Drove the Davis Mountians loop yesterday with the wife for the first time. Holy fuck. The whole drive is beautiful, but the north side of the loop (118 from the nw all the way past the observatory to Ft Davis) is absolutely insane.

Just jaw droppingly beautiful, desolate, and unspoiled. Feels exactly like Colorado or Utah.

Yup. For example, most people think Big Bend National Park has always looked like it has (desert floor is dusty, arid, loose dirty with little vegetation). Truth is, before it was overgrazed and before the water was diverted away the late 1800s, BBNP actually used to look more like Fort Davis than Chihuahua. It used to be covered in many types of grasses and shrubs, and was actually slightly green in color at one time

I recall reading how the candelilla wax industry decimated the Candelilla plant in the Big Bend area. Residents/companies ignorantly harvested the plant to obtain wax not knowing that it could take decades for a full, natural regenerations of plants.

And as far as overgrazing, the land could support migrating buffalo herds but not year round cattle.

Adding another 112 miles of border wall as well…..this time between the DOM rock and Lajitas, the from Lajitas to Santa Elena Canyon, then from just east of the canyon, through Boquillas then almost all the way to Sanderson

Total for the entire project now more than 250 miles through a State Park, a National Park, and a protected international biosphere preserve. Last pic is a pic of the overall project

Seems like Texas Monthly could do a really strong piece on this because I haven't seen any reporting on it, and this should be a huge deal to Texans.

I Emailed both Ben Masters (The River and the Wall documentarian) and the Big Bend sentinel for info on ways to get in touch with local affiliates, citizen groups, environmental groups, etc that I can contact to help aid in the fight. Will report back if I get anything.
