The movie you just watched

When do we get past the Covid movie making delay and get decent movies in theaters consistently again?  Seems like for the last year 1/4 of the movies showing are horror movies and most of the rest are just bad.  Current options at the draft house close to me 80 for Brady, Knock at the Cabin, Pathaan, Plane, M3gan, Puss in Boots (at night too) and Avatar.  No wonder they sent out $20 off food coupons at Christmas.

I’ve heard good things about Knock at the Cabin, Plane, Megan, Puss in Boots, and Avatar (for the spectacle not the plot).

got around to Babylon tonight...frenetic. stressful. dazzling. left me wired. i found it quite enjoyable.

music was outstanding! halfway thru i realized i'd been tapping my foot nonstop. had to look it up... sure enough, it's nominated for an Oscar for music. i'll be rooting for it, and also adding the soundtrack to my playlist.

it's also nominated for costume and set design. i could see it winning any/all of those.

Was Steve McQueen not available?

Actually, he wasn't and Garner was well known as a racer. You should watch the behind the scenes promo they made. Giant Panavision cameras strapped to the cars at speed. They handled like a camel.

Wife put on a movie last night called Fall. Two good looking broads who speak strictly millennial climb a 2000 ft radio tower in the middle of the desert and get stuck. Made me sick from vertigo, which I don’t even have, and the dialogue was atrocious. Stupid all around, would not recommend.

Watched Pale Blue Eye with Christian Bale the other day.   I was entertained but I doubt I'd ever watch it again.   Had it on in the background while I did some work and it held my interest but not a great film by any means.

We thought it was good, interesting but not great

Okay, during a discussion of the films of Ryan Gosling (maybe on the Netflix thread when The Gray Man came out??) several of y'all said 'you have to have to watch The Nice Guys.' Ryan G. plus Russell Crowe, et al.

You all were right, so very right because we laughed so hard we were crying. I had gotten busy and forgotten about the movie and it showed up on the suggestions (on Netflix), it rang a bell, and we loved it, absolutely loved it. Crazy events but couldn't look away because what insane thing was going to happen next. Also thought the young actress that played his teen daughter was pretty good in her role. Will probably watch it again before they remove it.

Thanks for the rec.

Wish the Sound of 007 had included a moment to highlight Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name".  It's way better than Duran Duran's garbage IMO.

I was surprised that Jack White riffed on the opening to this song in Another Way to Die, the Quantum of Solace theme.

Speaking of that movie, I watched recently after enjoying Casino Royale again, and it wasn't that bad at all upon rewatch.  I remember a lot of people were disappointed with it as a follow up to such a great film.

I've been on a Gosling binge this week/weekend.  Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) is an absolutley wonderful movie full of laughs, crys, and hot women.  Drive was a great re-watch.  The Place Behind the Pines is great and sad; it's basically two movies.  The Nice Guys (2016) is one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time, and it's really re-watchable.  I intend to go back and re-watch Murder by the Numbers (2002) with Gosling and Sandra Bullock.  I remember it being a great thriller.

Also, to whomever recommended the movie "Men" (2022) by director Alex Garland  (Ex Machina): I offer a friendly fuck you.  That was a completely unnecessary movie, and it should not have been made.

The Founder - Keaton should have won an Oscar. Kroc is the worlds most successful leach. The McDonald’s brothers were damn idiots to do a hand shake deal with him and he owes sonneborn at least half his wealth. Very good movie / watch

Outstanding movie.

It's a work in progress, but Dead Poets Society, Empire of the Sun, Goonies -- though I think we've seen it, it's just been a while -- Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Miracle.
Obviously some I want just fun/silly and not just "message" movies.

I'd add Stand By Me and The Princess Bride to the list.

My daughter liked The Holy Grail, but not Life of Brian.

Infinity Pool.  Quite depraved - I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anyone in real life - but I liked it.  The way the twists kind of built up reminded me a little of Fincher's The Game, although it wasn't as good as that.  The psychedelic scenes with flashing lights and images didn't really do much for me.

I like Alexander Skarsgard and he was good.  Mia Goth was really good as a hot little psycho.

“Don’t say ‘and stuff’. Just say they were doing anal.”

That movie is so great. I’d love to see a sequel happen.

Those are all good and I think ours have seen them all at some time or another. Some others that ours (older than your children now) also watched with us were Coneheads (my oldest loves that movie and she and her dad quote it often) and Ghostbusters (the original). Those two were funny and constantly quotable, something they seemed to enjoy doing with regularity.

They also watched a lot of the older classics with us like Casablanca, Lawrence of Arabia, The African Queen, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Bridge on The River Kwai, Paper Moon, Shane (one of my favorites), Breaking Away (we all love this movie),  Chariots of Fire, etc. I don't recall exactly the age they were watching some of these though. I would nominate Glory and also Philadelphia, but I haven't seen either in a while so don't recall if there were any visuals that might be inappropriate depending upon ages of viewers.

There's a few with Gary Cooper that my youngest and I watched and he developed a fondness for Cooper's films. The one where he is a good shot in the Army during the war, what was that one called? Dang, can't remember the title. Anyway, that one and High Noon he liked and also The Ox-Bow Incident with Henry Fonda. One we haven't ever gotten around to watching together (I haven't seen it in ages and ages) was The Cowboys (John Wayne). I saw it mentioned on the other thread (one that has scenes that give you dusty allergies). My late father loved to watch Westerns and so I saw a lot of Wayne films with him.

A more recent one, The Adam Project (Netflix) with Ryan Reynolds is pretty funny if you haven't seen it. Won't  make a top 100 list, but its enjoyable enough.

Knock at the Cabin yesterday. Another big idea out of the M. Night franchise having just a mediocre execution.
Not terrible but not worth the price to see in the theater.

Better or worse than Old?

I saw it today and liked it better than Old.  Probably about equal until you get to the ending.  I kind of wanted Knock at the Cabin to end the other way but it was still much better than the stupid ending of Old.  I thought Ron Weasley was good and it's amazing this guy has become a really good actor:

I don't think there is a movie with a more disparate level in quality between bad ass coolness (racing) and moronic deadness (romance) than this flick.  Eve Marie Saint was horrific -- is she always this bad and was just perfect in On the Waterfront?  Garner was pretty terrible too.  Was he just told to be a boring asshole in this flick.  Was Steve McQueen not available? That being said, the chicks besides Eve Marie were great - Jessica Walter wow.
The best thing was the Frankenheimer race scenes and tracing it to his later films.

Is this the one where Hart to Hart bangs his wife, or is that the Paul Newman one?
