A former January 6th defendant wanted by Utah law enforcement officials for alleged kidn*pping and eight counts of aggravated s*xual assa*lt has been taken into custody by a fugitive task force in Cook County, Illinois.

John Emanuel Banuelos, 40, is wanted for the nine first-degree felonies, alleged to have been committed in 2018.

According to a probable cause statement filed in the arrest warrant, issued by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office, the female victim told a Unified Police detective she was approached at a TRAX station by “Jacob,” later to be identified as Banuelos, on June 8, 2018.

Banuelos invited the woman to his house for a party, and when she arrived, “there was no furniture and no party. (She) said Banuelos began touching her legs, and she told him to stop,” the court document says.

The woman told investigators that Banuelos made her smoke something, and afterward, she could not move her body.

The woman said Banuelos left briefly, then returned and s*xually assa*lted her multiple times. She said “Banuelos then grabbed her by the shirt and dropped her on the floor, causing her to hit her head. (She) recalled feeling like Banuelos was going to k*ll her.”

The woman was examined at a hospital the day after the incident, and evidence swabs were taken. On Aug. 5 of this year, CODIS identified Jose Banuelos as a DNA contributor. “Jose” Banuelos is a known alias of John Banuelos, the probable cause statement says.

“The defendant has an extensive violent criminal history in Illinois dating back to 2001,” the Utah warrant says. “The defendant has been arrested at least 20 times for weapons offenses, domestic viol*nce, assault and battery, property damage, resisting arrest, trespassing, obstruction, eluding, and protective order violations.

He also has an unresolved case in Salt Lake County based on a domestic viol*nce assa*lt allegation. Warrants also were issued in those cases, the warrant says.

n 2021, Donald Trump commuted the sentence of

 Jonathan Braun, a Long Island man convicted for his role as a high-ranking member of an international marijuana smuggling ring. Braun was released from federal prison after serving about a year of his 10-year sentence.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the 81-year-old from Grand Forks traveled to Prague in the Czech Republic about 14 times between 2011 and 2021.

During these trips, he paid for s*xual acts with adolescent boys at a brothel and sought out underage boys in a public park near the main train station.

He reportedly used the alias “Sean Evans” on some occasions to avoid having his real name recorded, citing his position as a state legislator.

Court documents detail how he communicated with friends about the trips, encouraging them to join, sharing details like boys “renting” for around $60 (with s*x extra), and boasting about encounters with boys as young as 12 and 15.

He also faced allegations of manipulating a 16-year-old Canadian boy online to send explicit images.

Holmberg pleaded guilty in August 2024 to one count of traveling in foreign commerce for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct.

The sentencing occurred on March 26, 2025, exceeding the guidelines range that both sides had recommended (around 3-4 years), with the judge citing the severity of the offenses and ongoing risk.

This case was handled under Project Safe Childhood, the DOJ’s initiative against child exploitation.
