Question for Trump supporters [Don't Open if You Don't Want To Participate]

Featured Replies

Im seeking to understand. To learn. Did you vote for him both times. If so, why? Do you still support him now?

I’d like to really hear you out. Can the rest of the group let them state their peace and not neg them? Genuinely curious.

#4

Aded: What / how do you reconcile those prior election votes or current support with the Epstein List revelations?

#6

I doubt any Trump supporters will read your post and answer... Since that assumes they can read.

Yeah, no one is going to come in here and voluntarily get negged into oblivion.

This thread isn’t needed. I’ve now sat down with at least half a dozen Trump supporters to understand why they support him, and it falls into the following buckets every single time:

  1. He will make me more wealthy , even though the things he’s doing are actually hurting everyone’s wealth.

  2. I’m unable to distinguish between disinformation and real information, or I incorrectly equate things he’s done to things done by others on “the other side”, even though they are infinitely worse, like the stealing of top secret documents.

  3. My Christian religious community believes he is better for my religion, even though he is infinitely worse.

  4. I am racist, either overtly or subconsciously, and he appeals to that.

It’s just a bunch of people who are either not very bright on the subject of politics or downright evil.

I've personally known one person who's changed his views on Trump. He's a "conservative " from Wichita Falls so everyone in his family except for his gay--excuse me, "confirmed bachelor"--younger brother has been voting straight ticket R since Eisenhower at least.

2016 he voted for Trump because Clinton.
2020 he didn't vote for Trump & declared to our group of friends that it was because he was tired of the lies, drama and BS. The spirit of his deceased parents lively prevented him from casting a ballot for any D.
2024 I'm about 95% certain he voted Trump again. He retired in late '23 and suddenly inflation & affordability were his buzzwords, along with "I'll put up with some mean tweets because I don't read those anyway."

He and his wife spent most of '24 driving around the US looking for a final retirement destination. He got a kick out of sending pics of all the Trump merch stores dotting the dirt poor landscapes of Tenn and Ken. They've settled in Pensacola, naturally.

I loved the guy like an older brother. When he was a neighbor for 10 years I always told my wife that if there was ever any trouble & I was traveling or unable to get to her that she should call him first. He's a "move mountains" for you kind of friend.

And now his brain is broken. I'm just thankful that he's in FL and I don't have to witness firsthand his continued descent i to MAGA world.

Surly doesn’t have Trump supporters just libertarians who totally don’t like him but will call you deranged for questioning him because you should just ignore it and it won’t affect you.

I know a few. Actually almost everyone in my Texas circle supported or supports him. They weren’t bad people. I just want to know the thought process in voting for him. Twice

#18

I just stare at someone when their vote justification for Trump is that they had no choice but to vote for him when a <fill in the blank> is put on the ticket by the democrats.

Of course in reality, it's amazing how well Trump did in Texas voting results but so many say they didn't vote for him. they also won't say they voted for Hillary/Joe/Kamala. Which then tells us what we know to be true.

Yep. And it's No. 1 that is truly maddening at this point. I've see a couple folks I know double down TODAY on Facebook/Instagram (shit get through to me even though I actively avoid it). They're interested in that 30 pieces of silver. That's it. They're evil fucking bastards who think they're good people. Living where I live I have to keep my mouth shut, because they're everyfuckingwhere. I allow myself to rage about it for a few minutes, and I have to do that before I get in a car and drive amonst them as they can't help but be total trash in every endeavor, it would seem. I'm glad I didn't check this thread until I got to work.

2-4 doesn't bother me as much these days. People have been doing truly terrible shit in God's name forever. It's baked into our species. So is stupidity/lazyness and fear of the other. Those are flaws. The folks in group 1 are evil.

Ultimately, these people have been trained over the last 40 years that even if Satan himself rose from hell and ran for president on a platform of enslaving the human race…. That’s still better than voting for a democrat. Thus, here we are with a child rapist and convicted felon for a president, who has made four billion dollars in the last year.

#21

Why don't you tell us what reasons they could give you that, if not acceptable, will provide you with the slightest ability to say:

"Well, I can see that but I still think you are wrong."

I have a young relative who did the National Guard thing down at the Texas border for multiple months. We tend not to talk politics, other than him shaking his head when we talk about the daily outages of Trump and his acolytes. He seems to accept that Trump is a prick.

I'm pretty sure he voted for Trump solely based on "control of the border".

A sliver of my brain thinks - okay, maybe I can see that.

Setting aside the validity of the concern about the border and accepting it a true, you'd have to be blinkered to a whole lot of other shit to cast that vote. Was this relative sentient from 2016 to 2020 and early 2021?

