Greg Brown, Founding Guitarist of Cake, Dead at 56

Greg Brown, the founding guitarist of CAKE who played an integral role on the band’s first two albums, has died.

Damn. I absolutely wore out the first 3 Cake albums. That guitar tone was fantastic.

I saw this yesterday, what a bummer. I loved early Cake

RiP. Love cake.

Well shit

I want a girl with a short skirt and a long....................................... jacket

RIP

I went through a Cake phase for sure. In no small part to the guitar sounds on those first couple albums. I even had at least one Deathray CD.

56 is too young.

RIP. Great band.

That's unfortunate to hear. I love those first two Cake albums. Enjoyed getting to see them at Numbers in Houston in 1997.

That sucks. Always enjoyed their music.

First concert - Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion - No Doubt, Cake, The Vandals.

I was never really dialed in besides hearing a couple of their hits -- what songs from the first two releases should I check out? I'm interested in these claims of great guitar tone.

"Jolene" would be my Exhibit A. "Italian Leather Sofa", "Nugget", "Rock & Roll Lifestyle"

Yup.

Between that and ILS, Cake's skewering of wealthy hipsters was elite.

Oh yeah, I remember "R&R Lifestyle". Cool sounding band. I'm not a huge fan of the droll vocals, but I get it.
