The movie you just watched

Just watched the OG movie Wallstreet (1987) directed by Oliver Stone. I always knew the “Greed is good” line but that was about it. I think the highlight for me was John C McGinley. That’s about the best thing I can say for a film that aged like warm milk.

Finally got around to showing the 11 y/o the Three Amigos and I swear I've never heard him laugh as much during a movie, maybe in any 100 minute window of his life, than that movie. I've seen it a billion times but to see him watch it for the first time ever was incredible.

He wants to teach the 5 year old the amigo salute.

He wanted to run it back tonight and watch another comedy similar to that, any ideas on what I could introduce him to? We watched Bill and Ted, which he liked but figured there gotta be other options. Mentioned earlier he is a huge horror fan but not sure if there are "age appropriate comedies" for him before I turn him loose on the Porkys, Hardbodies, revenge of the nerds movies.

Flipping around last night, I caught about the last 3/4 ths of Lethal Weapon. Movie holds up well. Danny Glover steals the show. Now I want to rewatch Predator 2.

Lethal Weapon 2 was on after. Doesn't hold up. Couldn't make it through the first chase scene.

Great movie, but subtitled.   See it if you get a chance.  I expect it'll end up on Netflix or some other streaming service.

Emilia Perez. The acting was great, especially Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon, but I didn't love it overall because of the musical thing. I'm not really into musicals in general, but I heard great things about this movie and wanted to check it out. It'll get a lot of awards, but it wasn't for me.

My daughter wanted me to watch it with her because Selena Gomez was in it.  We both enjoy musicals so that wasn’t a problem for us.  I will say that the musical aspects we not your typical movie musical components. The majority of the movie was in Spanish with subtitles which I thought would cause my daughter to lose interest, but it really seemed to help keep her interest.  I’m not sure that I can say that I really enjoyed the move, but more that I found it really fascinating and interesting.  I was very surprised that it held my daughter’s interest for the entire movie and it also sparked some discussion between us.  On the whole, I’m glad we watched it and would recommend it.

Also, Zoe (who also plays the head of the Lioness Program) is very watchable.

Not your typical Selena Gomez vehicle, but I thought she was great in it.

My teenage kids convinced me to go see Smile 2 with them at the theater.  Great flick that is as much psychological thriller and pop culture commentary as it is a horror movie.  Has a telegraphed but still pretty devastating ending.

“Transformers One.” It’s the origin story of the Autobots that’s been missing. The prequel that delivers you from the early friendship between Orion Pax and Megatron to the war between Autobots and Decepticons. Animation was a concern going in, but it is at or near the top of the franchise for me. We left the theater ready for the future stories. If you’re a Transformers geek, you’ll love it.

Fantastic movie.

those last battles was intense.

Le deuxième souffle (Second Wind). Dense movie directed by Melville of a betrayal in a criminal heist. No happy endings for these guys, but the small details make it interesting. The acting was good especially the main character as the mouse and the police inspector as the cat.  Never thought I’d see a movie where pétanque was a key to the story.

Inexplicably Chuck Norris is a huge deal with the middle schoolers in our town. My kid and her lil pals were watching Sidekicks and I told them the only reason this Chuck Norris gem exists was because Mattress Mack had a shit ton of money and decided to see what it was like to make a movie.

watched once upon a time tin hollywood for the first time. tarantino says it’s his best movie; it’s not. of the tarantino movies i’ve seen i’d go:

1a)pulp fiction

1b)inglorious basterds

3)django

4)reservoir dogs

5)jackie brown

6)once upon a time in hollywood

7)the hateful eight

this movie was long, pretty slow, and took like two hours to develop any obvious storyline. it was fine. nothing more.

I'm guessing you are under 50 otherwise you would be lost in the nostalgia Tarantino is slamming hard.

Makes sense. It's really important POV for this film. All the cheap westerns that flooded TV. Helter Skelter. Matt Helm. And about 99.8% of the movie is truth, facts. Pure nostalgia grab. Ya had to be there.

another thing about movies for me that it seems like a lot of movies, especially popular and/or highly acclaimed movies, are made for people who really really really like movies. like so much of the movie is beyond surface level-all of the subtext, and allegory, and references, et al, and all of that stuff just goes over my head.

what i do now is i watch a movie, and when im done i go to youtube and find some videos explaining the movie or expounding on the movie, and im always completely lost at the things that these people see or interpret from these movies. latest example:

100% of that is lost on me. for me i’m just watching a movie and hoping to be entertained.

Saturday Night. Cooper Hoffman is so good. I didn’t realize he was PSH’s son until I saw the credits. He has a bright career ahead of him and his appeal isn’t being just another pretty face who can’t act. Call him a nepo baby but I think he is the real deal.

Cooper is great, as he was in Licorice Pizza. I thought Saturday Night was fine but I will never think of it again.

I watched Conclave and thought it was great. Excellent acting and photography and a good mystery. I’ve always been fascinated by the pope, cardinal, election process of the Catholic Church. It has been shown before in The Shoes of the Fisherman and Angels and Demons. I would also recommend Conclave. We need more movies like that.

Finally got to see Conclave tonight. I loved it, but I also love watching UK shows so this was right in my wheelhouse. Just some great acting with three guys in particular in Fiennes, Tucci and Lithgow that I really enjoy.

I’m not ashamed to admit on a sports message board that wicked was awesome. The family has seen the show three or four times so we’re fans. Thought the movie was a great adaptation. It’s just the first half.

it's so fucking long though I can't see myself blocking out that much time on a football weekend

I just saw it with the wife. Really dragged in the middle. I almost fell asleep. But otherwise I enjoyed. Ariana Grande was amazing. And the visuals were really good.

A Real Pain. Directed by Jesse Eisenberg as well as starring himself and Kieran Culkin. This was a beautiful movie and they got a lot done in 90 minutes. Culkin’s character was poignant and will probably resonate with some folks here. The Concentration Camp scene was great in how it let the horrors there speak for themselves.