I kind of accept that there are some Trump voters that aren't hardcore "base." In 2016, they seemed perhaps to be voting for something other than "politics as usual."

Those people seemed to have a massive case of Trump fatigue in 2020. I think low-information and even single-issue voters were sick to fucking death of Trump by then.

What's startling is how quickly those people, and some new voters, apparently, forgot what a shitshow Trump I really was and how much worse Trump II promised to be.

I think everyone now is pretty fucking sick of the Trump show. But I really fear how quickly they may forget that between now and November. I do expect him to continue the outrages through the remainder of his time in office and on earth, so it will be hard to forget.

This is fake internet points not real life like families being ripped apart on the daily or 9 people murdered by ICE so far in 2026. They can come try to advocate but they won’t because again they’re cowards.

I''m not arguing that point.

I'm just opining that asking Trumpists to explain themselves is probably a complete waste of time, but trying to figure it out for yourself is only a giant, almost-complete waste of time.

I think a lot of people way overanalyze this.

Plenty of folks view politics as a team sport. They know they will vote for whoever is wearing a certain jersey, but also know that it looks bad to treat it this way so they retroactively attempt to justify why they voted a certain way. Candidates like Trump really make it hard to pull this off without getting egg on your face.

Many otherwise smart and successful people are able to continue operating this way because their way of life isn’t truly impacted by their choices. They likely know they’re twisting themselves in pretzels, but they don’t care because this is a sport.

No different than OU fans rooting for Parker Livingstone this year because he’s now wearing their jersey.

There is no “valid concern” about the border. Cartels aren’t a border problem they’re a demand problem, all these white maga fuck muricans gobbling up meth and fentanyl like skittles. Immigrants who murder or rob or commit assault or drive drunk can get arrested and prosecuted like everyone else. Their only concern is fuck those brown people and all foreigners. If the concern is undocumented status it’s because the system is completely fucked up on purpose to make it almost impossible for most laborers to have a legal path. It’s an easy fix in Congress but they refuse because the politics of riling up racists is just too much to give up in exchange for human dignity. They’re now fucking with asylum and visas. It’s not about criminals and never was it’s about racism and bigotry. Full stop. His supporters are not good people, not a single one, they are all compete shitheels and worthless stains on humanity.

I don't disagree with your premise.

I would add that there are also a goodly number of people who mostly ignore politics but still vote, so aren't "team players." And although they may not be single-issue voters, it is often one or two issues that catch their attention and drive their vote, whether it's "the economy," or "immigration" or some combination.

Even though they ignore politics for the most part, it's hard to see how they can ignore what's really happening and how abnormal it is, even if they don't view it as threatening because they're so unplugged. In 2020, I think the shitshow had grabbed their attention. By 2024, they had forgotten.

I go to church to sing in the choir. I don't believe in God. I'm not a good person to represent the hypocrites on this. At my church the Trumpers keep that shit to themselves now. I know of one, and only really suspect a couple others.

I do believe that evil exists in this world. We put up with way too much of it.

There are plenty of justifications from Evangelicals and Mormons on voting for Rs.

1.) His court overturned Roe and wants to overturn Obergefell
2.) He publicly plays up the culture war in the position of Evangelical Christianity. This country's long usage of civil religion means that every person sees the generic "God" in public discourse as their personal version of God which means Trump's MAGA spirit yearns for a time when their personal God was the one the nation looked to for guidance. That probably derives from the unique democratization of Christianity in the United States but the historiography there is up for debate.
3.) Evangelicals and Mormons have been voting R for decades so there's momentum there

I love hearing why ‘christians’ support trump. Typically it’s the most hypocritical, selfish, illogical, ignorant reasoning you can imagine. The best part is it’s always the dumbest person in the room doing the pontificating and defending the congruity between their ‘politics’ and their ‘christian’ beliefs. This guy isn’t down on anyone’s religion per se, you do you, Jesus, their are hillbillies up the Appalachia handling snakes thinking that they’re getting closer to God and I hope everyone of their dumbasses gets bit on the face, more than once, again, you do you. But don’t misalign the teaching of your God/Jesus/Allah/Buddah/TomCruise as a defense for any political affiliation or vice versa, especially when one’s self doesn’t follow or misinterprets their own religious ‘beliefs’.

He won't let anyone forget while he's in office. It's against his nature. I'm also shocked how much people forgot in just 4 years though.

Because he made it okay for them to be themselves -- racist, misogynist, xenophobic, fearful of the more intelligent and more educated -- in public again. He's dog whistling a white Utopia to them, and more and more openly, and they love him for it.

