Love that Delroy Lindo got nominated for Sinners. I feel like Sinners will win a lot of technical awards and One Battle After Another takes most of the acting awards and Best Picture. I don't have much to comment on since I just don't see as many movies that are up for the Oscars these days as I used to. But the number of nominees for Best Picture seems to have almost doubled. When did that start happening? I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

10 or so years ago?

I can't wait for the inevitable bitching on social media about Best Animated Movie/song and it being, or NOT being, K-Pop Demon Hunters/Golden. It'll be worse at the Grammy's if it wins over Taylor Swift or something

Going to be tons of fun.

This may be the second year in a row that I don't give a shit. If the studios don't make movies that aim a little higher than mutants saving the world from other mutants, the awards will lack glamor and interest. I've only seen Frankenstein of that lot, and I thought it was stilted and dull.

I really hate not being excited to see all the nominees and watch the awards. Last year was a wasteland of odd smaller films and bloated higher budget films. Who'll remember Anya next year?

#7

The Best Picture nominee expansion was around 2009 after many of the best, and most popular, films had been omitted.

Which really had nothing to do with how the amount nominated -- because there aren't that many "BEST" pictures in a year -- just that too many shit films were being nominated. Back then films still commanded public attention and the absurdity of it was noted so they changed it.

It should have happened in the late 1980's because the 90s and 2000s were packed with great, original, omitted films and filmmakers.

Now, not so much.

I mean Sinners, One Battle After Another, F1, and Marty Supreme were all fairly big movies. None of those are smaller films.

Blames the studios in the first sentence; admits to only watching a Netflix movie in the second sentence. The modern online man, ladies and gentlemen.

I haven't seen them, so I ask an unprejudiced question. How many of these do you think would be worthy of a nomination if there were not ten places? Also, in your opinion, do these films rise to the level of similar scale movies from ten or 15 years ago that would be nominated?

Really curious.

I wouldn't call them shit films. They just weren't mainstream films. Often that is the way the awards went because they are more technically sound movies in writing and acting.

There is also the marketting aspect to it too. Companies want to be able to slap Nominated for Best Picture on their DVD cases even when they don't win (well they did when they sold DVDs).

I don't know what your first two sentences mean, but low effort comments get and deserve snarky responses.

To break it down for you, speaking definitively on a topic about which you are clearly ignorant is a trait of the common online man.

As mdmost indicated, this has been a great year for original films from studios new and old. Warner Bros with One Battle, Weapons and Sinners, A24 with Marty Supreme, Sony with 28 Years Later, etc. Frankly, I would argue the one movie you've seen is the least deserving nomination - but people like Guillermo Del Toro I suppose.

Train Dreams is the type of film that would be nominated anytime over the last 15 years and never actually win. I thought it was really well done.

K pop demon hunters kicks ass.

loved that lil ass movie. The songs rock too.

Oh do NOT mistake me for hating on it. It was the most fun movie I saw this year, and the social media blitz by all the fans has been amazing. Tik Tok and Twitter really propelled this movie. Seen it several times and every song is a banger.

I'm a complete Zoey stan...love that little ditzy chaotic Makane

I hope it wins best animated movie and best song, because it's worthy, AND because of the lulz

I haven’t seen Hamnet, but it seems like typical best picture fodder. Ditto Train Dreams. One Battle After Another and Marty Supreme are both solidly in that echelon of film, Bugonia didn’t hit quite as well for me but I’d say it is too. Sinners didn’t strike me as…. As good as everyone is making it out, but I watched it in 30 minute intervals on my phone exhausted at night so it isn’t fair.

Anyways, if you don’t watch any of the non action hero movies I don’t know why you’d complain that they aren’t making enough non action hero movies. Also this year’s Predator movie was pretty good and interesting and I think not commercially successful.

Wagner was really good in The Secret Agent. I feel like this should be a big night for One Battle After Another, but Chalamet was really good in Marty. Best casting should go to Marty. Best song should be Golden.

Hardly surprising.

For some reason, you've chosen to turn a discussion involving opinions into condemnation of my ignorance. You feel that your differing opinion is somehow absolute proof that I am, well, let's go ahead and quote:

speaking definitively on a topic about which you are clearly ignorant is a trait of the common online man.

I'm sure most of mankind strikes you as clearly ignorant. I humbly take my place among them. Hear, you speak definitively on a topic about which you are clearly well-informed (my ignorance, in case you're struggling to keep up). However, in you, no one would find the common online man which is an anthropological term unfamiliar to me. More shameful ignorance on my part.

Anyway, thanks for straightening me out and putting me in my place.

You can pretty much just look at best director, and if the field of best picture was limited to 5, it would probably be the same movies.

