on the bright side, your clicks are going to that chef, not to Jamie Oliver

and the chef knows not only what oliver has done wrong, but that the correct ingredients are available at tesco

Helps me to understand the frustration of Texas ex pats with whatever gets called Tex Mex wherever they are.

Jamie Oliver just declared war on Mexico and Texas. I'm going to eat a huge plate of cheese enchiladas and refried beans and retaliate accordingly.

I will name my toilet "Jamie Oliver."

At this point Oliver is Hitler and the whole world hates him.

I mean, what can you expect from a guy with a heavy British accent.

These people eat baked beans for breakfast, with tomatos. A full English has its own merits, sure, but piquancy is not one of them.

It is kind of funny watching the guy with the European English accent trash it, though.

#21

I would probably love a full english breakfast but baked beans are such a deal killer. They are disgusting and it seems like such a stereotypical Americanization of drowning something healthy in ungodly amounts of sugar that I can't believe any other country doesn't just point and laugh at the idea.

He's from Washington state but has lived in Europe for a long time.

They don't? I hate to tell ya, but English food has been a joke for a long time. Right on up to being the real reason for the English empire: The desperate need to get access to decent cuisine.

Counterpoint: Indian food in England. I've had plenty that is fantastic.

Chicken masala originated in the UK.

How is that a counterpoint? They had to take over India first to get the cuisine. And Indian cuisine is not English cuisine.

How about a kidney pie? retch

I have no idea what point you think you're making. Carry on, I guess.

Agreed, baked beans are just so bad. Would be so much better with refrieds. Lard>>>sugar

I love the tomato beans but I grew up with them. I was happy when Costco started selling the six packs of them last month.

Full English is one of the world's great breakfastd. But, confession - I leave the beans untouched. Because fuck shitty underflavored sweet beans.

That said, I have seen more than one English girl HAPPILY make and eat a breakfast of "beans on toast." It's as sad as you think it could be.

Also, the full Scottish breakfast is even better (you get lorne/"square" sausage, AND you get crispy haggis to go with the black pudding).

Tikka Masala, invented at Shish Mahal in Glasgow:

We've been there, and my wife insists it's the best tikka masala she's ever had. I agree that it was top-notch, as was everything else we had. And the service there is fantastically surly.

My son admits to being bitten in the ass by mixing up the concepts several times when hungover on a saturday morning. He sees the breakfast on the menu, it comes with beans, and he thinks "great, I could use that." And it shows up with shitty baked beans, not refrieds. And every time, he thinks to himself "goddammit, when you read 'beans' here it does NOT mean good beans."

GOLL had a great idea for fixing the full English by subbing in refrieds, and you could then call it a Full Ingles.

My last full English breakfast was at Heathrow at a pub along with two double gin and tonics. I had a lovely nap while returning to the States.

The breakfast at that Fuller's pub in Heathrow is pretty damn solid.

I first questioned my marriage to my starter wife when we went to a Fuller's pub near the Tower of London and she asked if they had Bass Pale Ale. The whole place, which was packed with finance bros, just went silent.

That's a newer pub but it has some of the best meat pies and fish and chips around.

I love that a pub which opened circa WW1 is "newer". We also went to The Turf Tavern in Oxford, which was ~ 600 years old, so I guess 100 years qualifies as "newer".

Ha. I remember walking up to it the first time and seeing a 1900s date and thinking "who is this johnny come lately".

Oliver is such a tool most of the time. Although his admonition to par boil potatos as far as you dare before roasting them works like a charm. It's the English equivalent of a Cajun urging you to push your roux darker.

The Australians will occasionally include canned spaghetti with a full breakfast, which if you eat it with Vegemite toast gets this umami-savoryu-sweet thing going on with runny eggs. I assume that's the key to the beans with a full English, the addition of Marmite, but I find Marmite to be foul, and I almost always order a Full Scottish if it's an option. Otherwise I skip the full English.

I will bag on English cuisine a lot, but candidly, one of the best meals of my life, bar none, was at St. John's in East London. Fergus Henderson can rock and roll with anyone when it comes to food.

Marmite is definitely an acquired taste. I used to hate it, but had some over buttered toast, and it was the best thing ever. Granted we were camping and we were starving after a long hike.

I have a jar of Marmite in my cupboard and still spread it on toast from time to time. I've also added a large dallop in beef stew and it gave it a good umami kick.

Yup. I prefer Vegemite. Most people lump them together, but they have distinctly different flavor profiles. I can't stand Marmite, but I have a smear of Vegemite on Buttered toast with eggs 2-3 days a week.
