The movie you just watched

Juror #2 - Thought this one was really great.  A lot of moral dilemma and discussion about how your past can affect how people perceive you for life.  It was missing a 5-10 minute scene to explain a pivotal plot shift, I thought, but otherwise liked it.  Great performances throughout.  Not sure why WB buried a good late career Eastwood movie, but that studio is a mess right now, so who knows.

On Max.

The Brutalist. It is a lot of movie. Love the swing

This is one I want to watch.

Oldest’s fiancée joined the Academy this year (following a successful run through last year’s festivals) so we are going to watch this and a few more tonight while they are visiting for New Year’s. (They give members an App to watch all the potential nominees).

That’s awesome. Seems obvious, but I’d suggest making your setting as theater-like as possible for this one, particularly with the audio. The score was tremendous.

Double Feature last night:

Carry On: about what I expected and we enjoyed it

Tag: very enjoyable…not sure if it was the movie or me (pizza and wine effect) but it seemed to drift a little in the middle…but ended up being a good random flick

An ex-colleague was in the real-life group that Tag was based off from Spokane.  It makes sense if you know him.  Wasn't excited to see him buck naked in the shower in the closing credits getting tagged.  The guy getting tagged at his father's funeral is a true story.

I went back and watched Triple Frontier the other day. Not bad. Came out 5 years ago, so SPOILER ALERT, but you've been warned. I will just say this - recommended with some reservations (described below with spoilers).

It was a pretty well executed heist film. Some ex-military guys steal a shit ton of money from a drug lord and their escape goes wrong. It actually works well because they didn't have issues (well maybe 1) because they were stupid. Actually they were greedy, which is a normal motivation. In the end one of the guys dies and they escape with a lot less money than they planned or stole (which was more than they planned).

The end felt a lot like Carlito's Way (SPOILER ALERT FOR A 30 YEAR OLD MOVIE), where he almost got out and then was killed by some 2 bit dude that appeared for 10 seconds at the start of the film. In this case Affleck get's got by some kid that he pissed off for obvious reasons, but because he wasn't one of the drug lord's guys it felt not quite right.

Anyway, that's the reservations, entertaining 2 hours, I didn't mind watching it.

Chalamet pulls off the impossible with a more than credible rendition of Dylan.  But it's the supporting cast that really make the movie imo.  These are the characters who displayed actual depth.  Elle Fanning, Ed Norton and the actress who played Joan Baez.  All fantastic.

I'd also add Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash

Watched Conclave and Heretic tonight.

Conclave is really good Oscar bait with amazing acting all around but isn’t quite the masterpiece I’ve heard it was. Still a great thriller and worth seeing.

Heretic took a bit to get going but I really enjoyed it overall. If you like religious horror you will love this. Hugh Grant was great.

Watched Heretic tonight. Enjoyed it as well.

A Real Pain is damn good. Culkin is phenomenal and the screenplay is brilliant.

Yeah, this needs more exposure. Having a relative who is so similar to Culkin's character was like an on-screen family reunion for me. You want to tell him to STFU, then beat the fuck out of him, then hug and get drunk.

A Real Pain poster

Watched Nightbitch the other night not really knowing what it was about or what to expect.  Let’s just say I was not the intended audience.

It’s just one woman’s vehicle to complain about giving up part of herself to become a mother.  Who knew life has trade-offs?  And if your husband isn’t helping enough, just tell him.  Also, if he supports your decisions, but not in the way that you want him to support your decisions, just tell him.

I’m sure some people out there will find it transcendent, but I just found it indulgent.

I watched Conclave and thought it was great. Excellent acting and photography and a good mystery. I’ve always been fascinated by the pope, cardinal, election process of the Catholic Church. It has been shown before in The Shoes of the Fisherman and Angels and Demons. I would also recommend Conclave. We need more movies like that.

Finally got to see Conclave tonight. I loved it, but I also love watching UK shows so this was right in my wheelhouse. Just some great acting with three guys in particular in Fiennes, Tucci and Lithgow that I really enjoy.

