How the hell did this place go out of business? All you can eat chicken fried steak with all the trimmings. Damn I miss that.

#3

Hell yeah. Chicken fried steak, fried okra, Mac and cheese, and a roll with a sweet iced tea.

There was one in Capital Plaza in Austin when I was growing up. It has to have been closed for at least 15 years now, though.

Hey, their website lists locations in Victoria, El Paso and Las Cruces if that's more your speed. Or, Okahoma or some joint in Georgia.

Didn't we just discuss this on another thread somewhere? Anyway, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, fried okra, and rolls with honey slammed and went hard when I was a kid.

I remember going to Victoria for what I remember as the "Western District" soccer championship. (Yeah, that makes little sense.)

I never felt more isolated in a small city in my life. That's a weird place.

We had our senior year breakfast at Grandy's. Felt bad for the employees trying to keep up with 100+ 18 year olds pummeling their buffet,

If all the locations were known for hosting those events, it doesn't take a rocket surgeon (sic) to figure out why they went out of business.

One of the first restaurants my immigrant family would frequent as a child. Man I miss that place. What I wouldn't give for a plate of their fried chicken, rolls, and fried okra.

I love that sign. It tells travelers coming in from Louisiana headed to cali they’re going to be in Texas a long fucking time

Also there’s a Grandys off I30 heading towards mesquite in Dallas. I stay away as I’m trying to avoid the diabeetus

There is one in Balch Springs, in Dallas. It's at the 635-I-20 split in SE Dallas. Been going there for years on my way back to East Texas. Love their dinner rolls.

Too bad they're dying out, the CFS special and their chicken are both fantastic.

#24

There was one in north OKC until somewhat recently. Never thought to go even though I remember it being good as a kid. If its still there might got some CFS next time I'm in town.

There was one in Decatur for a while and one in Rhome. For some reason the one in Rhome stayed open years after all the others closed. Damn good fried okra.

So is CFS a “real” steak?

I ask cause a few months ago I got togo at a DQ and ordered steak fingers. Of course I wasn’t surprised when it was a pressed meat thing.

It’s top sirloin they beat the shit out of to flatten and tenderize ir. Some of the nicer joints, not Grandy’s or DQ; will use ribeye.

My dad worked for Sysco back in the day and was a great cook. He’d take top sirloin, cut it up, hit it with the meat tenderizer hammer, batter it, and fry it. Hard to beat. Maybe 3-4 places can make it better.

While he had the grease out he’d make potato chips or fries from scratch. Great stuff.

I won’t order the steak fingers at Dinner anymore. Haven’t been good since, shit, I dunno maybe 10-15 years ago in Elgin. Chicken tenders are much safer.

What the fuck were you expecting from DQ? Ribeye?

A hand job at least

grandy's double cfs, double mash, extra gravy, extra roll, side of okra, two jalapeños, large unsweet >>> a hand from @Shaddie 's mom

The old Grandys on Gessner back in the day had a badass playground. The play structures would get blisteringly hot in the sweet summer sun of Houston.

Good times.

Man. I kinda miss my youth, when my culinary choices could be "10 pounds of fried goodness, please," and I didn't have to give any fucks. I was burning it off, I was immortal. If you served that meal to me today, I could eat maybe 1/3 of it and then I'd be in a coma.

Last Grandy's I went to was 25 years ago. I met and interviewed a witness at a location right off the interstate in Denton. We both had CFS and teas, I got some good info, then headed on to Abilene to meet with more witnesses.

I think it was a hornfans tailgate...somebody mentioned Victoria. I said "I've got a cousin that lives there".

Guy asks "is he a total fucking redneck?" I affirm. Guy says "that checks out".
