According to an average of all 2023 Gallup polling, about three in four Americans said they identify with a specific religious faith. By far the largest proportion, 68%, identify with a Christian religion, including 33% who are Protestant, 22% Catholic and 13% who identify with another Christian religion or simply as a "Christian."

I don't think this is, uh, saying what you think it is.

Exactly. This is why I only make these comments in the privacy of my own home. Preferably in a locked closet and speaking in whispers. I can't afford to have a random person overhear me and change their vote.

Plenty of smart people are religious. I don’t understand it, but it is what it is. I just find them childish and gullible

It boggles my mind that so many Surly posters and the mainstream media cannot see the 100% obvious parallels between the Nazis and MAGA. I know few will read this, but here are the parallels. No excuses.

1. Similar culture from which emerged Nazis and MAGA.

-- We know about the German economic woes after WW1. But that’s only part of it.

-- But both NAZIS and MAGA emerge in culture steeped in Christian religion, conspiracy theory, pseudoscience, astrology, widespread idiotic superstitions, yearning for a past of mythic purity, etc. All amid a culture experiencing rapid technological change.

2. Great Leaders: A failed artist and failed businessman

NAZI-HITLER: Trash-talking failed artist enters politics.

-- Seen as fringe loser.

-- Few take him seriously.

— Still builds fanatical following.

MAGA-TRUMP: Trash-talking failed businessman enters politics.

-- Seen as conman celeb, TV star.

-- Few take him seriously.

— Still builds fanatical following.

3. Great Leaders: Attempt failed coup/insurrection.

NAZI-HITLER: Hitler attempts a violent coup that fails.

-- Hitler is tried, tossed in jail, writes Mein Kampf, released from jail.

-- Hero to the Nazis.

-- Seen as brainy, virile, tough guy

MAGA-TRUMP: Trump cheerleads an attempted violent insurrection.

-- Televised live on TV to the world.

-- Mainstream media call the event a “riot.”

-- Trump is not prosecuted and remains total hero to MAGA.

-- Seen as clever, manly man, tough guy.

4. Great Leader: Long rambling speeches, claim to make nation great again.

NAZI-HITLER: Claim they will Make Germany Great Again (MGGA).

-- Hitler gives long, rambling speeches at rallies and via radio.

-- Nazis will retrieve and promote the “Aryan Man,” the pure and true German destined to rule for a 1000 Year Reich.

-- These myths are celebrated and worshipped by the patriots, the “good people,” the true Germans.

-- Install National Socialist-Fascist regime.

MAGA-TRUMP: Claim they will Make America Great Again (MAGA).

-- Trump gives long, rambling, incoherent speeches are rallies and via TV-social media.

-- MAGA will save and promote the “Christian Man,” the pure and true American destined to rule the nation till the Rapture.

-- These myths are celebrated and worshipped by the the patriots, the “good people,” the good Americans.

-- Install Christian-Fascist regime, with a puritan theocracy as a bonus horror.

5. Identify enemies to blame.

NAZI-HITLER: Central enemy: Jews.

Secondary enemies: Communists, leftist intellectuals, modern artists, gays, etc.

MAGA-TRUMP: Central enemy: Immigrants.

Secondary enemies: people of color, LGBTQIA, leftists, educators, liberated women, various sciences/scientists, medical workers, environmentalists, etc.

6. Take control of courts and media; impose regimes of censorship.

NAZI-HITLER: Nazis judges give favorable rulings to make all the Nazi/fascism “legal.”

-- Nazi-friendly media crank out the fascist propaganda; other media eventually become compliant and go along.

-- Censorship widespread. Book burnings.

MAGA-TRUMP: MAGA judges give favorable rulings to make all the MAGA/fascism “legal.”

-- MAGA-friendly media crank out the fascist propaganda (Fox, OAN, social media).

-- Mainstream media, which enabled the takeover, eventually become compliant and go along. Hell, they will barely use the words “fascism” or theocracy to describe reality.

--  Impose regimes of censorship; ban books in libraries, will ban porn and much more speech/expression.

