So, was out and about yesterday doing errands.  Last fall, in the days leading up to the election there was this one particular intersection of 2 state highways I pass through.  On that corner, some carny was peddling Trump flags, etc.  The days he setup shop, there was always people there buying the damned flags.

Yesterday, he was out again with a new assortment of flags.  This time, the flags were some variety of Trump 2024, Trump Save America, Fuck Joe Biden, you get the idea.  Even had a huge banner (paraphrasing) Trump Save America Merchandise sold here

And there were people out buying that shit.  I can only imagine as Christmas gifts.

Don't forget myriad versions of the stars and bars.  Surprisingly, I haven't seen a Nazi swastika flag -- yet.

This is really handy, because it doubles as a list of places I never want to visit.

Very confused by Waianae, which is probably the poorest place on Oahu, and a place the locals tell haoles not to go.

I would love to see somebody make a rainbow stars and bars flag, and then see how many heads implode.

Gastonia is to Charlotte what Conroe is to Houston.

Here you go. Please do note the guy in his trashed out driveway holding up a baby for the camera while his pit bull looks on.

Eta more street scenes:

  • Be sure to zoom in on the football helmet mounted on the post.
  • Busted up Toyota Tercel with sweet Jeep and 4-wheeler in garage.
  • Even the beach looks trashy. Rotate and see beware of dog sign.

That is peak Waianae.  All the rusted chain link fences.

The Republican myth that big cities are somehow struggling mystifies me. Other than Memphis and Detroit, I can't think of another big city I've been to that isn't a better place to live than any of the pestilential shitholes on that map.

I gotta ask how is this map a win or lose? I see dems owning big cities and Rs owning the rest. I look at this map when liberals post it as a victory. I dont think it looks like you think it does. There is a reason a majority of legislatures and governorship are Rs. Be careful. There is a switching. 2022 is going to exaggerate it even more on a state level. BTW how are those big cities really doing? Doesn't seem well.

Holy shit. You’re very stupid.

“Doesn’t seem well.”

The places that are the economic engines of the country, where something like 80% of or GDP comes from?

Yeah….they’re pretty terrible.

Because they see Fox News bleating about how horrible San Francisco is with homeless people and needles and crime and whathaveyou.  Granted they have some shit to work on with the homeless (hi Austin), but they take it as gospel and therefore every city is San Francisco.

Yeah, gross overgeneralization and misunderstanding. Not every small town is like the Meth-lenburg communities in Appalachia, but you stop in enough of them, you start to see patterns.

Homeless people tend to cluster in places where they are less likely to starve or die from exposure

Yep. San Francisco is fairly predictable and consistent (COLD) with weather. Of course not cold enough to kill. Same with Austin (FUCK YOU FEB 2021).

I’ve lived in Austin most of my life and did live in San Francisco for a summer in the 90s and have always in the past liked to visit it every other year or so.

Based on my last couple times there, I won’t visit it right now. The city and its police have let the homeless situation get totally out of control to the point where riding the muni or Bart trains is not really that safe and walking the streets is at best unsettling and at worst not safe. I wouldn’t call it dangerous, but it’s definitely not a vacation spot either. Mentally ill people yelling racist shit at Asian women and kids on the muni while you tell them to shut the fuck up therefore diverting their attention to you is not what I call fun.

The repeal of the repeal of the camping ban has helped make sure Austin doesn’t suffer a similar fate. Not that it was ever even close to being that bad. But still.

Agree-ish.  I voted to reinstate the camping ban because I'm not a psychopath.

My best friends moved to the Bay Area (San Carlos) at the beginning of the pandemic and I've been there twice since then, both times going to the downtown area.  I also went twice growing up, so I'd like to say I have somewhat of a reference point.

From the pedestrian standpoint, the San Francisco homeless issue seemed on par if not slightly better than Austin.  Austin was bad for a while, hence why we said "fuck that" as a community.  I'm glad we were able to come together as a collective and decide what wasn't going to work.

Let's try that on a federal level.  Talk.  Try to work things out instead of just screaming at each other on the internet for the benefit of some morons who you hope vote for you to keep you in your place of "employment" for the next 2-6 years.

Well I will say I haven’t been there since spring of 2019 pre Covid. So I can’t really comment on it currently.

And I agree it’s actually more of a federal macro economic issue but one party has less than zero interest in addressing it.

RRISD board member goes on Steve Bannon’s podcast, asks for donations to fight censure attempt

Quote

Round Rock ISD board member Danielle Weston went on Steve Bannon’s popular right-leaning ‘War Room’ podcast Thanksgiving to ask viewers for donations, which she says are to help with the financial burden of hiring an attorney after her cohorts moved to censure her.

“Ma’am why are they hating on you down in Texas? Why are these school boards and school districts hating on you?” Bannon started the conversation.

Weston’s response: “Well, I’ll tell you what, they’re hating on me because I am representing parents.”

Haha Hialeah.

Nearly 100 percent Cuban immigrants (i.e., must vote R because Castro is bad) and probably the most corrupt local government in the country.

About a year ago, I watched a documentary on Cuban history, and it made me a little  more (not a lot, just a little) sympathetic to the Cuban-American closed-minded, slavish, cult-like conservatism. I mean, Bautista was a ruthless murdering son of a bitch, but so was every other ruler Cuba has had since the Spanish arrived. If their families benefitted from Bautista's corruption, well, the Godfather inspired loyalty, too.

No, what you see is hopeless, futureless rural rubes that don't have the sense to come in out of the rain (that is, move somewhere with some opportunity).

A pretty common thing among those who escaped brutal, soviet-style regimes.  And it's not just confined to those who were wealthy.

My FIL escaped Hungary in the 50s.

But, one thing that skews it is that he was here, as a white guy, albeit one with a thick accent and mediocre/bad english, and stayed in sporadic touch with those left behind.  So, not only did he see persecution and confiscation of private property (meaning, just regular people's homes, not estates) while he was there, he got a glimpse of their fairly miserable lives up through the 90s.  And his life was far from luxurious, here.  But, that was an American era that offered more opportunity than today.

In fact, that's an argument I need to spring on him today.  Do you think you would have had as good a life as you have had had you come here today?  Some of his earliest jobs in America were union jobs in steel mills.

Also, the rural areas would likely escort a homeless person to a city because a) the small towns lack the resources for mental health care and addiction and b) it becomes someone else's problem to handle.

It's not unlike the shuffling of refugees in war torn countries fleeing harm for safety (circular migration).

Oklahoma grows a shitload more marijuana than California, and consumes the fuck out of it.  And there are plenty of sketchy people buying it and taking it....somewhere.

Source: Cousin whose dad has a "small" operation of a couple of thousand square feet.  And his dad is still a Republican.  Cousin was giving me the rundown, and saying that nobody from the state/county really checks on a lot of the operations (he made it sound like every other farm was growing at least a little bit), that there's a shitload of out-of-state/out-of-country money flowing in to buy land/farms/operations, and a shitload of out-of-staters who are moving it.

He made it sound like a combination of a Mexican cartel town combined with Breaking Bad, only without the meth.
