i used to work with a husband and wife- one was a coach, one was an athletic trainer. they had two kids together, and the kids loved their maternal grandparents dearly. that is, until their maternal grandparents, who only consumed fox news, believed donald trump when he said that the corona virus would come and go, and that they didn’t need to wear masks like some kind of pussies. neat advice, except that both grandparents died from covid early in the pandemic. my former coworker lost her parents, and her kids lost their favorite people. guess who she and her husband voted for this year?

Our new VP-elect is approvingly quoting well known fictional sociopaths, so things are really accelerating quicker than I thought, I imagined we might get to Inauguration Day before the admin started openly channeling Cormac McCarthy’s personifications of nihilistic violence and hostility.

Where are all of these supposed thought leaders who gave Trump virtually no chance leading up to the election? Talk about tilting at windmills.

It looks like Johnny, Pronghorn, and a few of our other posters had a fun weekend in Columbus. @WhatTheBuck, I hope they had the courtesy of giving you a ring while they were in town.

Shouting Racial Slurs, Neo-Nazi Marchers Shock Ohio’s Capital
The group’s actions in Columbus on Saturday, part of a recent pattern of white supremacist incidents in the country, were condemned by officials around the state.

Officials in Columbus, Ohio, and across the state condemned a small group of people who marched through part of the city on Saturday carrying Nazi flags and shouting racial slurs and expressions of white power.

The marchers appeared to number only about a dozen people, but the invectives they shouted through a bullhorn at anyone they passed and the large swastika symbols they bore seemed to achieve their goal of rattling not just Columbus but a wider audience online.

Videos of the neo-Nazi marchers in the Short North neighborhood, a part of the city containing many restaurants and newly built apartments, quickly spread on social media, prompting swift denouncements by state and city officials.

“Neo-Nazis — their faces hidden behind red masks — roamed streets in Columbus today, carrying Nazi flags and spewing vile and racist speech against people of color and Jews,” Gov. Mike DeWine, Republican of Ohio, said in a statement on X. “There is no place in this state for hate, bigotry, antisemitism or violence, and we must denounce it wherever we see it.”

The Anti-Defamation League said that the Columbus event fit a recent pattern of white supremacist incidents, hundreds of which have taken place across the country over the past 18 months.

The marches tend to be small, unannounced to avoid counterprotesters and tailor-made for social media, said Oren Segal, vice president for the Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism.

“At the end of day, they want to create fear and anxiety in communities and get a photo op,” Mr. Segal said in an interview on Sunday.

Mr. Segal, whose staff monitors white supremacy activity nationwide, said that a newly formed supremacist group called Hate Club, based in St. Louis, had taken credit for the march on Saturday in Columbus, and that the protest might have been inspired in part by a rivalry with a hate group based in Ohio.

Mr. Segal said that “flash” events like the one in Columbus tended to involve blatant symbols of hate like the flags with swastikas that the men carried. They are intended for maximum shock value among the general public, he said, but also used to gain credibility among other white supremacist groups.

No arrests were made in connection with the Columbus demonstration, according to local news reports.

The Columbus Dispatch, quoting a statement from the Columbus police, said officers had investigated reports that the marchers had been involved in a physical altercation. The police briefly detained the marchers but determined no assaults had taken place, and they were released, according to the statement. A police spokesman could not be reached on Sunday.

Shannon Hardin, president of the Columbus City Council, said on X, “This community rejects their pathetic efforts to promote fear and hate.” He tied the incident to Donald J. Trump’s election. “I am sorry that the president-elect has emboldened these creeps,” Mr. Hardin, a Democrat, said in a post. His office did not return requests for comment on Sunday.

Mr. Trump has for years used language that critics say fuels white supremacist groups. He has consistently offered only a mild rebuke to the racial violence that occurred at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017, and he has praised the Jan. 6 rioters, many of whom were members of far-right groups.

This year, John Kelly, his former chief of staff, said Mr. Trump had told him that “Hitler did some good things.” In May, Mr. Trump briefly posted a video on Truth Social featuring an image that referred to “the creation of a unified Reich” before taking it down.

