In Washington, at any rate, over 60% of ballots are returned via drop box rather than USPS already (higher in more urban counties, lower in more rural). During the pandemic it was closer to 75%. WA has the most liberal voting laws in the country; your ballot if mailed only needs to be postmarked by Election Day, not received. This is a clear shot at that, however my guess is that there will be even more drop boxes added due to this along with some pointed commentary regarding rural and senior voters getting screwed/fed to the leopards (to say nothing of the odds your taxes may end up being late). WA is D +20 and I don't expect much change in results, but this shit pisses me off. States like Nevada worry me more than the four Pacific states, in which not a single R represents a congressional seat touching salt water.

Most states that are mail-in are blue (Washington and Oregon have been mail-in for decades). Even in those states, some races will likely be affected. WA accepts all ballots postmarked by election day, not received. While there are a lot of drop boxes here (my county has 90 or so), about a third of voters still mail their ballots in.

It's only temporary until Baird gets back, but I don't think they could win a party line vote right now. There are 431 members, Baird is out, bringing it to 430, if Massie is a no, then the GOP can't get to 215, assuming all members are present and voting and no other members defect.

CNN had an article that Trump spoke to the GOP House and Senate members at a kick-off for 2026 initiatives and elections. He apparently called out Massie as being unreliable. What a consensus builder.

Massie is actually pretty reliable. He has an ideology he abides by. You will usually know what his opinion will be and what he will do before he ever opens his mouth.

Yeah, but no.

The president can't "cancel" the midterm elections. I'm not talking about legally or constitutionally. I know Brisket will be on here momentarily to tell me that shit doesn't matter. I mean practically.

The federal government doesn't conduct elections. Elections are a state function. And the states are going to have elections. Because irrespective of anything going on in Washington, most state and local offices are up for election in November. Here in Texas, Abbott wants to be reelected. And for that matter, Paxton wants to be elected to the Senate. Those guys have pretty clear personal motivations for holding the election in November.

But beyond that, most local offices are up for election in November. And those local governments all have terms set by law--sometimes in the local charter; sometimes in state law. If nobody is elected to that office in November, it just goes vacant. So there'd be nobody on the board of your local MUD; there'd be nobody on your local school board. And because most spending for those bodies has to be approved by the board, things like schools and utilities and emergency services would come to a pretty quick halt.

That's not going to happen because Donald fucking Trump thinks he's going to lose Congress.

Now, what might happen is . . . as is becoming pretty much the norm . . . the stupidest scenario imaginable. Trump could very well send out a 3:00 AM "Truth" saying "ALL ELECTIONS IN NOVEMBER ARE CANCELED. Thank you for your attention to this matter. DJT." Is that going to have any effect of canceling any actual election? Fuck no. But what it will cause is me telling my MAGAt in-laws "yeah, guys--you don't need to vote in November. Trump canceled the elections. There are no elections. So just stay home." And I suspect I won't be the only mendacious Democrat out there telling the MAGAts not to participate in the "canceled" election.

Two recent updates from the oldest Dem congress members:

• Steny Hoyer of Maryland has announced that he will retire with this term. He's 86 and was first elected to Congress in '81

• Maxine Waters of CA has announced that she's seeking another term. She was first elected in '91 and will be 88 during the November election. She's putting herself ahead of what's good for America and the Democrat party. She says that she has more to do. You had 35 years, how many more do you need?

Pelosi (85) and Davis (84) have announced their retirement. The only other 84+ is Jim Clyburn and I haven't heard his plans.

As far as he's concerned, there will be an election for all of Minnesota's seats in the House, the constitutional offices, a US Senate seat, and the entire Minnesota Legislature on November 3.

I mean, yes and no.

"Yes" from the perspective that they are not highly predictive of how the election will turn out in November. There's nine months worth of news that's going to happen between now and voting, and opinions can (and to some greater or lesser degree, will) change between now and then.

"No" from the standpoint that it's reflective of where the public is today. Assuming you have a good-quality poll--and I don't know anything about Alaska Survey Research--it can indicate that an incumbent is in trouble. And broadly speaking, I'd say that any incumbent who is (1) trailing his opponent in January (2) by more than a point (3) in a race in which both candidates have very high name recognition, resulting in very few "undecideds" is in trouble.

And is that particularly surprising?

Alaska is different. It relies on federal spending to make life there feasible. Three things in particular hit different up there: (1) disaster relief, (2) public broadcasting, and (3) federal protection of fisheries. And Sullivan is on the wrong side of all of those. Going full Trumpkin in Washington and cutting public broadcasting and disaster relief may get you plaudits on Fox News, but it's fucking death in Dillingham.

Add to that the fact that Alaska has a very large Native American population, which is uniquely politically astute and organized. They've played ball with Republicans from statehood because it's good for business, and the tribes have a lot of business interests in Alaska. But the Republican Party until now has had the good sense not to be overtly white supremacist. And it hasn't escaped notice with the Native American population that Sullivan is a member of an avowedly white-supremacist party while Peltola is Native American herself.

I'm not at all surprised that Peltola would be leading at this point in the race. And I won't be surprised if she ends up winning.

I know there are areas of Texas that treat crude oil prices the most important news of the day. I would assume that Alaska is like that, if not more. Who doesn't like lower gas prices from a personal standpoint but if your job depends on the oil industry, you know that lower oil prices are no bueno.
