The movie you just watched

I always go to IMDB when I watch these old movies and its neat to see some of these actors who were born in the 1800s.  Definitely helps to remind me how old these movies really are.

It is a rabbit hole when you start looking at stuff like that. But a lot of fun. I do enjoy looking and seeing movie lists and things like that to see who played in a movie with whom and all that sort of stuff. On John Wayne's movie list it was crazy to see how many movies he made. They were just rapid-fire in the 20s. I don't know how accurate it is but on the Wiki page for him it said that he got his signature walk-swagger by imitating Wyatt Earp, the real Wyatt Earp, whom he actually knew. And he was friends with Tom Mix, who had a very interesting life as well.

To me, that's fascinating.

I’ve had The Jesus Rolls on my DVR forever and for some reason just can’t get around to hitting play. Delete or watch?

I never heard of it. For me, if I don't get to it within two weeks of it on the DVR, it's deleted.

I’ve had some stuff on there for a year that I swear I’m going to get around to, but for some reason I like to keep the DVR memory at around 35% so I’m deleting stuff almost daily.

The Jesus Rolls is a movie by John Turturro based on his Jesus character from The Big Lebowski.

I was on a long plane flight with a good selection of movies. Air France.

The original Breathless. I didn't like it when I saw it decades ago. I prefered the Richard Gere movie which I still love. This go 'round, I appreciated the rawness better than before. Set against the movies of the time, it's quite a standout.

Antman and the Quantiniuum or whatever it's called. What a dog of a movie. It's like they took the worst of the animated movie writers and said they had to fill more than two hours of screentime with gags they'd already used more than twice. Stupid reversal jokes. Idiotic plot. And I am sick of movies relying on family as shorthand for a reason to do something.

Lastly, it was an international flight, so I hopped to another country for a movie I hadn't heard of before. Official Competition with Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas and Oscar Martinez who is evidently a formidable actor from Argentina. A rich Spanish man hires eccentric but successful director Cruz to make a movie about two brothers. She casts actors who are polar opposites. The movie is about their prep for the movie. Quite amusing and very good. Cruz is very good in her role from 2021; I'd think she should have been nominated for something. Banderas and Martinez are also excellent.

I got halfway through Covenant. Not up to Ritchie's standard in my opinion. Perhaps the second half will change my mind.

I've not heard good things about it.

I still have never seen The Big Lebowski so I'll pass on the other one as well.

Some hood selections on my international flight to/from Spain. I saw Aftersun and enjoyed it. Still not sure where the setting was in the flashbacks. I thought I’d read it was turkey but it sure looked like it was all English. After hanging out with some of the English in ibiza and Mallorca they certainly export their culture when abroad. Being a father to a daughter, I could connect to both of the main characters

And saw The Great Beauty again on the way home. I’m getting close to the protagonist’s age and being in Europe seemed to fit.  Couldn’t sleep so watched episodes of A Spy Among Friends. Compelling enough to hold my attention and I like that spy stuff in books and on screens. The three main actors were terrific.

The Split (1968). I’d never even heard of this one. Only rated one and a half stars but it was really a pretty good heist movie for the 60’s with an outstanding cast! Ernest Borgnine, Jim Brown, Donald Sutherland, Jack Klugman, Gene Hackman, Warren Oates, James Whitmore and a ton of others. Can’t believe I’ve missed this one over the years.

Weird trailer.  not real clear what the Rams/Packers game has to do with the movie.  I guess they rob the gate?

80,000 tickets, box office only, $5 ea.

I'll have to give this a second shot. Bailed after first 20 min because I was nodding off. Cast is fantastic.

Yep. It’s pretty much any horse track /casino caper only with a football game. Because of Jim Brown I’m guessing. It’s got some standard 60’s movie issues, but it’s just so great seeing all those guys working together.

Everything Everywhere All At Once.  I give the writers credit for being imaginative or at least for doing a lot of drugs while writing the screenplay.  But after watching the first hour, I wanted to jam knitting needles into my eyes and turned it off.

I didn't want to go all Oedipus, but we also quit about 30 minutes in. I didn't give enough of a shit about anything in the movie including why what was going on was going on to keep watching.

To each his own.

Probably the most satisfied I’ve ever felt after “sticking it out” in a movie.

To each his own for sure.

Watched this randomly on the plane back from Africa. Maybe because I am old and thought too much or maybe the airplane had something in the air I was highly allergic to.
Slow start but damn it made me reflect on life, giving and what I am leaving behind. Really good movie

Had you heard of this before you were on the plane? Because I hadn’t until I saw this trailer.

nope. second leg of a flight and for some reason (part delirium) i saw it and said fuck it lets watch this. . . It has changed how I view life. It moved me and I could not help myself getting chocked up watching it.

Really, what is important when we are gone? what do we leave behind? what matters?

I saw Ikiru (To Live) several years ago and was struck by its redemptive power and its social commentary. My brother recommended Living since it was a remake of ikiru and I intend to see it sometime.

Watched last night with the wife.  Had a cool pre-mad men vibe.  I was underwhelmed with the sentiment though.

Yea, I am sure it will hit people differently. My mood was coming out of a country full of poverty and on the tail end of a long flight. l am going to watch it again with the wife and see if I have the same feels. Did enjoy the first watch.

The Last Rider. Biographical documentary about Lemind with obvious focus on the 89 Tour de France victory. It was well done and I enjoyed it. Unfortunate that Fignon isn’t around to be included.

This is one of my most vivid sports memories. At the time my older brother was competitively racing. I was also into it and had done several citizen races. So my whole family watched it together.