-- No doubt, book burnings are coming.

7. Get widespread business support.

NAZIS-HITLER: Give huge contracts to industrialists, tax breaks.

MAGA-TRUMP: Give huge contracts to industrialists, tax breaks, subsidies.

8. Take control of police, military, national law enforcement.

NAZI-HITLER: Took control of military rather quickly, then took the police, secret police, and built Gestapo.

-- Did various purges as needed to insure loyalty.

MAGA-TRUMP: They will take control of the police and local LEO rather quickly, especially rural areas. The military will eventually follow.

-- Bureaucratic purges, LEO-Military takeovers are part of the 2025 Plan.

9. Demonize, deport enemies.

NAZI-HITLER: Demonize enemies such that they are deported to camps, their businesses and property seized by the Nazis and citizens.

MAGA-TRUMP: Demonize enemies such that they are deported to camps along the border and elsewhere.

-- This is part of 2025 plan.

10. Begin widespread violence, mass death.

NAZI-HITLER: Begin the Final Solution, administered by the good and patriotic Germans. Six million Jews are murdered. Unknown quantities of secondary enemies are executed, worked to death.

MAGA-TRUMP: Mass shootings galore, guns celebrated, politicians posing with weapons of mass death.

-- What violence will follow the deportations, we do not know yet.

11. Invade nations, start war.

NAZIS-HITLER: Invade Europe, Russia. Start WW2. 50-60 million die. Europe lay in ruins.

MAGA-TRUMP: Invade, war?

-- Would we be surprised if MAGA-Trump invaded northern Mexico “to stop the the flow drugs and immigrants” ?

-- Or started shipping weapons to Russia so they can invade more of liberal, secular decadent Europe?

-- If war breaks out in Europe, how can a fascist America even be the “good guys”?

12: High Noon for Worldwide Destruction and Catastrophe?

TLDR: The NAZI-MAGA parallels are real. If Trump-MAGA get in power, the Nazi parallels will become self-evident.

As Orwell said. "He who controls history … also controls the future.”

Dang, I left out other NAZI-MAGA parallels:

— Hitler and Trump were first elected without majority votes.

— NAZI and MAGA faced weak opposition parties who failed to see the dire threat posed by Hitler/Trump, their ideologies, and fanatical followers. Until it was too late.

— NAZI and MAGA implore women to have more babies for the "greatness of the nation."

— There was a rapid expansion of both arts and sciences, which NAZI and MAGA both despise and denounce.

— Hitler and Trump had true-believe artists depicting them as masculine, manly men, badass warriors to lead the violent cultural purge.

I am sure there are more.

The parallels are obvious.  What's more interesting to me are the differences.  Hitler seized power during an economic spiral downwards.  And it was real.  Trump is trying to falsify one because he wants to harness the fear that brings.  And it's kinda working, but not really.  But kind of.  The evacuation (be it deportation or camps) of undesired demographic groups is real, but Hitler wants to expand it beyond the Fatherland's borders.  Trump wants to do it from within.
And therein lies the rub.  Trump's base craves insulation and nationalism, doesn't want any more foreign conquests.  Hitler's base knew he had a broader vision for Europe, and they loved it.  Take back all the previous German empires sphere of influence and eradicate anyone inside of the new lands that was not fit for the Reich.  Plus, as evil as he was, Hitler was a cunning and intelligent.  Trump couldn't cognitively test himself out of a wet, paper bag.

Both were stubborn enough so as not to admit defeat.  But in the end, Hitler finally got wise, passed on a directive to Donitz and then took his own life.  Trump won't do that.  He'll die lying until the end, because to pass along his legacy to Eric Trump is to pass it along to a toddler.  Hitler was driven by frustration and low self-esteem and hatred his whole adult life.  And finally seized power and only then, in the waining years of WW2 was he so self-absorbed and insulated, that he truly became dangerous.  Trump has been led his whole life, since birth, with the notion that he was special and anointed.  He never had to scrape for anything.  That is what makes him even more dangerous.  Hitler knew what it was like to be a cornered rat and acted as expected.  Trump won't know the corner when he sees it, and will act even more irrationally than the last 9 years put together.

