Sad, one of the best. He's the only person who could've played Jackson Fentry in 1972. Maybe Tom Hanks 30 years later. That's about it.

it's happening 💔

we're gonna lose more absolute legends this year, they're all so old.

my dad looks so much like him that he's actually been mistaken for him a couple times. this one actually made me cry 😢

My high school girlfriend was having dinner with her super-milfy mom in downtown Austin (Sullivan's maybe?) in the mid-90s... Right after they sat down, Duvall pulled up a chair and asked if he could join them. So they sat there for two hours having dinner with Robert Duvall.

Rubbin's racin'. RIP

Goddamn fuck this day. I’ll be in my cave watching Lonesome Dove and drinking rye whiskey poured by a surly bartender.

“To the sunny slopes, of long ago!”

I mean, he WAS 95, so this was comin' sooner rather than later. But yep....still sucks. A genuine legend. The world is poorer without him in it. Can't think of anything I saw him in where he wasn't great. Shit, I loves Secondhand Lions in large part because of his performance.

my 7th grade Texas History teacher was the best teacher i’ve ever had, and he introduced his 7th graders to Lonesome Dove every year. we did an entire unit on it. the overarching theme of his class was treating us all like adults (he referred to us as mr. or mrs.last name for example), and the Lonesome Dove unit was a part of that. this scene always stuck out in my mind as part of that process, as my 12 year old brain wasn’t ready for it, assuming that jake’s old pals wouldn’t hang him, and would understand that he just got caught up. nope. i remember having to sit with that and ponder it. that was a big deal for me. Mr.Buttrey changed my life with LD, and i am forever grateful for it.

That is a cool story, bro.

I feel like Lonesome Dove played a part in shaping my morals as a teenager. I've read the book 3 times, but it's been a long while since the last time. Time to pick it up again.

A true Texas treasure of a book, made better by great casting of the miniseries.

I read the book in one sitting. Started it in the evening, put it down 11 hours later, exactly as the first morning bell chime of the Tower was ringing, my sophomore year of college.

I read passages of it to my wife's uncle, a true Texan through-and-through, on his deathbed in his last couple of days.

Passages, man. Life is just one after another. Duvall's passing is one of those for a shitload of us.

The Judge with him and Robert Downey Jr. was some of his really good late work and they both do great acting jobs. RIP.

"Well, see, there’s this old bull and a young bull standing on a hill. The young bull says, 'Let’s run down and fuck one of them cows.' The old bull says, 'No, let’s walk down and fuck ’em all'"

One of my all time favorites, too many great movies to list but I'll throw this one in because what it meant to me at the time.

Just an absurdly prolific career. Like Hackman you'd be hard pressed to find a performance that wasn't excellent. A movie maybe, but not his part of it.

Not challenging you, but if he was in a bad film I am honestly unaware of its existence. Seriously, I just scrolled his history... there are a few I have not seen... none I recall being bad. Not looking to fight about it either.

Yep. I have one.

At the ranch we've never had TV's. Too remote and I've never wanted to mess with dishes or anything else. What we do have in an ancient TV/VCR combo that has had Lonesome Dove on loop for decades now. It just plays, rewinds itself, starts again until you pop in another tape.

Growing up my first single action 22lr. pistola with belt & holster was my "sassy bandit" rig. This just sucks.

Questions abound, including:

(1) Did you ever bang the mom?

(2) Did Duvall bang either your girlfriend or the mom? Or both?

(3) Where are the pics of said females? They aren't loading for some reason.

while looking to find that scene....I came upon this, alternate ending to the movie

That movie is fantastic. One night 20+ years ago I woke up and couldn't fall back asleep so I went to the living room and turned on the tv.

It was 3:00a.m. or so and Seconhand Lions was just starting. I'd never heard of it so figured it'd be perfect to start watching because I wouldn't give a fuck if I fell asleep.

Turned out to be a great movie, what an awesome surprise.

Ordinarily, I would assume I'd be hard pressed to find a Surly thread in which I agree with every post. But here we are.

RIP to a legend.

Well crap, this is close to a when we lose Clint Eastwood type loss. Legend. On my short list of actors I would have loved to sit and have a casual conversation over a meal or a drink.

When I see this scene, I KNOW Duvall did those things.

I'm gonna have to watch the Oscars this year just for the Memorium.
