That sounds good on paper except usc and tcu are no longer ranked. LIke you said, cant put a lot of stock in early rankings.

tOSU and maybe UGA look like the only teams who can challenge Bama right now, except of course aggy.  If we play the way we have in the past 2 weeks we probably hang with anyone outside that group and perhaps even make it a game with the top 3

Now we need to see consistency every week and start playing away games like they matter.  the confidence is intoxicating, just need to make sure it doesn't evolve into that "we will win because we are Texas" thing like the 1st 2 games.

USC will struggle this year and isn't gonna look like an overly impressive win at the end of the year. TCU, on the other hand, will be fine. They have had a tough couple of weeks but they are still a good football team. They get ISU at home then a bye, they will regroup and end up 8-4 or 9-3, challenge for a spot in the conference title game, and finish ranked.

Georgia is too high as their D isn't as formidable as last year, losing 4 to the NFL and 3 or 4 other starters. Also lost their excellent RB.  They'll lose @ LSU and be out of the CFP picture as they will lose to Bama in December. LSU's offense is still stuck in the mud, got by Auburn but won't beat Bama who will be 15-0 if Tua is healthy.

Big12 is better than the Pac12 easily and even better than B1G. I'd say top to bottom it's the 2nd best conference as the ACC is trash this year.

Grading the B12 is pretty hard because it is a different size/structure than other P5s. Better than the B10 how? As in it would have a winning record if we lined up #1 vs #1, #2 vs #2, and so on down the line? Not likely. We've already seen Ohio State beat TCU, Maryland over Texas, and Iowa over Iowa State. I guess Kansas beat Rutgers, so there's that. It is, however, a more difficult conference to get through undefeated because you can't dodge quality opponents thanks to your division, ala the SEC East, B10 West, etc. In that sense, playing in the B12 is just as difficult as playing in the SEC West, if not more. Kansas sucks but you have to be ready for eight hard fought games otherwise.

when was the last time UT was ranked this high? (preseason rankings don't count)

Thought it was Sep 2013, when y'all strolled into Provo, ranked #15, but it might have been after the ND upset 2 years ago?

Kentucky a big surprise.

Duke up there too. Syracuse may get there soon. The ACC is weird this year.

Syracuse has a chance to make some noise against Clemson on Saturday.

That is actually pretty spot on right there.

Notre Dame has Stanford up next on the schedule. After that it gets progressively easier for them to hang around and possibly move up depending on what others do. Would they make the CFP if they win out?

Undefeated ND or assuming 1-loss to Stanford? Both probably make it, but undefeated is a no-brainer.

I'd give a slight edge to the Big 12 right now.

They have more playoff hopefuls, but the bottom of the Big10 falls out: Rutgers, Illinois, Nebraska(what is their deal?), Minnesota, Indiana would struggle to find a win in this conference.

I never believe in the Big 10. Who was their last contender outside of OSU? MSU? Its been quite some time...

Texas has obviously been shit as of late but TCU, OU, OSU and even Baylor have all been relevant contenders in the past 10 years.

2016 Penn State was pretty good.  They had an argument, IMO, to get into the Playoff ahead of Ohio State.  Ohio State got destroyed by Clemson that year.

Good catch. Knew I was forgetting someone.

Still - they lost to a 9 win SC team in the RB iirc

Did they get better? Or was that a function of schedule?
Their win over Ohio State was as fluky as it gets (trail 21-7 through 3, outgained 410-270, returned block FG for TD to win by 3).

Then, their final 5 regular season opponents FPI ranks were 99, 30, 67, 113, and 60.  Ending on a 5 game win streak isn't some indicator of a turnaround against those marshmallows.

Then, they rallied from down 28-7 to a good, but not great Wisky team to win the B1G title game.  9 of Wisky's 10 wins that year were against the following FPI teams: 108, 110, 60, 30, 48, 42, 94, 99, 47.

Then, they lost to a good, not great, USC team, though USC really did seem to improve as the year went on.

