Half measures don’t work. The republicans thought they could just ride it out. They should have stamped it out when they had the chance. The house gave them that opportunity. They are about to reap the whirlwind for that colossal mistake.

I say this about aggy every year.  Every year I'm wrong.

Hawley and Rubio are gunning for that "cleaned-up version of trump" lane (trumpism with a professional demeanor). Hawley has the momentum there for the moment. It appears Rubio is gunning for 2024 and may choose that same lane.

Hawley may be unbeatable, if the never-trumpers head back to the Republican Party. He is in that Pete Buttigieg mold of efficient and effective governance, which makes his present as normal. Rubio wants that energy for himself.

TLDR: Rubio and Hawley are competing for the same lane in 2024.

Thanks for the link.

In a lot of ways it really makes no sense that the Republicans are the party of protecting the wealthy at all costs while the Democrats are the party pushing socialism.

It makes perfect sense when you realize that wealthy Rs use the rubes to keep themselves wealthy, while Ds try to help everyone progress forward as a cohesive society.

The democrats protect the wealthy more than push socialism.

ETA: the more socialist faction of the Democratic Party has little to no power.

Overall I agree with what you’re saying.

They’re competing for the same lane— but there’s no such thing as Trumpism without Trump. Trumpism, if it’s anything, is a congealed mass of grievances expressed as semi-coherent broadsides against the libs, the media, bad immigrants, RINOs and anyone else that is Not Trump.

This incoherence is key to his success. His most loyal supporters are also driven by grievance and anger. It’s directed against everyone and no one. It’s directed at the people who are doing Very Bad Things and who are making life Totally Unfair.  And Donald Trump is the one who shares in being upset at the Seriously Bad People and will demand that Something be done.  The “what” is tangential, if it was actually expressed then there would be something to disagree with and debate and the whole gimmick falls apart.

Hawley and Rubio can’t recreate that, perversely their ability to articulate what should be done and what they plan to do will actually hurt them.

Your analysis is sound.

But Hawley fighting for $2K for Americans. That is where he and Rubio split, imho.

IMO, Hawley is not fighting for $2K for Americans, he's fighting for those Georgia seats - he's in a much better position if the Senate stays R.

Let's say Mitch fucks this up, the $2,000 isn't voted upon, Bernie ties up Perdue/Loeffler with the NDAA stuff and they don't campaign, people in Georgia are pissed for various reasons.  Meanwhile Trump is raging on twitter against Mitch and the GOP for not doing what he said - as discussed in the stimulus thread - Trump could take in tens of millions in donations if a chunk of his followers give him even just $10 out of their $2,000, but they'll give more of their $2,000 because they are grateful he fought for more money for them.  He could easily rake in $100 million in donations if just 10 million of his supporters tossed $10 his way.

Result: Georgia Senate seats flip.

Are Republicans in the Senate going to line up to take a shot at replacing Mitch?  They'll have Trump's blessing, and they'll have watched the Senate flip back to the Dems under Mitch's watch, again.  While Hawley seems like he's got his eyes on the WH, he could just as easily make a play for Mitch's throne.

2024 is going to be a blood bath on the GOP side.

Pompeo, Cruz, Hawley, Cotton, Nikki Haley, they all want the throne.

Pompeo - Asshole. No charisma. A total dick. Women won’t like him. Big ole pile of trump stink. Lots of bad press going to bubble up to surface from time w/ Trump IMO. Trumpers like him, but that’s not enough and a lot of trumpers will be dead by 2024.

Hawley - Got a shot. Young. Smart. A foil for Biden. A foil for Trump (kind of). Never trumpers come home. Trumpers energized by his young bravado.

Cotton - No charisma. No killer instinct. Looks like a pussy. Boring. Trumpers need real men (and don’t know he’s a veteran). Never trumpers will vote for him... but I don’t think he makes them tingle in their dingle.

Nikki - Got a shot.... especially if Biden isn’t nominee and Kamala is. Has Trump stink... but no one will remember / care. Says all the republican classics. Never trumpers come home, but trumpers leave because she’s a minority woman. Possible deep stater... so....????

Yeah, I'm worried about a lot of political things in 2024, but Mike Pompeo ain't one of 'em.  I mean, maybe he'd try to run, but it'll be incredibly short-lived.  I know y'all think Marco Rubio is as dumb as Trump, and I'm not going to defend him in CR.  But I think he's a realistic nominee.  I want Biden to have all the success in the world between now and November 2024.  At which point, I hope I have the luxury of getting to vote Libertarian again.

I need to learn more about Hawley I guess, he seems to be gaining momentum.  I'd like for Ben Sasse to run, he's got ties to UT.  But in the end, the GOP will make another colossal fuckup.

I'm resigned to the fact that though that Trump himself is going to fade into Bolivia.  Jail, death, poor health, marginalization, etc.  But I really do see Don, Jr. or Ivanka putting their hat in there.  Their age and lack of experience would be immediate stoppers but 2024 is the only year in human history where someone named Trump could run again.  By 2028, it's game over for the whole enterprise.  One of them is going to capitalize on the moment.  The only reason Don, Jr. has become such an ardent defender of the man he's hated his whole life ie because he knows he can capitalize on the relationship down the road.  His love of coke is only superseded by his hatred of his father.  It's the ultimate Kritzinger's Dilemma.

Are there valid arguments against this? Seems like a no brainer.
We can call it the Loeffler-Purdue-Burr bill.

Im for it but I guess the question is does it actually solve anything? Or just push it to family members/friends to trade, the inside info will still be used for financial gain.

If nothing else, it's a huge step in the right direction.  People smarter than me can figure out how to stop the other avenues of corruption.

Two defenses usually (and no one has been convicted under the existing STOCK Act):

The speech and debates clause of the Constitution and the materiality element is difficult.

A good prosecutor could get a conviction, but the DOJ prefers cleaner cases.