As a demonstration of loyalty, prominent Nazis turned in Jewish family members (usually by marriage), gays, intellectuals, et. al. to the Reich early on.  It set a precedent that, "If these loyal National Socialists of great import will serve the Reich by ridding our undesired citizenry just within our borders, then the rest of Germany and it's protectorates must do the same as a demonstration of dedication."  If you are a Muslim, LGBTQ, Chinese immigrant, Latin American immigrant, Black, or a woman.  And you vote for Trump or even don't vote at all, don't come crying when you're turned in for re-education, prosecution, hate crimes, lack of health care, or fighting against discrimination.  I won't shed a single tear for you.  In fact, I'll root for your demise.  Hitler wanted to liquidate the minorities of Europe.  I don't mind if we liquidate the stupids of America.  I'd prefer to do this peacefully and re-elect Joe Biden, but if you're in a group that isn't a white male Christian going for Trump, I'll be happy to wave to you from the ramp.

I got to this point earlier this year after an idea stewed in my mind for a couple of years.

I got a product designer to design it and a manufacturer to make a prototype. The prototype looks good and operates well. The manufacturer is making 100 units for me to test the market.

Investors welcome. Project is far enough along that an NDA is in order.

The ‘realest’ parallel between Nazi and maga is Maga’s infiltrating low level grass roots local governments like school boards, city councils, election boards, and even county appraisal district newly formed elected board positions.

The differences are more important.  The 1920s and 1930s saw a lot of Germans down on their luck and with no outlet for them to speak their minds outside of demonstrations, no steady food source, and few distractions to keep their minds occupied after the WWI losses, and the Treaty of Versailles hurting them economically. In other words, some serious hardships arose for a lot of Germans,

2020s MAGA doesn’t have the kinds of actual feel it in your starving stomach or empty bank account grievances the Germans had, has food security, has an outlet (social media) to blow off steam to keep them from rioting through the streets (not that they have reasons to riot other than losing) , and has distractions (internet, social media, Fox News).

That’s why even if 75 million people voted for Trump, only a few thousand were there on January 6th. That’s why Trump’s rallies have been going down hill and attendances is in the hundreds or thousands. MAGA talks a lot of shit, but at the end of the day, most are too comfortable in their double-wides, with their big-screen TVs and duallies they are forever making payments on to do anything that risks their wellbeing,  in the 1920s you had a lot of Germans who had nothing to lose at all.

When someone takes the stance that news is fake, it's not worth even attempting to talk to them. It's impossible to reason with them, and the only option remaining is to make fun of them.

Part of the allure for conspiracy nuts is that they think they have inside knowledge the rest of the world doesn’t.  They feel like they are in a movie, in on the big secret.

Laughing at them, well a lot of them will still feel like we don’t actually know because we are blue or red pilled or whatever the fuck it is.  BUT! There will be plenty who dont like to be mocked because it makes them wonder if they are the ones who aren’t in on the secret.

Well put, and as usual, put more succinctly than Lobo.  I've dealt with a lot of powerful people in my lifetime, but the guy I fear the most is the guy with nothing to lose.

-Trump has no expressed plan to move beyond our borders.  Hitler literally wrote a book about it since the first two Reichs had been compressed beyond all recognition.

-Complacency is almost as powerful a drug as being validated politically, in the case of the bottom tier of MAGA nation.

-Then there is the obfuscation of Civil War.  Germans had some internal populations they didn't want there anymore.  But more than that, they wanted back everything from the Rhine to Prussia, North Africa to Moscow.  Trump doesn't even know what he wants, he just wants more adulation.  MAGA nation keeps claiming there'll be violence, but they've yet to clarify who and where?  Do you attack police, brown people who may have voted for Trump, women who may have voted for Trump, the military, civil servants, left-handed people, who?  And where does this all play out?  Which battlefields?  Which lines of demarcation?  What is the theater of this Civil War?  What borders are you wanting to conquer?  You want to 'conquer' a swing state like Pennsylvania that broke for Biden?  Good luck taking Philly or Pittsburgh.  There's no plan, just angry rhetoric.  Say what you want about Lee, he had a geographic theater of war plan that actually worked for a short while.  Say what you want about Hitler, he had a multi-continental plan that actually worked for awhile.  MAGA is just "we gotta buncha guns and we ain't gonna take no more shit.  This is our country."  And then they nod off to reality TV after a bucket of chicken.

