Burnt Ends Bullpen NIL Pivot

Y'all remember, back in 2021, that whole thing we did together when we made the first-ever fully crowdsourced NIL deal, right here on this message board? Then remember when a bunch of us decided to fuck around and make the first-ever 501c3 IRS-approved charitable NIL collective, which became the basis for the largest NIL collective in the nation? Remember when people said that 10k for every TE was "wrong and illegal and inherently bad"? Remember when Darren Rovell journolistically dragged me around by my nutsack with a claw hammer, like Jon Hamm hazing a pledge, because I DARED give Kelvin Banks and the rest of the linemen $50,000 each to visit fucking children's hospitals and flip pancakes? Just a bunch of chucklefucks on the internet with a couple spare nickels to rub together for the sole purpose of making a meaningful impact for Texas football with nothing to gain but a different color username and the tiniest percentage chance of actually receiving a Burnt Ends cup.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh....The good ol days...well sorry to tell you Surlyites, that shit is done, finito, caput, NIL for football has moved so far past any single one of us and to a level of financial enormity that none of us will ever reach in our lifetimes. I see the checks we wrote

rick_checks.jpg.60d28e14f8099802d6d981c2076f4ab3.jpg

and as a One Fund board member, I see the checks we are writing now...

We, as a collective, can no longer make a meaningful impact in football. Systems broken, football is turbofucked and there is no putting the toothpaste back in the tube. Take solace in the fact that although things are broken, at least they are broken in favor of your team this time and things are in much much much more capable hands than any of ours...Texas football is set moving forward

BUT...

That doesn't mean we can't still impact the University of Texas athletics in a meaningful way! Football and basketball get rev share cash, but let me tell you about a sport that doesn't receive shit in NIL, let me tell you about a sport that receives zero rev share, let me tell you about a sport where

LFG! I want all the merch. Getting to Austin during baseball season for a tailgate is hard for me, but I will try! Go Horns!

Think about Gunnar for a minute, to keep this Burnt Ends related. In his short time here things changed from $10k being meaningful for the TE group, to the point where $10k became a rounding error.

Of course he's not the only one to witness the NIL changes firsthand, but in terms of burnt ends. Things have changed in a more impactful way in the last 4 years than the last 40.

Well they made on average 16-18k cuz of some of the stuff going on with players leaving and the program size being huge for a while. He got nearly 75k through his whole time here.

Sure, but even then my point still stands. Things changed significantly during his time here, and looking back at all the work you, RG, and everyone else put in to make it happen. It’s truly an amazing story all around.

Love the pivot. Thank you for putting in the energy and thoughtfulness to keep this relevant, and making an impact for these young athletes.

Yeah, love it or hate it, a hell of an effort by you guys to do something never done before and create a model for the rest of the nation.

I may ultimately be on the kind of hate it side, but that doesn't take away from your efforts and successes.

So, bravo and hat tip to you guys.

Also kinda gruntled that you're now aiming your efforts at a somewhat neglected corner of Longhorn sportsdom and one of my long time favorites.

Also, fuck Mariucci.

Contracts are out and have a media push tomorrow. Share and tell your friends!

I appreciate all the kind words and thanks! It is a wild story and at some point I will type out the whole ass story, if people think its worth the read. Super excited for this pivot and think it is going to make a massive difference for the program!

Intriguing. Seriously considering.

Texas baseball was the sport that really captured my heart as a young one. Early days of ESPN and the college World Series, looser bracket do or die games, televised. Texas making deep runs every year back in those days. Spike, Billy bates, man the imagination Texas baseball sparked kept me going in some shitty times growing up.

Honestly football was already too corporate when NIL came around for me to care. Texas Baseball is different.

Plus fuck that Marucci guy.

It’s worth it in and of itself. But it’s even more worth comparing the inception to a potential capped market model with actual rules and regulations, if that ever comes. Y’all were the pioneers. Should almost be a business case.

What a great repurposing of the collective. Thank you all so much for putting in the work to make this happen.

That they think it isn't for profit.

Not "commercial terms"?

If they're doing it equally across the board, I guess that's ok.

They said there isn't a profit motive

The Clark Field Collective pays players in order to interview them on 3rd and Longhorn, right? And they are not selling anything for profit (maybe I guess you could argue profit from YouTube views?)

Can this be something similar? No we are not asking them to endorse a product for our profit, but we are asking to pay them for their time (batting practice, team dinner?, board/podcast interviews, etc.).

It was stupid. It's obviously profitable.

I've got meetings monday with compliance. The end result is likely we just need to take profit on the subscriptions which is the dumbest thing ever.

Take some and put it into this site’s costs. Not unreasonable or stupid at all.

Exactly. The fact that folks generally don’t chip in here is fucking ridiculous. I’m double tree fiddy and think it’s a steal of a value. I got no issues with burnt ends being a program to support the players and to a lesser extent help pay for you* fools’ playground.

*the collective you not you, you.

Wait, the collective needs to take a profit?

Bizarro.

On the one hand, I get it, an ideal commercial NIL deal would involve an entity with marketing interests, say Nike or a car dealership, and would pay a sum in return for the subject's promotion of their products, which has value. The nasty question might be whether that value is commensurate with the compensation. That is, does the entity pay comparable sums for other, more conventional marketing efforts?

Doesn't the collective sort of act as a middleman for other entities? That is, paying players who are in turn connected with entities with marketing interests who contribute to the collective, along with other entities and persons who may not have marketing interests but also contribute? Or am I misunderstanding collectives?

Its stupid, they don't like that the more money it makes the more it pays.

Its actual NIL and they don't understand.

Can we discuss if there is a general target amount for players and what that impact looks like in baseball vs football? Obviously sounds like baseball gets nada currently - is the plan to spread it around evenly or will some have more value than others?

I'm open to anything honestly.

The current plan is to spread it evenly to all the pitchers

Someone wanna lead the lawsuit?

We want to be clear, however, that if the information suggested in this article is accurate, that would change our analysis.

For example, if the deals are funded by a campaign or program to raise money for NIL deals, those deals will be rejected. It is impermissible to crowdsource a fundraising event to pay student-athletes NIL money.

They are rejecting the deal even after modifying it for profit motive on something we can't get around.

#46

Is it still crowd sourcing NIL money if you charge for some higher level of board access called burnt ends, and separate and apart from that the company that owns surly contracts players for NIL?

Yes, because the whole program is an NIL program. It basically has to be raw subscription revenue and paying NIL to get more subscribers. But honestly that makes no sense because I don't think the baseball team promoting surly treefiddy equivalent moves the needle for anyone. The whole thing is stupid.
