Speaking of Hugh Grant, despite being an adult in his heyday and vibrantly remembering his being busted with a prosty and going on late night talk show to apologize to America (because we didn’t have screen shots or apologies written on a note app to share on Instagram in 1997), I realize I have never seen a movie he’s in.

Notting Hill (1999) with Julia Roberts changed that for me.

I actually really enjoyed it. I am guessing that will buy me a fair amount of ridicule here, but maybe I’m just a sap.

Also, the hand Otto Hightower as the Welsh deadbeat is one of those “wow, that’s the same guy” moments for me.

Hugh Grant is kind of my "guilty pleasure" actor.  I can't help it--I love Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The turn his career has taken is really interesting.  He went from purely comedy (and primarily RomCom) to drama and now horror.  The Undoing on HBO with Nicole Kidman was fantastic.  And now Heretic--I thought it was really enjoyable.

Just saw Black Bag. I enjoyed but I wish there was a bit more meat on the bone but it was obviously a limited budget. It’s a quick 90 minute watch. My only real complaint is the cinematographer really lived over exposing light sources. Holy shit this movie was murky and blinding at the same time.

I loved it.  It was the best movie I've seen in a while.

One thing you only notice if you've spent a fair amount of time in the UK--they nailed the "British institutional lighting" thing.  I don't know what it is, but British florescent office lighting is just a little different than it is here.  And when you see it, it definitely stands out to you.

Black Bag. tight, smart, fast little story. had a definite Oceans 11 feel. Pierce Brosnan was excellent the short time he was onscreen. Cate is just stunning, getting better looking with age. she's my favorite actress! enjoyable watch.

I saw it today and thought it was really good.  Great performances by the whole ensemble.  The plot reminded me of a spy movie crossed with an agatha christie style whodunnit.  I also laughed out loud at some of the reveals on the intraoffice fucking around.

Fasbender and Marisa Abela had good chemistry, especially in the polygraph scene with her flirtatiously talking about flexing her sphincter

Outstanding.

Almost watched it yesterday but somehow ended up on Hostiles with Bale and Rosamund. Pretty good flick. A “western” in that it’s about late 1800s American west.

The Handmaiden - This was #24 on The Big Picture's best of the 21st century, so I decided to watch it.  What a wild fucking ride and damn good movie this is. I am by no means a Park Chan-Wook expert, but I have seen Oldboy, so I get the idea.  This is similar in that it is really twisty, sexually charged and depraved.  It is also impeccably made.  The production and direction are top notch.  I really enjoyed it and recommend giving it a look if you're up for a foreign thriller.  I went in blind and would recommend the same for anyone else.

Poor Things.

I guess I’m late to this party but I’m pretty sure some writers sat around and said let’s just see how fucked up of a story we can possibly tell. Damn.

Asphault Jungle.  1950.

Purportedly the first time that the criminals were the main characters instead of the cops.  I was very surprised how most of the score was quiet.  No violins or intensity noise during the crime.  The middle part was a bit dull but the plan and the escape were great.  Surprised to see that Marilyn Monroe had such acting skills.  The ending narration from the police commissioner must have inspired Dragnet.

Love the characters in this movie. Heard that Huston learned how to develop characters full from documentary work during WW2.

Just watched Carry On last night...fun little dumb flick to watch on a Friday night at home.  Nothing great, but not bad.

Jason Bateman was too likable as a bad guy honestly...

Smile 2. Fucking boring. Lots of long slow scenes that I suppose were meant to build tension but it didn’t do it for me. I just wanted them to get on with it.

Great film. The three scenes that stuck with me were; 1. When Denzel’s character gets the whip after he was caught looking for shoes, 2. When Denzel’s character explains to Broderick that the flag is not his flag and, 3. When the soldiers are singing and talking the night before battle.

Just a terrific film.

ALWAYS a stop a watch...hell I sometimes stumble across reaction videos on Youtube(where someone is watching for the first time, and usually someone who's African American) and watch those.  Most of them can't even watch the whipping scene...the scene that literally won Denzel his first Oscar.
