28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

Featured Replies

That ending of the movie was an all-timer. I won’t spoil any of it other than to say that the music would sit well with many of you during that scene. Just an incredible movie. Ralph Fiennes just never ceases to amaze me. One of the best roles he has had in his career. Can’t wait for the next installment.

Going to see it this weekend at the Alamo in LA. Cant fucking wait

I think you're going to love it. Fiennes was, well, he was exactly what you want him to be in a movie and that's his incredible self. I've read some of the other reactions to this movie on Reddit and man it's getting a ton of positive feedback. I want to go back to see that grand finale and then the closing scene. I think almost everyone will love the closing scene. You just don't expect to see a movie of this high a caliber in the middle of January. I don't foresee a way this isn't one of my two favorite movies for the entire year.

Wow, what a recommendation! Thanks for posting about it--I also want to hear what resident horror enthusiast @austingirl has to say.

I've either liked or loved everything Alex Garland has done (though it's hard to "like" something as incredibly dire as "Never Let Me Go".

#5

Garland's body of work is good enough I'll tolerate the rare Annihilation for the usual 28x Later, Ex Machina, etc.

#6

I really liked Annihilation.

Anyway, 28 Years Later was really good and Fiennes was the best part. I'm looking forward to this one.

You’re welcome. When you see a movie that good other people should know about it so they can see it. I think if you really enjoy horror that this movie has some particularly grotesque scenes. I am not real big on that stuff, but if you are you’ll get a good dose of it. To me it’s rare to have a horror movie like this that also has an engaging story to go with it. This is a movie though that even someone line me with an aversion to those scenes still loved. The last 20-25 minutes or so really “kicked it up to 11.” Not sure I’ve ever seen the combination of music and what was going on in a scene meld together quite like it did. Some real brilliant filmmaking in my opinion. Several Reddit posters said their showing was applauding that scene and when you see it you’ll know why.

That's the draw for me (I think the original Martyrs and Serbian Film has forever satisfied whatever horror fetish I might have had for gross).

Garland's screenplays are always in genre but are very much about ideas, with plot subordinated to digging deeply into where that idea can take a story. Dev's, in particular, I think on a lot despite watching it once back when it was broadcast.

That's my crack, too--I kind of appreciate it when the director tries to show off, like when Joe Wright does one of his long tracking shots that are so ostentatious and yet you can't help but appreciate them.

This was awesome but holy fuck is it gruesome. Jimmy Crystal is one of the best villains on screen in a long time.

In the history of cinema there has never been a better…

dance number.

I’ve seen the original, but neither of the two sequels. Do I need to for this one?

You should see 28 Years Later first.

This was great, Fiennes amazing, and the needle drops fantastic. I think I still like Years a bit better, (connected emotionally with it more), but this was awesome.

#12

I thought Years was just ok. I was spoiled by the original I think. Will give this a shot though. May be covering my eyes at some of the gore. Not a fan of that stuff.

maybe when you see someone getting eaten alive you can yell out “that’s gotta hurt!” in the theater.

Just make it to the grand finale and last scene after that. Totally worth it and I do not enjoy gory movies. I think everyone that sees this will be left shaking their head at how great Fiennes continually is.

I have watched one trailer and seen the movie poster and I feel like I already know what’s gonna happen. and I don’t like that. glad to hear the positive reviews though.

Just walked out so I’m still stewing with it, but I far preferred it to Years and @UpperWestside didn’t oversell it.

He’ll never get an AA nom for it but Fiennes is given more to do and he’s incredible. What an amazing character that Garland dreamed up.

The hardest part to watch for me was the first scene and if the whole film was like that I don’t think I could have sat through it. As a table setter it’s a very bold “I’m not here to fuck around” statement from the director.

On that same topic, I think I preferred the more straightforward presentation than Years’ editing old footage with the new.

Finally, I don’t want to spoil it but how it ended was such a relief of suspense. It’s just really well put together.

I think you’re going to be surprised. I read the Variety review and I still didn’t see this particular story in my head.

If you love film at all, particularly theatrical, go see it-it’s underperforming relative to expectations and I don’t want Sony backing off a third installment. It doesn’t help that some dipshit production exec decided to release it in January. I bet it earns two or three times as much with a May release.

