That side profile is particularly unappealing. The engine cowl (?) area in the back looks like it's a bit longer than last year, and bulky - like it has the beginning of a humpback.

Yeah, whatever you may think of the liveries aside, these cars honestly look really good. They don’t have as much of the awkward looking long rear end anymore. The proportions are good. Kind of like modern versions of the 2002-2004 era. The narrower FW helps, too.

Yep. The cars are smaller. The proportions are better. They look sexy - at least what's being released, which imho is mostly generic representations of what the cars will actually be. They still need to be smaller & lighter imho, but it's a move in the right direction.

Saw the front wing active aero today for the first time. That's take some getting used to. The worst thing about all that is the reason it's needed in the first place. Ugh. This new ruleset just seems like a mess and not very well-conceived or thought out, but wewillsee.

But some of these liveries so far. Damn. They ugly.

The pictures of these cars really look nice. A shit ton better than the tanks we have been watching. That Ferrari poster is really interesting on the evolution of the cars. Crazy how they got out of hand. The Audi looks nice.

Does anyone know if ANY of the new PU's have run for extended time on the new biofuels?

I believe Shell/Ferrari are the only ones using biofuel. The rest have gone with synthetic.

I had read somewhere that there were concerns about the ability of the fuels to perform at the level required by these PU's and that the biggest factor this year might not be active aeros, smaller tires, and new PU's, but who makes your fuel.

Long answer: Different formula, dedicated to F1 and only to the team/s the different fuel suppliers are supplying. In 2013 someone at Shell noticed me on twitter, liked what I & some other social media people were doing with motorsport stuff, and invited me, Todd & Paul from theparcferme.com & several others to visit Shell in Houston for a couple of days - to help drum up s/m buzz re: their alternative fuels, solar cars, & different 'green' initiatives. They put us up at a nice downtown hotel, fed us, and took us to their facilities both days. They showed us how they develop fuels by combining different chemicals in the labs, then test them for different characteristics that would be desirable in different applications - road cars, different kinds of racing, including F1, aviation, maritime, etc. We even got to try our hand at designing fuels.

The best part of the deal was that we'd also be Shell & Ferrari's guests in Austin for the GP, with them putting us up for the weekend at Lost Pines, taking us out for fancy dinners, etc. Got to hang out in the Shell/Ferrari suite at T1, meet Binotto, Domenicali, Marc Gene, Pedro de la Rosa, & even got to ask a couple of questions of Felipe Massa (as if we were reporters) at a big public Shell event downtown. We also got to visit the Ferrari garage and go inside the Shell trackside lab in the back of the garage with Ferrari engineer Guy Lovett. He showed us how they can run different tests right after each session and use that info to tweak & remix the fuel components in real time, session by session. /csb

Short answer: I'm sure some of the knowledge they've gained from participating in other racing series will come into play, but the fuel will be a dedicated F1 race fuel. They don't just tailor the fuel for their F1 PU. They change it race by race, accounting for the local conditions, and then tweak it throughout the weekend to account for changing conditions and get peak performance (or at least Shell does that, but I'm guessing most or all of them do it). The Aramco fuel AM F1 will be using won't be used by anyone else, anywhere. It will be designed specifically for the Honda PU.

First, thanks for the information. This is one of those areas where I seem to either find podcasters who take the "pretty fast cars go vroom" approach or I need to have a degree in chemical engineering.

I have listened to the engineer for Shell who works with Ferrari and she described from a 10,000 foot level the processes and procedures for what you outlined in your third paragraph. She made the point that one would be surprised the effects of being transported on the deck of a freighter has on the fuel which is why it is tested multiple times to ensure they are providing their team with the best possible product.

I Think the Porsche SuperCup races are still using Porsche’s e-fuel made down in Chile.

How does the ability to modify the fuel at the track not result in an unfair advantage? Is the FIA monitoring / testing every iteration that they take the track with? Seems vary strange that a team would be allowed a monopoly on the fuel that they use.
