Hannah Bilka from Coppell, Tx buries it

There’s an Olympic hockey player from Coppell? There has to be more to that story.

The Stars moved to Dallas over 30 years ago

Bilka was born and raised in Coppell, Texas, to parents Dan and Patricia Bilka. She has three siblings: Christina, Stephanie, and Anthony.[8] Bilka was inspired to play hockey by watching her older brother Anthony, who played Division III college hockey.[2] She became passionate about hockey after watching the 2010 Winter Olympics.[2]

Growing up in Texas, a non-traditional hockey market, Bilka faced significant challenges in pursuing the sport. Due to limited opportunities for girls' hockey in the area, she played on boys' teams alongside fellow Texas native Ally Simpson.[2] Bilka had to be proactive in her college recruitment, emailing coaches directly since scouts were unfamiliar with players competing in boys' tournaments in smaller hockey markets.[2] At age 14, she left home to attend Shattuck-St. Mary's, a boarding school in Faribault, Minnesota, known for its elite hockey program.[2] While at Shattuck-St. Mary's, she also played lacrosse and ultimate frisbee.[9] She helped lead the Sabres to a Tier 1 U19 national championship in 2018 and a runner-up finish in 2019.[9]

Bilka majored in communications at Boston College, where she was named to the National Honor Society and received The Hennessy Family Scholarship Fund and The Lombardi Family Scholarship Fund in Memory of Joseph J. Lombardi.[8] During her time at Boston College, she worked as a statistician for the Boston College athletic communications office.[8] She later pursued a master's degree in sport management at Ohio State University.[9]

This lady on the broadcast just said on a Canada rematch for gold "The US right now is better on paper"

On paper? Bitch - we just beat them 5-0.

Bilka is a Czech/Slovak surname, most hockey-crazed nations in the world. Likely deep genetic coding to get on the ice.

Canada isn’t expected to medal. They’re very down this cycle.

The women's tournament has a strange setup. All of the five teams from Group A (with the USA and Canada) automatically qualify for the knockout round with the top 3 of the 5 in Group B moving on.

So basically the first round for Group A is just a glorified scrimmage with the only thing at stake being seeding for the knockout round.

As for the men, EVERYONE qualifies for the knockout round with first round byes being the only real thing at stake.

Wdym first mover? Like the US was ahead of the curve and other countries have to catch up?

It's nice but it only lasts for so long. See - soccer. Teams are catching up in basketball, too.

There are some sports that we will simply always dominate because of the talent pool and other built-in advantages. See - swimming.

And then obviously the winter stuff is highly geography dependent.

They had the 2nd best odds to win gold going into the Games. And 3rd best wasn’t even close.

Then you should put down a sizable bet. Here’s Fan Dual’s odds.

In several women’s sports, like hockey and soccer, no other nation comes close to investing as long and as much, in the women’s game. Direct result of Title IX, and that is the first mover advantage. Countries can begin to catch up but the head start is substantial.

Compare to men’s hockey where even our NHLers haven’t beaten the world at the Olympics.

Yeah because we totally should expect to be better than Canada.

not sure this is the best comparison.

Nobody had a bigger "first mover advantage" than the Nordic countries in...Nordic Skiing. Which they lost when the Russians cheated their asses off, then regained, then lost when Russia cheated again, and now will likely hold until someone like China decides to try their hand at doping.

We are a wealthier country with more people in the NE/Great Lakes/PNW than all of Canada not counting hockey elsewhere, we should be able to rival Canada. There’s not a huge delta in overall hockey participation but there is in elite prospects: both attributable to the edge in infrastructure for men’s hockey CAnada has. Nord dominance unless bigger countries cheat is also an argument that supports me.

The U.S. was the first country to and invest in and build out infrastructure for women’s soccer and hockey and theater creates serious advantages. I’m honestly surprised such an uncontroversial observation is getting pushback.

2026 Winter Olympics: USA hockey kicks off tourney of high expectations vs. Latvia

amNewYork

6–7 minutes

The USA men’s hockey team kicks off its 2026 Winter Olympics with a contest against Latvia on Thursday. It’s the first of three round-robin games for the Americans, who are looking for their first gold in this event since 1980.

This is a brand new era for American hockey. There’s not a single player with any previous Olympic experience. Stars like Auston Matthews, Quinn Hughes, and the Tkachuk brothers have built their reputation in the NHL and are ready to build their international hockey legacy on the biggest stage.

The first challenge of the event will be taking on Latvia with puck drop at 3:10 p.m. ET on Thursday. The Americans are heavy favorites and should be able to pick up the victory relatively easily. While the game isn’t expected to be close, there are still several key storylines that’ll provide some intrigue throughout this game.

Can Latvia put up any type of fight?

This is the best American hockey team ever assembled, with star players up and down the lineup. They have an embarrassment of riches at every position, and on paper, it should be enough to blow Latvia out of the water.

Latvia has six current NHL players and 10 guys with NHL experience on its roster. Kaspars Daugavins, who last played in the NHL during the 2012-13 season, has been named captain for the tournament.

Keep an eye on 18-year-old defenceman Alberts Smits, who is expected to be one of the top picks at this summer’s NHL draft.

One player who could swing things is Latvian goalie Arturs Silovs. He has a history of showing up in big moments and helped lead his country to third at the 2023 IIHF World Championships with an incredible performance. He was named tournament MVP for his efforts. The Pittsburgh Penguins goalie also had a great run with his former team, the Vancouver Canucks, during the 2024 NHL Playoffs, nearly knocking off a strong Edmonton Oilers team in the second round.

Latvia is definitely undermanned in this matchup, but it has a few interesting players who could help it keep things relatively close. Will they be able to do so?

How will Mike Sullivan set his lineup for the opening game?

The only problem with having so many talented players on one roster is that it can be difficult to find the best lineup. New York Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan is leading this American roster, and with two Stanley Cups under his belt, he’s got the experience needed to win in big moments.

So far, Sullivan seems to have Vegas Golden Knights star Jack Eichel between the Tkachuk brothers and Matthews, the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, between Matt Boldy and Jake Guentzel in his top-six. The defensive pairs look similar to what he used at the 4 Nations Face-Off, but with the addition of Quinn Hughes, who was injured for that tournament. The full lines at practice are as follows per The Athletic’s Michael Russo.

Forwards

Brady Tkachuk – Jack Eichel – Matthew Tkachuk

Jake Guentzel – Auston Matthews – Matt Boldy

Kyle Connor – Dylan Larkin – Tage Thompson

J.T. Miller – Brock Nelson – Jack Hughes

Extras: Vincent Trocheck, Clayton Keller

Finland vs Slovakia men's underway. To me, the defending gold medalists have one of the best logos in sports:

They need to bring back Suomi on the jerseys though.

Oops, I'm watching a replay. Rough 1st game for the defending champs.

I believe the Latvia team is challenging that is unfair that the USA team is better than them between periods.

How many goals can a Tkachuk make before a Tkachuk gets a goal?

They called goal tender interference when the USA player was brought into the crease by a defender, it had no effect on the redirect shot at all.

The possible offside was very close and there was no clear indication by replay to show any offside.

The Lativia goal was scored only seconds after a Latvia player delivered a clear elbow to a USA players jaw, announcers and USA team couldn't believe there was no penalty call.

You would think the head ref was a Russian, but they aren't even in the Olympics, maybe he's Canadian.

Order is restored as the USA scores three quick goals before the end of the second period.

It's a shooting gallery like one of those games at the state fair now for the USA squad.

It's 4-1 at the end of two, could easily be like 8-1 or 9-1.

The rout should be on for the third.