The 3rd Reich actually worked from 1933-1943 in terms of its implementation of evil, because smart people got organized and decided they had nothing to lose and everything to gain.  A second MAGA reich won't work because it's even more corrupt than the Nazis, it's less organized, and they suffer from complacency.

And we are so fucking lucky that Hitler was just 44 when he gained complete control and in good shape.  Trump is 78 and getting worse by the day.  Bad news-when Hitler died and shortly thereafter Donitz gave unconditional surrender, the Germans stood down almost immediately.  Turned in their weapons and armories, ships to port, fixed wing groups grounded forever.  They learned of their atrocities and set to rectify their sins and rebuild their country and much of Europe.  There were no statues erected, no flags of Hitler hoisted in protest to Allied occupation, the Marshall plan was carried out to the letter by those people, they accepted their inner ugliness and the punishment that came along with their complicity.  To this day, there are no statues, no monuments to their insane leaders.  Every German student, from a young age, is taught about WW2 and the Holocaust.  and nobody complains, "I don't want those books in my child's class...he might feel bad about his heritage."  They don't shy away from it like we do.

When Trump goes, and he will soon.  It won't be like May 1945 Germany.  they won't take it well at all.  They'll act out insanely.  But they won't know who to take it out on.  that's the real danger.  25mm stupid people, armed to the teeth, with nothing to lose, and no Marshall to guide them.

What does matter are the endless cultural fears and grievances … the heavily Christian followers, the racism, the belief "my country is being taken by immigrants,” the belief "woke is grooming my kids.”….  It’s the idiot world culture (Q, conspiracy, astrology, pseudoscience, etc.), the combo of ignorance and arrogance. … It’s the belief in a Great Leader, the belief that God has their back in a Great Destiny of Christian Cultural Purity.

None of this has to do with economic hardship. We’re not in a Great Depression and yet fascism is on the march and seizing power, in Texas and across America.

The scenario is pretty clear.   Follow A Handmaid's tale.  The plan actually gets out in front of the leaders, and becomes bigger than even their vision, and then they can't stop it.

What does it look like?  Imagine Texas run by Ken Paxton with unlimited and unchecked authority (by the way, you don't need to merely "imagine" that for much longer.  The Gov and Lt. Gov bend the knee to him, and all of our courts are afraid of him and will do whatever he demands, lest he loose his MAGA minions on them and primary them out of office).  Your blue city/neighborhood feels otherwise?  Tough fucking shit.  The AG's shock troops (have you, ummm, noticed the massive militarization of the DPS?) will show up, occupy the fuck out of you, and impose what looks exactly like martial law.  Spot checks of your daughter leaving the neighborhood, to make sure she's not pregnant and maybe going to get an abortion somewhere?  Yep.  All of the shit.

Your choices will either flee, submit, or fight.  That's what your civil war looks like.  Texas, punished and purged.  They're running the play right now.  Not later.  NOW.

Nope. Like all fascists, totalitarians, and Christian warriors, MAGA will totally celebrate a foreign conquest and military victory. After all, the Nazis were “nationalists" …. until they weren’t … and invaded Europe.

For MAGA: Let’s say, for example, taking on the cartels south of the border … and, just to be sure … take all of Mexico to completely stop the flow of drugs and immigrants. What better way to secure our border. Mexico would quickly surrender/collapse in the face of Pentagon power. MAGA and the Christians-Catholics could establish a proxy government in Mexico City, but run from the US.