P.S. one last shout-out to Erin Kellyman who does a lot with role that’s probably pretty flat on the page. She didn’t really make an impression on me in Falcon/Winter Soldier and Solo, and she’s not what holds this together (that’s Fiennes), but she’s the Val Kilmer/Doc Holliday scene stealer of the film.

I loved this but felt like even with Fiennes a performance, Lord Sir Jimmy Crystal stole the show. He went big and knocked it out of the park, a completely malevolent force the entire time.

This movie is doing absolutely atrocious at the box office, wonder if the sequel even gets made. I like horror but was extremely disappointed in 28 years later. It started out so strong then turned into a slow-burn family drama with a really stupid ending. I have no interest in seeing this, looks like most people feel the same.

Well now I have to see it.

It would be awesome to see Chi Lewis-Parry (Samson) get a supporting actor nod. Several of his scenes are absolutely devastating and what he conveys with just subtle expressions is really good work.

@Helobious You know, I've resisted the urge, years in the making at this point, to pile on your atrocious football takes and periodically noticed you have absolutely no taste in film, but thought "maybe he's just very sheltered?"

Congrats sir, I can't keep the bile in any longer. How did you ever find yourself here, in a community whose fundamental connection is in support of higher education?

I just got back. I preferred 28 Years Later (I am dealing with cancer with two small children, so it really affected me), but had a great time. It's a really solid movie and an interesting bridge to the next one (hopefully). Feinnes and O'Connell really made the movie with their commitment to some inherently silly moments. If I tried to explain what those two are doing to my wife, she would ask if I have a head injury. But they're so locked in that they make it work.

Would definitely agree with this. Being able to convey so much while saying so little can be a really powerful way to show emotions and feelings.

This is either a years-long bit undertaken by you for God only knows what reason or you really are this board’s very own version of Karl Pilkington. Astonishing, really, no matter how you respond to this.

This also should tee up several people starringin this film for awards now that you’ve shared your opinion. That you will not see it is a detriment only to you to miss out on brilliant filmmaking. I also am not sure that you understand entirely why the film is not taking on more money. @LCHorn clearly stated WHY it is not making more money. You do not, under any circumstances, release a film as good as this in the middle of January. People just emptied their bank accounts and credit cards for the holidays. This is a movie you release during the summer. Absolutely comical release date for a film like this and it is why I said this is so much better than typical January film releases.

In short, do better and get a little more cultured and educated my man.

How much alpha dong is in the new one?

Well it’s on display, but smaller apparently. I didn’t pay a great deal of attention to that on either of the last two films, but it’s been discussed elsewhere if memory serves correct.

Really enjoyed this. Didn't love 28 Years Later, but thought it was ok. Begrudgingly went to see this one after seeing some great reviews. Can definitely say I enjoyed this one much more. And ending completely hooked me for the next.

It has to do with being released in January. Total bone-headed decision to release a movie like this right after the holidays.

They've already green-lit it and it's the end of the series, and pre-production may have even started. This one got a lot of critical acclaim which is something they really like, and they are bringing back Cillian in the next one, along with Danny Boyle as director and Alex Garland writing. It'll be fine.

Zazlav canned a for more complete Acme vs Coyote that has contributions from Dave Green (coming off an over performing TMNT) and golden boy James Gunn, and is about legacy characters with tons of merchandising opportunities. Hard to merchandise zombie dongs and Jimmy Saville wigs.

It’s coming out August 28th of this year.

I’m struggling here to see your point. That you feel 100% certain Boyle and Garland will get to make their film and you can skip buying a ticket to Bone Temple? You think businesses, particularly in a volatile industry never cancel projects? Carry on then.

I thought the single dose of antipsychotic meds partially curing samson was a bit flimsy. plus he'd need to keep taking them, so shortly after kelson dies samson would return to ripping heads off and cracking skulls open like walnuts to eat brain. but yeah it's a movie whatever. I enjoyed the movie.

do y'all think samson will return for the next movie?

it’ll still probably get made but by no means a done deal.

I liked this one a lot, just slightly behind 28 years later. Fiennes and O'Connell were great. I've like O'Connell in everything I've seen him in - Rouge Heroes, Sinners, and now this.

I hope he does. Feels like he belongs in it somewhere.
