tell me about heroin

I'm not a drug guy. I drink too much, both booze and coffee, but other drugs aren't my thing. I don't have desire for them, and I've never been around them. I smoked pot in 1981 and hated it. It's legal where I live, and here are several weed stores close by, but it's not my cup of tea.

Anyway, according to movies and TV, heroin is heated , in a spoon, with a lighter. It somehow melts and is then sucked into a syringe and injected into the body.

Wouldn't that burn like a mofo? How exactly does that work?

I've seen crack cocaine done that way too. From what I gather (and I was just watching, not actively participating) you are heating the spoon in order to melt the drug into a liquid out of the physical form, which is made up of a majority of a benign chemical. In the crack rock's case, famously baking soda, I believe.

Then when that drug is in liquid form, it can be put in a syringe to be administered IV, which is a stronger, faster, punchier high than orally waiting for it to disolve or snorting it past the blood barrier membrane.

What is interesting is if you've ever had a medical IV like with saline or something, you can almost immediately "taste" it when it hits the veins. That's how fast it gets to your brain. Now imagine that with an opiod.

All that to say, that is where the intense danger is versus the smoking crack or smoking meth. You are overpowering your nervous system super fast and intense-like with something that could be cut or laced or poor quality.

Take all that with a grain of salt, the only thing I ever shot was my thigh with a Humira shot for arthritis because I'm old and I couldn't barely stand doing that to myself.

Can't be sure, but I don't think they deliberately shoot it "hot."

It's a small volume of liquid and would cool pretty fast, at least to a level nearer body temp.

Injecting any drug is a pretty serious bridge to cross.

But, it would re-solidify if what’s out there is pure (343 to 445F melt/freeze point per google depending on form). Is it dissolved into something?

I see his point. Nobody is injecting 400 F liquid.

From the information I have come across in my smoking cessation courses (as an 8nterventionist), nicotine hits the brain 2nd fastest with chocolate #1.

That said, my diabetes will show that sweets are MY "chocolate".

I believe it is mixed with water.

Yep. Put the powder in a spoon then add water. Cook it up, then use a cotton ball to filter out any solids as you pull it into the syringe. Meth, coke, opium, etc can be taken that way as well.

I never shot it up, but I have seen people do it. I occasionally snorted it or put the powder in the tip of a cigarette to smoke it. Its fucking amazing, and Im glad I got away from that crowd before I could become a junkie. They would try to pressure me into slamming it because I wasted so much otherwise according to them.

Stick to hookers and blow.

I imagine this must be true. I lost a good friend to junk. She got on it while she was at UT and never truly shook it. That, in addition to a lot of other bad decisions she made led, if indirectly, to her early death last year.

I had freaking benedryl adminstered via IV and it felt like the wildest craziest high I've ever had. I can't even imagine a real drug pumped straight into the veins. Lord have mercy!

In high school, I had my wisdom teeth out and they were "impacted," so it was fairly major surgery.

I don't actually remember much pain from it, but in an abundance of caution, the first night I took a dose of percodan (or Percocet). I remember waking up in quite a euphoric haze and thinking this was dangerous shit. And I tend to believe and there's some scientific support for the idea that when you are actually in pain, opioids don't produce the euphoria that's a component in addiction, except maybe in the addict brain.

I was on my way to alcoholism and I think a part of me knew that. I stayed away from other drugs, based in no small part on that experience.

Who was the guy on the old site who posted something similar several years back about cocaine (maybe it was weed)? I feel like he had a Sammy Hagar avatar.

Was in the hospital overnight once to get a badly-blocked gall bladder out. They gave me intravenous fent or something. It didn't feel good. Didn't even make the pain go away. All it did was make me not CARE about the pain.

Then I got home safe and pain-free. Spend 36 hours wondering what fent felt like when you weren't in pain. Like REALLY wondering. Super scary stuff do not recommend.

When my wife was in for gall-bladder stuff, they said the best for that kind of pain is keterolac/toradol. And her experience confirmed.