MAGA would have parades far and wide. Church bells ringing across America. The media would largely celebrate it, too. It would be like when Reagan invaded Grenada (1980s) and the GOP went bananas with love and adoration. Only exponentially more with Trump in the White House.

Disagree. Much of the world and the American elite did nothing during his rise to power, despite detailed knowledge of the relatively minor atrocities committed prior to the real ramp up of extermination when the empire was shrinking.

Had Germany committed to a limited war with takeover of Germanic or partially Germanic territory and even a few that were not like France and the Nordic  countries, then I think US involvement would have been limited. I say that with the caveat that Japan also affected the decision.

This list of American titans of business that all but aided the Nazi cause is long, deep, well funded, and very washed over by history.

Germany had a very stout army and could have very well succeeded in a limited takeover of Europe had they not been bat shit crazy.

There are numerous scenarios where an invasion of Europe by the US could have been difficult and unsuccessful. To say nothing of a measured approach by Germany leading to their development of atomic weapons without interference from multifront wars.

The world was truly fortunate. Germany had it there for the taking and just fucked up. History really did stand on the edge of a knife.

Fair points.  But another 'difference' that is more disturbing to me than the similarities is, Hitler installed those general and flag officers.  He built that fascist bureaucracy and Wermacht, almost from scratch.  They owed their power, their vocation, even their lives---to Hitler.  Trump has shit on the military at every turn.  Obviously he still has plenty of followers among the NCO's and enlisted, but as Adm. McRaven warns---the officers of the Wermacht owed everything they had to Hitler, Trump merely inherited the Pentagon.  They don't owe him anything.  Even with their fealty to Hitler, some of them tried a number of times to kill him.  Trump turns the military towards the people or a foreign power without provocation, it will make General Beck look like a toddler.

there are plenty of serviceman who are chomping to invade something, anything for Trump.  But unlike Hitler's senior officers, those of the U.S. Armed Forces were here before Trump and they will think of what it should be like after Trump.  We sleep under that safe mindset, not that of a deranged tangerine.

Those people sound like really shitty Christians.

Wait, am I allowed to say that here or will Biden lose more votes?

The differences are more important.  The 1920s and 1930s saw a lot of Germans down on their luck and with no outlet for them to speak their minds outside of demonstrations, no steady food source, and few distractions to keep their minds occupied after the WWI losses, and the Treaty of Versailles hurting them economically. In other words, some serious hardships arose for a lot of Germans,

I’ve seen an argument made that Roosevelt’s trade policy with respect to Japan was a deliberate attempt to bait Japan into attacking us so that we could get into the war with Germany.

IDK how you did it, but this makes me at least tiny inclining more sympathetic to Nazi sympathizers. [Hear me out!]

A least they had some sort of an excuse? I mean a pretty prosperous / industrious / militaristic society was completely in the shitter.

MAGA doesn’t have anything other than the idiot box feeding them lies, their own personal squandered life head start, and their laziness in not fact checking anything they hear with reality.

They haven’t yet approached the level of depravity as the Nazis (thank god), but one had to think it’s only because they’re so dumb and not for a lack of motive.

I’ve seen an argument made that Roosevelt’s trade policy with respect to Japan was a deliberate attempt to bait Japan into attacking us so that we could get into the war with Germany.
He also sent cruisers to the Pacific to keep an eye on Japan when tensions were high and there was a great likelihood of Japan sinking the odd cruiser.  In America’s “Remember the Maine!” tradition, the sinking of one of his pop-up cruisers would cause the death of approximately the same amount of military personnel as we lost at Pearl Harbor.   He was more than willing to risk that, and some would say he would not be entirely displeased if Japan had sunk one of the cruisers - because that would be the alternate path to war in the Pacific - and therefore war in Europe - had Pearl Harbor never happened.
I truly do believe in the adage that never attribute malice to what can be explained by simple incompetence, so I fall on the side of the fence that thinks Pearl Harbor was not known in advance… But I would not bet my life on it.

I think this is a real possibility.

