What a career. Great in everything. Probably my favorite actor . He was an absolute treasure to watch. Played my favorite character ever, Gus Mccrae. Thanks for the memories.

Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

Gus McCrae was the greatest character in American culture. Robert Duval made him real. RIP

Was about to post this same thing. My favorite literary character of all time. Almost nobody else would have been able to get Gus right, but Duvall absolutely nailed it.

what a legend. stood next to him at a billy joe shaver show at antone's 20ish years ago. he was super nice to everyone who approached him.

So so so fucking good. Universally excellent in everything he did, and despite his roles being quite varied (Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Colors, Lonesome Dove) he was always his iconic self.

RIP to a legend. Check out The Apostle if you missed it, one of his lesser known films and really great.

RIP Boss

Was just watching this the other day. Although I think Gus McCrae was probably his greatest character, Boss Spearman had a lot of Gus in him.

RIP to an absolute titan in the industry. Godspeed, Mr. Duvall.

Yes, exactly.

I was just telling my buddy "Larry McMurtry created Gus McCrae, but Duvall brought him to life".

While Duvall and Hoffman were young actors living together in New York, they were on the prowl for more than just work. “We were obsessed with sex,” Duvall told Vanity Fair.

He later said that Hoffman was much more successful in that department, and “got more women than anybody…More than Joe Namath.”

“I was just the worst,” Duvall told Esquire in 2014. “My pickup lines, they were terrible. I’d see some Puerto Rican girls out in the street, and I’d run up to them, say something like, ‘Why don’t you come up to our apartment? We got some nice new linoleum on the floor.’”

This sucks. Naming my favorite of all his legendary performanes would be impossible. "Tender Mercies" is way up there, though. RIP Mr. Duvall.

Agreed on the Apostle. Legitimately great movie and he nails being an Pentacostal preacher.

Helluva IMDB page all around.

In the library on Texas State's campus, exists the Southwest Collection. One of it main exhibits has to do with Lonesome Dove--props, wardrobe, pics, scripts, etc. One of the artifacts, is the prop that was the wrapped body of Gus, which Woodrow removed from the icehouse and carried back to Texas. It is not very big--missing a leg and all. I have seen it many times, and it always feels very real and a bit intrusive--like looking upon the mangled body of a loved one on display. That book and the subsequent movie represent the best of both genres. RIP Augustus. Hope every card cut you make in the great beyond leads to a poke.

This is one of my favorite scenes in a movie about a complicated man:

Great point. All his roles, of wildly varying characters, were unquestionably his.

But he also had the grace and humility, or whatever is that characteristics, that the characters weren't him. Some other great actors can't do that.

"Days of Thunder" is a great example of Duvall making a mediocre movie much better. It's not hyperbole to call it "Top Gun On Wheels", basically a cash grab. I respect Tom Cruise, but Duvall was just on a whole different level as an actor. He disappeared into his roles. You'd just forget it was him.

Rose Bowl 2005, I exchanged pleasantries with him in the restaurant of the Hyatt Beverly Hills. I watched him leave, with a hitch in his giddy up, and wearing an old school warm suit. I was surprised by how old he looked. He looked like he was pushing 90 twenty years ago.

He will always be Augustus McCrae.

First role that comes to mind whenever I hear his name, even with all the other iconic roles listed here.

Legend.

I have not watched The Apostle. That changes tonight.
