The movie you just watched

Juror #2Ā - Thought this one was really great. Ā A lot of moral dilemma and discussion about how your past can affect how people perceive you for life. Ā It was missing a 5-10 minute scene to explain a pivotal plot shift, I thought, but otherwise liked it. Ā Great performances throughout. Ā Not sure why WB buried a good late career Eastwood movie, but that studio is a mess right now, so who knows.

On Max.

The Brutalist. It is a lot of movie. Love the swingĀ

This is one I want to watch.Ā

Oldestā€™s fiancĆ©e joined the Academy this year (following a successful run through last yearā€™s festivals) so we are going to watch this and a few more tonight while they are visiting for New Yearā€™s. (They give members an App to watch all the potential nominees).Ā

Thatā€™s awesome. Seems obvious, but Iā€™d suggest making your setting as theater-like as possible for this one, particularly with the audio. The score was tremendous.

Double Feature last night:

Carry On: about what I expected and we enjoyed it

Tag: very enjoyableā€¦not sure if it was the movie or me (pizza and wine effect) but it seemed to drift a little in the middleā€¦but ended up being a good random flickĀ

Ā

Ā

An ex-colleague was in the real-life group that Tag was based off from Spokane.Ā  It makes sense if you know him.Ā  Wasn't excited to see him buck naked in the shower in the closing credits getting tagged.Ā  The guy getting tagged at his father's funeral is a true story.Ā

I went back and watched Triple Frontier the other day. Not bad. Came out 5 years ago, so SPOILER ALERT, but you've been warned. I will just say this - recommended with some reservations (described below with spoilers).

Ā

It was a pretty well executed heist film. Some ex-military guys steal a shit ton of money from a drug lord and their escape goes wrong. It actually works well because they didn't have issues (well maybe 1) because they were stupid. Actually they were greedy, which is a normal motivation. In the end one of the guys dies and they escape with a lot less money than they planned or stole (which was more than they planned).

The end felt a lot like Carlito's Way (SPOILER ALERT FOR A 30 YEAR OLD MOVIE), where he almost got out and then was killed by some 2 bit dude that appeared for 10 seconds at the start of the film. In this case Affleck get's got by some kid that he pissed off for obvious reasons, but because he wasn't one of the drug lord's guys it felt not quite right.

Anyway, that's the reservations, entertaining 2 hours, I didn't mind watching it.

Chalamet pulls off the impossible with a more than credible rendition of Dylan. Ā But it's the supporting cast that really make the movie imo. Ā These are the characters who displayed actual depth. Ā Elle Fanning, Ed Norton and the actress who played Joan Baez. Ā All fantastic.

I'd also add Boyd Holbrook as Johnny CashĀ

Watched Conclave and Heretic tonight.

Conclave is really good Oscar bait with amazing acting all around but isnā€™t quite the masterpiece Iā€™ve heard it was. Still a great thriller and worth seeing.

Heretic took a bit to get going but I really enjoyed it overall. If you like religious horror you will love this. Hugh Grant was great.

Watched Heretic tonight. Enjoyed it as well.Ā

A Real Pain is damn good. Culkin is phenomenal and the screenplay is brilliant.Ā

Yeah, this needs more exposure. Having a relative who is so similar to Culkin's character was like an on-screen family reunion for me. You want to tell him to STFU, then beat the fuck out of him, then hug and get drunk.

A Real Pain poster

Watched Nightbitch the other night not really knowing what it was about or what to expect. Ā Letā€™s just say I was not the intended audience. Ā Ā
Ā

Itā€™s just one womanā€™s vehicle to complain about giving up part of herself to become a mother. Ā Who knew life has trade-offs? Ā And if your husband isnā€™t helping enough, just tell him. Ā Also, if he supports your decisions, but not in the way that you want him to support your decisions, just tell him.

Iā€™m sure some people out there will find it transcendent, but I just found it indulgent. Ā