Let’s say there are strikes on cartels. It’s possible the cartels begin a terror campaign in the US. A possible response is a full scale invasion into Mexico.

The war plays right into Trump’s narrative. The southern border is war zone.

Yes.  There is no way we were letting Hitler take over England.  As long as England was still in the fight they weren't going to let Hitler just chill out on the Champs-Élysées sipping on Bordeaux and munching on croissants.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. Your scenario is spot on. I was not aware of any of those plans for attacking cartels or Mexico.

My suggestion of MAGA attacking Mexico just seemed like a logical deduction from Trump-MAGA racism and propaganda.

There’s a lot of Surly posters and Americans who are in utter denial about how violent and bloody this country will be under a Trump-2025 Plan regime.

It boggles my mind that so many Surly posters and the mainstream media cannot see the 100% obvious parallels between the Nazis and MAGA. I know few will read this, but here are the parallels.

And do I remember correctly that Hitler had a secretary named Trump, and Trump's secretary's middle name is Hitler?

With all due respect, you are incorrect. Atom, you’re a good poster. But, you and many other Surly posters — I guess from mostly McCombs and the corporate/capitalist world — need to realize humans are not 100% economic minded. Far from it.

What do Harlan Crow and West Texas billionaires have in common with MAGA fanatics living in trailer parks? It’s not fucking loads of money or fear of hunger.

— It’s a hard-core belief in God and Christianity, racism, and fear of leftist wokeism. That’s their great fear … not finding a loaf of bread in the Great Depression.

— That’s why cultural similarities are far more important, as mentioned in my original post. It does not matter that Germans had economic hardship and MAGA doesn’t much of any.

That’s why, with no economic hardship, MAGA is still fucking seizing power across America. They are establishing a fascist theocracy, gutting schools, banning books, and targeting pregnant women, LGBTQIA, immigrants and promising deportations. … They are celebrating and posing with automatic weapons, attacking all kinds of established sciences, putting 10 Commandments in classes, openly telling everyone they will establish a CHRISTIAN DICTATORSHIP in Project 2025.

None of this has to do with economic hardship. We’re not in a Great Depression and yet fascism is on the march and seizing power, in Texas and across America.

Look beyond economics. It’s the cultural environments all around us, right before our eyes.

Plainly stated, they’re hard core Trumpists because he hates the same people they hate and they find great solace in that.

Besides just being an overall ugly message, I never get the whole, “America. Love it or leave it” attitude. It also makes zero sense even when considering their “make America great again” motto. Because apparently they don’t love American today so why aren’t they leaving?

in reality, we know what they mean which is that we should accept their view of America or leave.

“Straight White men built the roads we drive on, the buildings where we live, and the ones that fought and declared independence from the tyranny of the British for us to have freedom and the pursuit of happiness,” Gomez said. “To anyone that does not like America, GTFO [get the f*** out].”

It's funny that she should say this, since the road in front of my house was redone over the last couple of months and all I saw was Hispanics doing almost 100% of the manual labor and women holding the go/stop flags at the end of the street on both ends and at least one of the supervisors was African American.  I didn't question them on their sexual orientation.

From Valentina Gomez' website, first line in her bio:

Quote

Valentina is a real estate investor, financier, strategist, former NCAA Division I swimmer, relentless achiever, and a fierce advocate for the principle values we hold dear as Americans battling for a better future.

I'm sure Tulane is very proud of her achievements.

Oh, she's an immigrant from South America telling Black Americans to GTFO.  Once again, we find irony is dead.

Yeah, that one in particular made me chuckle.  I haven't seen a road or construction crew in Texas in my entire life that was predominantly or even largely made up of "white men."  When I was a kid in SETX....outdoor hard working crews (construction, roofers, etc.) were mostly.....black.   Over the past few decades, that shifted to mostly (if not entirely) hispanic.  Fucking fantastic.

And the icing on the cake?  As she eagerly plays the "straight white men are the only people who matter!" card....she has zero fucking awareness that when the purge comes, her spic ass is being shoved in a train car to be deported with the rest of us.  Leopards, faces, etc.