Conclave is very well done.

flowed perfectly. Would recommend

You pretty much just saw the movie, but still would highly recommend for something fresh and outside the box. Also for the theaters, but I still love going to the movies. Young kids might find it a little stressful as they don’t won’t any harm to come to the animal characters.

Will go see ‘No Dirction Home’ again soon, very few faults in this movie.

Sick in bed so a few:

Green Room: Patrick Stewart as a white supremacist who terrorizes a traveling rock band who witnesses something they shouldn’t have. Not bad.

Rebel Ridge: Could have been called Black Reacher. Netflix. Pretty good. Probably best if you know nothing about it. Lead actor could be a star.

Dragged Across Concrete: very slow burn from the writer / director of Bone Tomahawk. Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn are great. I really liked it.

I guess it doesn't have its own thread but I saw A Complete Unknown and loved it.  Timmy did great.

Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash also stole every scene especially near the end when he had to move his car.  "June left last night with her mama..."  gives look

The Substance.  That was an awkward watch with my wife and 15yo son.  They bailed on it a little past halfway through, and I'm glad they did.  I clicked through the second disgusting half.  Gross.  Softcore porn gone wrong.

That first half tho!

I'll just leave this NSFW link here.  Don't click it if you're mom has a blocker on your internet.

Count of Monte-Cristo  ~3 hours of good to quite good

Pros

  1. Not normal Hollywood commercial garbage
  2. Sound design was GREAT
  3. Cinematography was beautiful
  4. NOT Marvel

Cons

  1. Subtitles but it didn't move to fast to read and enjoy
  2. I thought the ending could have been better, great setup that fizzled a little bit

Don't watch the trailer if you are going to see it, or if you don't know the premise of the story

Spoiler

Watched Gardens of Stone for the first time in a while and forgot what a good movie it was.  As someone who served in the Army a few years later, the technical advisers on this movie did a great job.  The army stuff is really good.  Very underrated movie IMO.  A good look at how Vietnam divided the army in much the same way as the rest of the country, but mainly just some excellent performances from James Caan, James Earl Jones, etc.

I saw a TikTok about the "best action movies of 2024", so I decided to watch a few the guy listed. Granted, this is one guy's opinion (tiktok name is Brandon Toks Movies), but I think he has a very good list. I watched all these in a two week span:

"Kill" - This is an Indian movie and I REALLY liked it. About 45 minutes in the thing really flips a switch and just gets BRUTAL. It was pretty high-energy before, but they turn it up to 11.  I think even the trailer or movie poster says "the bloodiest movie ever to come out of India". Again, first one on the list I watched and it was GREAT.

"Maharaja" - Another Indian film. Different than your typical "action" movie. Great story. Great film. Kinda jumps around but kept me entertained the whole time. Of all of these listed it probably has the least amount of "action" (still has plenty), but it is a different kind of movie. Overall, I think this was my favorite out of the ones I watched.

"Monkey Man" - saw this when it came out. (Yeah, I guess I like Indian movies). I really liked this movie too, but think Maharaja (movie as a whole) and Kill (action) are better.

"60 Minuten" - German film you can find on Netflix. About a UFC fighter who has 60 minutes to get across town to his daughter. Yeah, it is not as simple as it seems. :) Good movie, but my least favorite of the ones listed.

"Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In" - I actually started a thread on this one. If you are a fan of old-school kung fu kick-assedness, this is your movie. The fight scenes are crazy. Pretty good story, but I kinda lost track and just wanted to see more fighting. Can't get over some of the scenes. Very cool.

In case you are wondering, here is the guy's full list:
10: The Beekeeper
9: Kalki (no idea)
8: The Shadow Strays (Netflix; was gonna start soon)
7: Kill
6: Maharaja
5: Mars Express (No idea)
4: Monkey Man
3: 60 Minuten
2: Twilight of the Warriors
1: Furiosa - Mad Max

I watched Den of Thieves on Max because the sequel just came out. It’s a pretty poor and complete ripoff of Heat. Probably not worth your time unless you just love heist movies and will watch anything.

The Heat reference is reasonable, but I disagree it's not an enjoyable ride with a nice little ending.

Twilight of the warriors was a good flick. Drags a little at times but definitely worth the watch if you like over the top Kung Fu style flicks.