Mr. Trump has continually disavowed any association to such groups. “President Trump is backed by Latinos, Black voters, union workers, angel moms, law enforcement officers, border patrol agents and Americans of all faiths,” Karoline Leavitt, Mr. Trump’s campaign spokeswoman and the incoming White House press secretary, has said. “President Trump will be a president for all Americans.”

The Columbus incident followed a Nazi demonstration in Michigan this month.

On Nov. 9, Nazi demonstrators stood outside an American Legion Post in Howell, Mich., where a community theater group was performing a production of “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

Howell, a city between Lansing and Detroit, has had a history of white supremacy and racism. In the 1970s, a grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan would host rallies for fellow Klansmen at his farm just outside the city limits.

In July, a group of white supremacists marched through town, shouting “We love Hitler” and “We love Trump.”

The next month, Mr. Trump held a campaign event in Howell alongside the county sheriff, and Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign criticized him for choosing the location, given the area’s history. But Mr. Trump pointed out that President Biden had visited Howell in 2021.

During the first act of the Anne Frank production, the theater staff became aware of the Nazi demonstrators, according to an account of the incident on the Fowlerville Community Theater’s Facebook page.

Although some cast members were shaken, they pulled together and finished the performance.

“This production centers on real people who lost their lives in the Holocaust,” the group said, adding: “On Saturday evening, things became even more real than we expected. The presence of protesters outside gave us a small glimpse of the fear and uncertainty felt by those in hiding.”

So magma’s on twitter tell folks if they don’t like what twitter has become, then leave.

Mass exodus of normal, sane people (dems) decide to leave creating a magma echo chamber.

magma’s decide to migrate to Bluesky just to have people to argue with and they are getting blocked left and right over there.

So they only want people to stay on twitter so they can argue? You won, why are you getting angry that people don’t want to engage with you?

Don't know where to put this, but I had a female friend act absolutely incredulous this weekend that I don't mind that my daughter listens to Taylor Swift, and I think she's a good role model for girls to look up to. Something about how slutty she's gotten and all the plastic surgery she's hiding. Her 7 year old son even chimed in with a "I hate Taylor Swift!"

I guaran-fucking-tee you that she didn't have a strong opinion about Taylor Swift two months ago.

Look, vote for him. I get it. I don't care. But I will never understand the need to believe and defend every single word out of his stupid fucking mouth.

It pisses me off that the concept of "patriotism" has been coopted by magats.  They only want to embrace the pre-civll war era ideal of America, not the reality of today's multi-cultural America.

You are right to be pissed off. These are people who hate the stated values, and aspirations, of our country. Their movement’s thinkers and big money donors recognized some time ago that, long term, they would lose the battle of ideas that would guide this country’s future; today, they are open about their disdain for our Constitution. They plan on authoritarian rule, and will call it a monarchy. They use patriotism like the Trojans used a huge wooden horse.

Yea, they are following history’s fascism rule book. And, yes, they have been unbelievably successful. It’s going to get exponentially worse, but it ain’t over.

Hurray for a politicized and partisan military!

So, apparently, Trump intends to create something called a "warrior board" to weed out generals/admirals from the military. This board will be comprised of former generals to do the dirty work and perhaps give himself a little political cover/plausible deniability.

The new admin says they want to go after "woke" generals and anyone who was involved in Afghanistan, but you can of course bet they're looking to take out anyone who isn't loyal to Trump. For those naive enough to believe that the military will save us, keep looking for other heroes. We knew he was going to purge the military, but now we know what that looks like.

Odds that Flynn is named the chair of this "warrior board?"

SIAP. I don't recall seeing this last week.

WASHINGTON—The Trump transition team is considering a draft executive order that establishes a “warrior board” of retired senior military personnel with the power to review three- and four-star officers and to recommend removals of any deemed unfit for leadership.

If Donald Trump approves the order, it could fast-track the removal of generals and admirals found to be “lacking in requisite leadership qualities,” according to a draft of the order reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. But it could also create a chilling effect on top military officers, given the president-elect’s past vow to fire “woke generals,” referring to officers seen as promoting diversity in the ranks at the expense of military readiness.

As commander in chief, Trump can fire any officer at will, but an outside board whose members he appoints would bypass the Pentagon’s regular promotion system, signaling across the military that he intends to purge a number of generals and admirals.

