, Tech has built real buzz and they do have elite talent probably the most dominant player in the game so yeah, they’re going to be very good. Still, who gives AF, fuck em!

Tech is absolutely trying to buy a title, but there is no substitute in women's sports for team chemistry. We saw it ourselves in the early Mike White teams with Elish and Iakopo. Those teams were uber talented but did not get along. Texas seems to have great chemistry and that can carry them in tough games. I believe our staff will be good to really good, and they are deep. We know that we have girls that can hit. Replacing Mia both in the field and at the plate will be the biggest challenge, but we do get Vivi back and that is a huge get. As I said before, if we can get production at the plate from 1 or 2 of the freshmen, this team can be better than last year. Time will tell.

Yep, chemistry and coaching. A team of mercenaries does not always win, it’s really hard to both build chemistry and keep them motivated when they are getting big paychecks. And how Glasco and his staff manage all the egos

Credit Mike, he pivoted hard towards chemistry after the Oregon transfers tore apart the locker room and we watched players like Burke get paid and phone it in

When Burke was phoning it in, I wouldn't have been mad if she would have given me a call.