Only F1 would be out. It's the Top Gun: Maverick of this year. Sinners has 16 nominations. One Battle After Another-13. Frankenstein-9, Marty Supreme-9, Sentimental Value-9, Hamnet-8. So in the old 5 nominee model, Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, and Hamnet are duking it out for the final spot. And going by Best Director, Hamnet would win that spot over Frankenstein.

Sinners, One Battle After Another, absolutely. The latter is PTA's No Country for Old Men. Sinners is classic Hollywood only this time told from an African American perspective. I haven't seen the rest yet so I can't speak to them. I think Best Picture is a battle between Sinners and One Battle After Another.

Of the best picture nominees I've only seen Bugonia, One Battle After Another, and Sinners, but I'm a little surprised Weapons wasn't nominated as I thought it was fantastic. I am going to try my best to watch most (if not all) of the nominees, but right now I think I lean slightly towards Sinners over One Battle After Another. Probably need to watch them both again.

#24

I looked to find where all the best picture nominees are currently streaming (if they are) and listed them below for anyone who may be curious.

Best Picture

  • Bugonia - Peacock

  • F1 - Apple TV

  • Frankenstein - Netflix

  • Hamnet - not streaming yet

  • Marty Supreme - not streaming yet

  • One Battle After Another - HBO Max

  • The Secret Agent - not streaming yet

  • Sentimental Value - can rent on Amazon, but not streaming as part of a subscription yet

  • Sinners - HBO Max

  • Train Dreams - Netflix

This is a really weird post. This year we have multiple big time original movies from acclaimed directors.

It’s always interesting to see people hating on the nominees and lamenting comic book movies without having seen the movies that are definitely not comic book movies.

This is me too. It was fine. No, it was better than fine, it was good. But it didn't reach the levels of cinema excellence usually required (or aspired) to for the awards.

Similiar reaction to Frankenstein (Sinners was better, though). It was fine/good, but not great by any stretch of the imagination.

What's weird is I pretty much only find out about movies from this forum. I hardly ever go to the theatres any more, so no trailers on upcoming movies. Most of the TV is consumed via streaming so there aren't any ads for movies other than the ones created by whichever streaming service I am on.

Frankenstein (I have netflix), One Battle After Another, and Sinners would probably be the only 3 I was aware of if I didn't go to the Movies & TV forum often.

I think he's suggesting you shouldn't bitch about the studios' output if what you say you want is original films from them but then didn't see a single one in theaters when they gave those to you. Could be wrong though.

Great year for original film, an even better year for international. THE SECRET AGENT and SIRÂT in particular are really worth a visit to the theater.

#38

I've only seen 5 of 10 for best picture which is low for me. Hamnet seemed to come and go really quickly down here. Hopefully that and the foreign language nominees should be coming back to theaters.

#40

Haven’t seen Hamnet, Sentimental, or Secret Agent yet. OBAA will and should win but Bugonia was easily my favorite this year.

it's a format question, not a resolution question. Sinners was great and original, One Battle After Another felt more clever than enduring. I don't think it's something that's going to stick me for years. Hamnet just seems a throwback in some ways to when the bard used to be mined more for drama... Shakespeare In Love anyone... Train Dreams was beautiful, but felt very much like a novella. I don't know what Frankenstein is doing on that list. Haven't seen the rest, but will do so when they hit streaming.

I'm not sure what that comment about mutants saving the world has to do with these years nominees as none of them really fit the bill

Frankenstein in not a Hollywood Studio movie:

Sentimental Value is not a HW Studio movie:

Sinners is not a HW Studio movie although a studio is involved:

Studios once cared about producing some prestige movies along with the popcorn sellers. They choose instead to put all their eggs in massive productions with very safe scripts. It's sad that Warner, a company that floated Kubrick and has a reputation for more daring decisions, is the only major Hollywood studio with a nomination.

It would be nice if the assemblage of talent that a studio can put together along with facilities could be put to use for something sort of fresh.

That's all I mean.

Oh I’m kidding. The only way for me to properly see a movie is on a Friday afternoon in a theater when I’ve already worked 50 hours and my schedule is clear. Otherwise it’s AirPods/iPhone at the kitchen counter in half hour installments after everyone is asleep and I’ve worked out and done the chores. I missed Sinners in the theater, I’m sure that would have improved it for me. Also why I haven’t seen Train Dreams or Blue Moon. Or Frankenstein.

"i lied to you" in sinners was an absolute masterpiece of an original song for use in the movie. that scene was utterly captivating and the primary reason that the movie gets so much love. and everything after that scene in the movie was shit while everything leading up to it was great.

That's a poor paraphrase. I said I wasn't excited about the nominees particularly last year. (note period) I miss studios not trying to make movies that might get nominated: studio movies can be spectacular if you try.

I said studios devote their funds to comic book movies which they indeed do. I'm not sure to which 7 studio films you refer. See above.

Pretending movies that are distributed, marketed, and advertised by major studios don’t count as studio movies is certainly a take.
