kid? Isn't there fun, well-balanced options that resemble more of what UT looked like in the 80's and 90's, or are we victims of population growth and the need to prioritize prestige/rankings (and football) above all else?

It’s what Peter Turchin and others call “elite overproduction,” where a society produces potential elites faster than the power structure can absorb them. It’s similar to a game of musical chairs, where the number of chairs stays the same but the number of players increases. It causes social instability by compressing the upper middle class downwards into the middle, where they are aggrieved by a lack of status and financial security.

Lots of comments about the @bofrench post. To me, it comes down to earning the name. Texans are proud. Does anyone who lives here and has some paperwork get to be a Texan? No. Its not hateful; its about cultural pride. They may be one day, but it happens over many generations.

Does that mean we can deport Ted Cruz, Ken Paxton, and Dan Patrick?

probably the best reply on the matter. Only thing missing is pointing out that even if they are international students their insane non resident tuition is subsidizing the others.

Much has been said by racists, politicians, and racist politicians (like Bo French) about Indians and UT Austin admissions. I thought I should shed some light so their racism could be slightly more intelligent.

I'm a brown kid. I grew up in Frisco, went to a massive Texas high
I heard UT graduation this year looked like this. I didn’t believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined.

The comments though. Yikes.

It's funny, when you look at the crowd in the student section, it's quite mixed. I see white kids, Black kids, Hispanic kids, Asian kids, kids who appear to be from SE Asia and India, all of them. They're getting along. They're losing their minds over a huge comeback.

And somehow the pigs in our world see that as a bad thing.

My son, a UT senior who is as gringo as they get, has 3 roommates: another gringo, a guy whose parents are from India, and a first generation American Hispanic. I'm pretty sure it never crossed any of those four minds what ethnicities their roommates were when they CHOSE to live together.

Man, let the kids run this show. Us olds have fucked it all up.

One of my best memories from my time at UT was going out in search of dinner with my neighbors from Moore Hill 4th floor on a Sunday night.

Me, an East Asian guy, a Hispanic dude that called me Sweet Bread, a blonde and blue eyed Scandinavian dude that went by Axl, a tall goofy redneck, a nerdy black guy and a buff Vietnamese guy.

I vividly remember looking at us, and saying, yeah, this is awesome.

I briefly fell into an all Asian crowd because of my girlfriend / fiancée. But after we broke up, I started hanging with some old friends that I had lost touch with. They welcomed be back with open arms.

Friends of all ethnicities, some bi-racial, a confused gay dude and his beard wife. Come to think of it, every couple was inter-racial. I was the single dude that eventually moved out to California. But I know if I had stayed, I’d probably have married a Hispanic chick because women with olive skin, long black hair and dark eyes are hawt.

When we moved from Houston to Austin, we did a lot of looking in Lakeway. In Houston. Houston our neighborhood was very multicultural. Our best friends were families from Mexico, Brazil, Malaysia, and of course the US. US. Anyway. So one night we went out to dinner at a restaurant in Lakeway after a day looking at houses. At one point I looked around and realized, "damn it everybody looks the same."

It was at that point that we crossed Lakeway off our list and started looking for houses in a different part of Austin. Life is more interesting when you're exposed to people from all over the world and all different types of cultures.

Why is anyone surprised by how weak the response is from Eltife and Davis? They are almost certainly just as racist as Bo French. They just have the good sense not to say so out loud.

Cornyn and Karl fucking Rove of all people were willing to take stronger stances on this. Hard to believe we went from leaders like Powers and McRaven to ass clowns like Eltife and Davis who would sell their own students, alumni, and faculty down the river to kiss the ring of power.

Can you elaborate on this? I don't know anything about Davis really, but he spent five years working for Paxton while he insidiously corrupted this state. And he did his job well enough in the eyes of the Texas GQP to be rewarded with the Presidency of UT despite having no real academic qualifications.