2016 PSU was ranked #13 in FPI and #19 in team efficiency.  Good, not great.

Big 12 is rated second best in the Massey composite right now.

As they should be. Too bad the schedule sucks shit and all the teams have to play each other, then the two best have a rematch. No other conference does it. They all have easy games then couple tough ones then typically a new opponent in the conference champion.

I guess the good part is that if we are really really good, we get tested a lot during the season and rematch in championship is extra tough. Make it through that we should be ready for a real CFP run.

I don't look at the FPI rankings I just watch the games, champ.

Tell Ohio State to block a motherfucker next time if that was a "fluky" win.

lol ok champ. Maybe next time just watch, and don't construct false narratives about improving at the end of the year just because a team spends the last six weeks of the season playing Minnesota, Indiana, Rutgers and the like.

If they improved so much, why'd they go 0-2 in their last two games? Oh right, because those were the only two decent teams they played after tOSU.

Yeah, right now it's probably

1) SEC

2) Big 10

3) Big 12

4) ACC

5) Pac 12

1) SEC- Has the reigning champion, that looks to have lost no sleep & an awoken beast in UGA...

2) XII- 2 quarterbacks in Heisman race OU & WVU, & UT primed return to dominance, Tech offense...

3) PAC- Either 3 or 4 teams rated top 25, with Bears & Buffs lurking, head to head wins over B1G...

4) B1G- Same conference that lost a slew of home games to foes as Akron/ E. Mich/ Duke, ect...

5) ACC- The supposed 2nd best team in the league (FSU) lost it;s 1st 2 league games to also rans...

Texas is probably the team most would list as the third best in the B12 right now and we didn't just lose to Maryland, we lost a season opening revenge game with weeks to prepare. A game where we trailed essentially the whole time and where everyone watching knew damn well what the outcome was going to be even as Texas mounted a comeback. The same Maryland that has no coach, hates their own staff and is under investigation. The same Maryland that got smoked by Temple. Maryland is not good but they handled us, ostensibly the third best team in the conference. Stop shitting on the Big Ten.

Man, you have a different type of butthurt than Penn State football usually creates, but it is significant.

Yep, I did make an error, Penn State did come back from 3 TDs down to beat a Wisky team that beat literally no one else all season after a Week 1 two point win over LSU in Green Bay.

But let's look at those five AMAZING wins that Penn State had that led you to say they got better over the season after luckboxing that win over Ohio State:

62-24 vs Purdue - Purdue finished 3-9 that season, including losses to Cincy 38-20, Maryland 50-7, and Northwestern 45-17.

41-14 vs Iowa - Iowa finished 8-5 that season, including losses at home to North Dakota State and Northwestern, and a 30-3 beatdown by a meh Florida in their bowl.

45-31 at Indiana - Indiana finished 6-7 that season, including a home loss to Wake Forest. Five of their six wins were Ball State, Florida International, Purdue, Maryland, and Rutgers. Penn State trailed this game with 5:00 to go.  Indiana outgained PSU, but had 5 turnovers, including 2 in the last 3 minutes. Improvement as the season goes on, though!

39-0 vs Rutgers - I could just say "lol Rutgers", but Rutgers finished 2-10 with wins over Howard and New Mexico. The other 2 top B1G teams that year beat them 58-0 and 78-0.  Michigan State's only B1G win of the season was over Rutgers 49-0.  This game was 9-0 at the half.

45-12 vs Michigan State - Michigan State finished 3-9 that season, with 2 of those wins being Furman and Rutgers. Nonetheless, Sparty led this game 12-10 at half.

So PSU's last 3 regular season games included trailing a sub-500 Indiana team with 5:00 left in the game, leading a historically woeful 2-10 Rutgers team 9-0 at half, and trailing an awful 3-9 Sparty team 12-10 at half.  Wow, those dominating performances at the end of the season!!

Maybe watch more games, champ.
