He's applying to Harvard, Stanford, and Texas. Texas is his "fall back" because he's automatically admitted. But even though, he's seriously considering it. For those who are bemoaning the downfall of The University of Texas, you ought to take some heart in the fact that it's still being very strongly considered by such students.

If my kid had the chance to attend Harvard or Stanford, I'd explore every possible financial way to make that happen. But some parents won't make that sacrifice, and some kids might not be willing to take on that kind of debt. For those kids, UT is still a damn great school and an absolute bargain, even with tuition and housing costs so much higher than when I attended in the mid-90s.

Us woke libs on this message board bemoan the political direction forced upon our alma mater. But academically it's still a damn fine school.

No because UT has been taken over by MAGA

That's entirely true, and if he gets into Harvard or Stanford I'm sure that's where he'll end up.

But that's not really the point. The point is that he's not considering anything below Harvard of Stanford. He's not bothering to apply to Northwestern or Cornel or Berkeley--he'd rather go to Texas over any of those. And that's a helluva endorsement.

Harvard and Stanford and NW lack college football culture. That's one thing Texas can boast over the ivies and most of the public ivies. But at least Chicago has DA BEARSSssss. And Stanford is reasonably close to Levi Stadium.

I heard UT graduation this year looked like this. I didn’t believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined.

I also graduated from high school in Sugarland in 2000 and many of the kids in my classes who had better grades then me, looked like these kids. That was 26 years ago! This is not some recent change.

I graduated from high school in Sugar Land in the early 90s and there were already a large amount of Indian/SW Asians - and now some of those kids I graduated with have grandkids, so that’s three generations of American-born Indian-Americans.

It was interesting seeing who was going to aggy and who was going to UT back then.

By the way, that Nick Plumb is lying out of his ass.

His kid didn't go to high school in Texas, and I would question every one of those achievements because he is obviously trying to mislead.

Yeah, initially I thought that his kid was either a registered sex offender or scored potato on the SAT. Turns out the kid lived out of state with his mother. I think that it's pretty safe to say though that Jr. didn't get rejected from UT Permian Basin or UT Rio Grande Valley either, so the "entire UT system" is bullshit. UT Austin and Dallas maybe.

#114

I went to UT for undergrad and MBA and proud of it. But I'll be damned if I let my kids move to Texas given the politics in the state.

#115

probably the best reply on the matter. Only thing missing is pointing out that even if they are international students their insane non resident tuition is subsidizing the others.

Much has been said by racists, politicians, and racist politicians (like Bo French) about Indians and UT Austin admissions. I thought I should shed some light so their racism could be slightly more intelligent.

I've decided that I don't think UT should make a statement.

What they should do is make a throwback "We're Texas" ad spot that includes highlights from this weekend showing the team, alums, and students. And when the big WE'RE TEXAS fades in on the screen at the end it should be over that exact picture.

I've got nephews and nieces in the same boat. Some disregarded and went to UT or will be going there. The rumors of its demise are somewhat exaggerated, but in many ways, not at all exaggerated, and these kids really have no idea how much better it used to be from an institutional standpoint. They are sadly a bit accustomed to Mandatory Turning Point USA Chapters and Ten Commandments In Every Classroom, so Abbott's Enshittified UT Austin feels like Dazed N Confused in comparison. Just put your head down and get that degree, and try to enjoy some football and basketball in the process.

Lots of comments about the @bofrench post. To me, it comes down to earning the name. Texans are proud. Does anyone who lives here and has some paperwork get to be a Texan? No. Its not hateful; its about cultural pride. They may be one day, but it happens over many generations.

Microsoft, Google, Honeywell, IBM, Adobe, Fedex, Proctor & Gamble, etc. etc. etc.

More than 10% (>50, for those like me who went to UT in the 90's when it was what average intellect white guys did) of the Fortune 500 CEOs are Indian.

While the population is growing, especially in wealthier exurbs, they are still a minority so that is impressive.

Lastly, I know many first and especially second generation Indian Americans through family and kids (Frisco) and these guys and gals are just as "bros" and generally teenage turds as the next 15 year old guy and gal. Some are even "bro-ier" who like Kanye and vape or pop zyn's more than some nerdy white band kids....which still kinda shocks me as an old

Bo French voters don’t give a shit what he says. He will even pick up some votes.

But those Republicans up ballot are probably shitting their pants over the thought of a few hundred thousand Asian-Americans who might not normally vote in a mid-term deciding that they should vote. Especially in some of the suburbs where it could have an impact on local races, and not just the top-tier races. And those communities are passing French’s comments, as well as those of his supporters, around. And the media is covering it.

I’m sure Eltife was going to say something on his own, he’s a bit more liberal than a lot of Republicans and he is Lebanese-American, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Abbott and others made sure that somebody at a high level issued a statement.

And I won’t be surprised if Jim Davis and others close to his level and/or at other campuses make a statement.

This is some serious shit for Abbott and Paxton.

Edit: what do you know, Jim Davis also made a statement

Proud to stand with Chairman Eltife. Our students are exceptional. All of them are Longhorns.

I read his tweet, extremely well written and point well made (and received).

However, I can't help but think, "ew, man, that sucks." 5 hours of sleep, 0 periods, not getting to engage in things you love because there is no "practical utility" in it, like art or music. We've boiled the process down to where this is the recipe to make the sausage and I'm left thinking do I want that for my kid? Isn't there fun, well-balanced options that resemble more of what UT looked like in the 80's and 90's, or are we victims of population growth and the need to prioritize prestige/rankings (and football) above all else?

And that guy did all that and still wasn't an autoadmit. Oof. I'd quit before I even started to do something else rather than want to engage in that torture if I was 15 years old.