But, it's an NSAID and causes bleeding, so if you're scheduled for surgery you get opioids instead.

i’d guess the same thing. large surface area. cools on the way to the syringe.

read and heard descriptions of the experience from ex addicts and such. they all describe it as an instant sensation of soothing calmness like being in a warm bath or covered under a smug blanket.

i can imagine how that becomes addicting to people. (ill stick to scotch and shitposting, thanks).

my wife had a massive surgery-- alternated between fent and morphine and she said the fent did absolutely nothing but the morphine was awesome.

I asked the nurse about that, with the reputation of fent being what it is, and she said it's a common misconception. the hospital grade, medical fent is trash compared to morphine and other pain meds and the street stuff is so different it might as well be a different named drug.

This is incorrect. Morphine is an old, dirty drug. Side effects are very common. Fentanyl is cleaner, it's just that amounts given in hospitals are small enough (in micrograms) that you don't get killed.

Everyone has their own personal experience, but generally dilaudid works the best at getting patients to STFU.

#30

Fentanyl is 100x stronger than morphine. I’ve maxed out my morphine on more than a couple occasions and still had a patient screaming bloody murder. Never in 14 years exhausted my supply of fentanyl, never.

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic and might be better than both. I love that shit.

Hydromorphone has pretty much been phased out except for in some rural areas. 1mg of Dilaudid typically does nothing, so you give the second mg and all of a sudden your scrambling for a bvm and some narcan because your patient went unresponsive/apneic.

#31

I know it’s nothing compared to heroin but I had an IV of versed before surgery a few years ago and that’s the best I’ve EVER felt. I could easily get addicted to that shit if I had regular access to it.

I only personally knew one person who had tried heroin. He said it felt like the 10 seconds right after you cum, but for a long time.

One of my older cousins had a big drug phase when I was younger, she told me only tried heroin once and it was the greatest thing she had ever felt and it scared the shit out of her and never did it again. A decade or so later she got really bad on meth though but I attribute some of that to her fucked up ex husband.

Give me weed and the occasional shroom night and acid trip. Love that shit

So what happens if you only give an extra 1/2 mg?

Don't ask me to do math. I deal in whole numbers. And whoever decided on weight based dosages, then decided to do it off of kilograms; there’s a special place in hell for you and I hope you get a hemorrhoid.

The versed/Fentanyl cocktail is so much fun I actually look forward to getting my pacemaker changed out every 10 years.

I am so grateful to be a garden variety recovered alcoholic, I’d have been 100% dead if opiates were my drug of choice. Luckily single malt was readily available and did the trick.

The famous quote about Heroin “ being petted by God” or “like kissing God” is terrifying.

I never used or bought heroin but I took my brother's girlfriend to get heroin in Austin, 50th-something street? Across the street from an Armenian restaurant.

The deal was that she would get one last dose then I'd drive her to my Dad's place way off in the caliche hills west of San Antonio, where she would ride it out.

My brother would have done it but he was in Polunsky Unit.

So anyway, we're driving south of Austin that night and she is, best case, passed out. I'm all "OK, drivin down I-35 with a dead chick in the car, cool."

Eventually we get to Dad's semi-biker compound and she locks herself up in a bedroom. Comes out after 3 days and says "Can we get a pizza?"

I remember you sharing your brother was executed by the state of Alabama for his various crimes, so I 100% believe this story.

I've been second-hand to two different opiate detox episodes and can't imagine being the primary caregiver on one.

It was Texas. I doubt he ever spent more than a weekend in Alabama. We grew up in different places with different moms.

Yeah, heroin detox is un-fun. She was still itchin to go get more, but I wouldn't take her to do it. Asked her why she had started, she told me a doctor had told her she was headed for kidney failure so why not help it along. I blew up and told her doctors were wrong about shit all the time, hell she might outlive that doctor if she even halfway tried.

I don't know if she ever completely believed me, but she did start living. Last 15 years I've watched her looking healthier of FB, has a teenage daughter now and they seem to be doing OK.

Has there ever been a better use; the delivery; of the word “caliche” than in No Country for Old Men? That guy talking about Uncle Max was a globe actor the way he brought those words to life. Not for your want of trying of course, but that’s the second thing I thought of when I read your post. Rest in Peace to your late brother, regardless.

He actually did a lot of good for several people once they locked him up and he was forced to grow up.