From the outside, it looks like he sold his soul to the modern Texas GQP and one of its worst representatives, Ken Paxton, for power. Imagine that, Ken Paxton is only one of the worst representatives of the Texas GQP, there are actually worse in the form of Bo French.

Eltife was a Texas Senator from MAGA stronghold Tyler. According to most reports, he was one of the more liberal Rs in the Senate, and didnt run in 2016, but he was loyal enough to Abbott's regime to be appointed a regent. He seems to be presiding over a low-key dismantling of academics at our University. That was a somewhat different time than today in that Trump hadn't freed the masses and elites to engage in gutter racism, but the groundwork was laid.

So, there are objective reasons to believe they sympathize with Bo French, but are too subtle to come out and say so. And they stopped way short of condemning his post and him.

This form of thinking is pervasive in education especially but it eventually runs into the reality of dramatic capability differences and usually tne choice is made to debase the currency and do things like give HS degrees to illiterates. But reality catches up and that’s why today’s masters is the 1990s bachelors which was the 1980’s associates which was the 1960s HS diploma. Education currency has been debased and a weaker symbol of intellectual competence and social intelligence no longer buys as much in the marketplace.

A more amusing example is the status symbol consumer item: elites adopt, middle class strivers buy to signal aspiration, proletariat adopts knockoffs or devalued originals designed to sell to proles. The problem was never what you owned— its who you are or aren’t.

Pay attention and you see this thinking everywhere.

the tower can pretend it's over...

abc 8 wfaa in dallas just led with bo french's saturday night incipient verbal diarrhea

I don't want to minimize just how noxious French's post was by simply focusing on the political aspect. It was straight-up white supremacy--in his view, no matter how long a person has been here, if they're not white they're not a "real Texan." And as an "other than a real Texan," they should be excluded from full rights of citizenship, including (but certainly not limited to) attending The University of Texas. That's straight blood-and-soil Nazi bullshit right there, friends.

But this is the political board, after all, and so I guess this is the place to talk politics.*

And from a political standpoint, French's post was just really stupid. He was already having some problems, because the oil & gas people in Houston have been well aware of the fact that he' going to be a problem for the industry. But at the same time, that's like saying a judicial candidate is having some problems because all the litigators know he's a fuckstick. It may cause some problems fundraising, but fundamentally there just aren't enough people who know enough about the industry to affect the total vote.

So even though he's not the industry's preferred candidate, French could almost certainly coast through and win the general just by having an "(R)" after his name on the ballot. All he had to do was keep his goddamned mouth shut.

But he can't do that. He can't do that because fundamentally, he's a white supremacist. And it's like talking to a vegan--you just can't talk to them for more than three minutes without them telling you who they are. And so now the fact that the Republican nominee for statewide office is a white supremacist is hitting a broad audience. And you better goddamned believe that people are taking notice.

He actually could lose because of this. And for the rest of the party, it's a real problem. Abbott already has Paxton dragging on him from above on the ballot; how he's got French below him. And that's without even considering datacenters and Flock cameras and THC and Big Bend.

This is a goddamned perfect storm.

Oh, and those of you who are fantasizing about a Tex-Mex/Indian fusion should check out Nasha on East 7th.

*I don't know where the place to say "Nazis are bad" is on this board. I should think pretty much any place would be appropriate for that. It seems @immamac disagrees inasmuch as he thinks the game thread should be about the game to the exclusion of talking about what Nazis--who, again, are bad--think about the game and what's going on at it.

What is interesting is, for anyone who actually spends any substantial amount of time in the O&G industry (and Houston generally) you'd know that the industry at the VP suite and above is lousy with Indians and Indian-Americans too. Which doubly makes it a dumb point of view and stance, if you are trying to be the O&G politician.

I mean, I spoke to the CEO of Weatherford last week, as South Indian as a Chennai summer breeze.

And as someone said, it's not just the North Dallas exurbs (Plano, Frisco, etc.) the Indian desi diaspora started in the 80's in Houston suburbs!