It's not about a tax cut. They always get that from any Republican, and they've never been this rabid about any of them, even Reagan. It's not about any other conservative tenet, either.

This is about kicking brown people out and putting women back in their place. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar.

I voted for him in 2016 because I thought he was the better option.

I voted for Biden in 2020 because I knew he was the better option.

I voted for Harris in 2024 because I knew she was the better option.

The midterms will hopefully be a blood bath. Getting off to the right start with the recent special elections.

I do wish people on here would stop auto-negging any Trump supporter that speaks up. Clearly they aren't enthused to express their support, and the possibility of being crowd sourced makes them even more hesitant.

I think we should be able to criticize and argue without the threat of them losing access to Surly.

I understand. But if the desire is to provide a different perspective that might provide a little bit of sunlight to their thinking, that's eliminated by crowd sourcing or auto-negging.

We've have a lot of former Republicans or libertarians on these Longhorn political forums over the years, and through earnest and fruitful discussion, a lot of those people have changed their thinking. I know MAGA Is a completely different animal, but I don't think we should ever give up trying.

She cared a little because she heard about the challenges we were having with HISD and how the fascist party is destroying education, making it more costly for me, making it more costly for my kids. Now they don't want to hear it.

There's no light to be shed on their thinking. They are hateful, amoral, pieces of shit, with zero policy opinions whatsoever. I'm not going to list everything because that would take all day but there's not a single thing at this point that any of them can say that would make their support for this bullshit palatable. They are human garbage. Period. Fuck them, they can go jerk off on texags if they need a message board to stroke their bullshit.

Edit: To add that if someone is genuinely interested in their thinking, seriously, go the the texags politics board. They explain in very much detail what motivates them. Hell, sign up and ask them yourself. You aren't going to get any honesty from any surlyite who is still in support of this crap.

If the light hasn't turned by now, it isnt gonna turn on. The republicans you are referring to in your post were in a political party, the trump supporters that still support him today are in a cult. If you are fine with a complete deconstruction of our constitution, the murder of american citizens by his goon squad, and a president that is openly talking about taking control of elections, you are permanently fucked in the head. Cults dont dissolve, they Jonestown or Waco. Fuck em, I've moved on from thinking they can be turned. Any time and energy is better spent on the independents and the shockingly high number of people that still dont vote.

Americans have a bit of navel-gazing blindness in treating Trump as a unique, norm-breaking type of political figure. In fact, he is depressingly familiar and his type probably represents the most common form of “democratic” figure worldwide and historically. He is also the avatar of a worldwide populist wave encouraging a shift to his type of politics to places where it previously lacked a foothold.

“Democracy” understood as a competitive and collaborative contest of ideas and proposals, expressed on the basis of mostly individual interests and core values, with an aim to find broadly functional and satisfactory outcomes is a very unusual form of government and political ideology. It basically only ever existed in Western European democracies and their cultural colonies. It was formed in the United States and Great Britain mostly during the 19th and early 20th centuries and eventually mostly prevailed over alternate theories in the Civil War, two world wars, and the Cold War. Many smart people believed it was the logical end point of all cultures.

This did not happen and in most places “democracy” is conceived as a brutal, all-or-nothing competition for resources, social capital, and power between groups of people organized along identitarian lines.  The basis for these groupings changes (confession, ethnicity, language, clan, geography, superficial “ideology”) in the local context, but the particulars matter less than the concept of democracy as an almost existential struggle between groups, played for keeps. In this context, democracy is less of an active debate and living process and becomes a simple headcount based on group affiliation. Winning becomes a matter of changing the rules of who you count, or who gets to be counted, or simply pretending to count.

Put simply, almost every successful “democratic” politician outside of the North America and Western Europe approaches politics exactly like Donald Trump, which is why Trump is able to easily find common ground with people like Modi, Erdogan, Buekle, and Orban but doesn’t even get among with fairly conservative Western politicians. In fact, Trump is notable for making the borders of the “in-group” more permeable than most global politicians of his ilk and less rigid and exclusionary than say, Modi— although this shifting with the rise of Miller acolytes.

The “genius” of Trump lies in awakening an identity consciousness among swathes of the American populace that previously viewed politics through the first lens and then linking that identity to his person. He was helped along in this by a willingness of political opponents to more or less advocate for the second theory of democratic politics, but only for groups that lacked the current political capital to really play the game for keeps. This conception of democracy is not going anywhere and is rather gaining ground in the West rather than exhausting itself elsewhere.
