The movie you just watched

Just watched The Last Movie Star with Burt Reynolds and Ariel Winter. Surprisingly good movie. Burt delivers a great performance as the cranky, old, washed up movie star suckered into accepting an award from a rinky dink film festival in Nashville. Ariel Winter is his emotionally troubled assistant for the weekend and isn't bad on the eyes. She's not quite Vic material, but is pudgy hot with most of her ass hanging out of a pair of really short shorts and a delicious set of tits.

My 77 yo mom is in town, and we celebrated her birthday by taking her to her favorite restaurant (Golden Corral - no, I'm not joking), a movie (Book Club), and watched the Congress Bridge bats.

Book Club sucks, but she enjoyed it. It's about 4 grandmothers (Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, etc.) reading 50 Shades of Gray for their book club and then getting horny and testing the dating waters again. All ends well for horny grandmas as they land their beaux. Awkward af.

Kill me...

Batman vs Superman on TNT.  Never saw it in the theaters because the previews/trailers looked corny.  I was right.  Pretty much sucked.  Wonder Woman kicked butt though.

I haven't been happy with any of the Superman movies.  Most of the Batman flicks in their various incarnations have been pretty good (IMHO).

Was on a long haul flight and watched Geostorm, probably the worst movie ever made.

Ho. Lee. Shit.

I was on a short trip on a plane and turned it on. What a terrible movie. I didn’t even get 30 minutes in and was wondering who wrote that flaming turd. Just terrible.

The Witch - The writer/director did a good job of building an interesting world but I didn't find it scary or creepy in the least.  It was OK, but it's definitely a victim of the phenomenon where every horror movie that isn't some over the top goreporn fest like Hostel must now be labeled "A MODERN HORROR CLASSIC!!" or something equally high-minded.

I'm not a horror guy but man I loved the Witch.  Not scary, but creepy as hell vibe.  What the New World must have felt like every evening.

I liked it, but it its rewatchability isn't very good.  And it needed more lighting when all those soul-stealing hot witches were naked at the end.

The Witch is more of a psychological marathon than a horror movie. It took me to the breaking point where I was kind of hoping the movie would have ended five minutes before it did. Really well done. Cinematography and set design are A+ too. Can’t wait to watch it again. Sort of.

I re-watched Conan the Barbarian last night with my 14 year-old son. I haven't seen it in a few years, but still have most of the dialogue from the theatrical release memorized, (but we were watching the director's cut). My son had never seen it. It has the most extensive nudity of any movie we've watched together, but the sex scenes are, for the most part, far tamer than what he's seen on Stargate SGU or House, MD. The soundtrack is still great, even enough to offset the weak acting (along with the cinematography). I've spoilered comments about the director's cut.

Since it is the director's cut, the extended dialogue between Conan and Subotai before the final battle detracts from the original theatrical release. I see why it was cut. On the flipside, adding the princess to the final scenes at the Mountain of Power ties in very well with Robert Howard's original source material. Sure, Valeria is dead, but Conan walks off into the sunset carrying a younger, hotter woman.

Been flying a lot so have caught up on basically all the new releases American Airlines shows:

Shape of Water - bad

Three Billboards- really good

The Disaster Artist - Hilarious/Awesome

I, Tonya- Hilarious/really good

Lady Bird- Surprisingly enjoyable

Marvel Universe Movies- I probably liked Dr. Strange (2016) and Black Panther more than everyone I know but can see why it kinda sucked, the rest are just comic book entertainment fests.

I have American Made and Dunkirk on the DVR waiting along with Blade Runner 2049, which I did not finish on a flight. Finally saw Darkest Hour and it was fantastic.  That is why I recorded Dunkirk; since it was a part of the Darkest Hour story line.

"I don't feel at home in this world anymore" (Netflix).  A dark comedy about a depressed not-so-young lady who goes vigilante after her house is robbed. Funny characters (Elijah Wood costars) and surprisingly action-packed in the 2nd half. It's not filmed in Austin but it still kinda feels like an Austin movie.  (Actually the producer/director does live here.)

Also, The Disaster Artist.  You probably need to see The Room first to fully appreciate it.

That Thing You Do. I love this movie. My oldest picked it because she’s a Tom Hanks fan. I swear this movie has a gravitational field that’s very strong. I would always stop down and watch it whenever it was on HBO back in the late 90s.

I led you here. For I am Spartacus.