The draft order says it aims to establish a review that focuses “on leadership capability, strategic readiness, and commitment to military excellence.” The draft doesn’t specify what officers need to do or present to show if they meet those standards. The draft order originated with one of several outside policy groups collaborating with the transition team, and is one of numerous executive orders under review by Trump’s team, a transition official said.

The warrior board would be made up of retired generals and noncommissioned officers, who would send their recommendations to the president. Those identified for removal would be retired at their current rank within 30 days.

Karoline Leavitt, the Trump-Vance Transition spokeswoman, declined to comment on this draft executive order, but said “the American people re-elected President Trump by a resounding margin giving him a mandate to implement the promises he made on the campaign trail. He will deliver.”

The establishment of the board would be in line with Trump’s calls for purging what he views as failed generals, including those involved in the chaotic 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan, according to people familiar with the policy discussions. Trump has said he would ask all generals involved in the withdrawal to resign by “noon on Inauguration Day.”

The president-elect previewed the move during a campaign event in October, telling an audience that he would create a task force to monitor the “woke generals” and get rid of diversity training in the military.

“They’re gone,” Trump said of those generals, without naming specific officers.

One feared potential target of Trump’s threatened purge could be Air Force Gen. CQ Brown Jr., the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, according to two defense officials. During the 2020 George Floyd protests, Brown spoke about the impact that movement had on him and what it was like to rise through the military ranks as a Black fighter pilot.

The executive order, which has been reviewed by the president-elect’s transition team, may be presented to Trump when he takes office, and its implementation depends on whether he chooses to sign it in its current form, according to a person familiar with its drafting.

On Tuesday, Trump announced his intention to nominate Pete Hegseth, a veteran and Fox News host, to be his next Secretary of Defense. If confirmed by the Senate, Hegseth could be key in implementing the findings of the Warrior Board’s review.

The Trump team wants to do major reforms at the Defense Department, particularly around the size of the joint staff, according to a person with knowledge of the transition.

“It’s gotten way too big,” this person said. “Trump also expects that many of the generals, the three- and four-star generals that have been underperforming will basically be retired.”

The draft executive order cites as precedent for the move Gen. George C. Marshall’s creation of a “plucking board” in 1940, led by retired general officers, to review the files of senior serving military officers and “remove from line promotion any officer for reasons deemed good and sufficient.” The goal of Marshall’s board was to make room to promote promising junior officers.

But some former officials believe the incoming Trump administration is looking to politicize the military.

“Do they start wearing MAGA hats in formation to signal who’s where?” asked one former senior Pentagon official. “The potential for this to go wrong is infinite.”

The president has the power to fire generals but rarely does so for political reasons. President Harry Truman fired Army Gen. Douglas MacArthur for publicly challenging the administration’s Asia security strategy. President Barack Obama fired Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal as his Afghanistan commander after the military leader’s subordinates were quoted as criticizing the administration in a magazine article.

U.S. troops take an oath of office to the Constitution and vow to not follow any illegal order, and Congress must approve the promotion of general officers.

But establishing a board separate from the current process, which uses serving officers, could undermine the idea that generals refrain from sharing their political views within the Pentagon. It could also potentially prompt officers not to speak out against orders they believe are illegal, says Eric Carpenter, professor of military law at Florida International University College of Law.

“This looks like an administration getting ready to purge anyone who will not be a yes man,” said Carpenter, a former Army lawyer. “If you are looking to fire officers who might say no because of the law or their ethics, you set up a system with completely arbitrary standards, so you can fire anyone you want.”

In the early days of his presidency, Trump openly expressed admiration for military generals and promoted a number of them to his administration. Ret. Marine Gen. Jim Mattis served as his first defense secretary. Ret. Marine Gen. John Kelly was his chief of staff and Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster served as national security adviser.
But relations between Trump and the generals quickly soured. By the end of his term, all three of those officers publicly criticized him and described him as a threat to national security.

The president-elect also had a particularly fraught relationship with Ret. Army Gen. Mark Milley, whom Trump nominated to serve as his chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the final two years of his first administration. Milley told journalist Bob Woodward in his latest book that Trump is “a total fascist.”
Trump has called Milley a “loser.”
