How to pick a college in Texas....

Must be done by a UT grad.

Because apparently under no circumstances should you choose to go to A&M

I told my kids their is no pressure for them to go to UT, but I will not pay for aggy or rapelor.

Got me at "Are you a snob? Yes - SMU"

Surprising that they didn't use Brisketexan's rigorous college selection standards from back in the day: (1) When visiting, did you see a bunch of gals who blew your mind with how gorgeous they were? (2) Were you easily able to find shindigs with folks drinking beer and having a good time? (3) Do they have a big football stadium and party on game day?

Those were pretty important criteria to the deep, long-term thinker that I was at age 17-18.

And how does "No" to the question "are you a snob" end you up at TCU.

And where are the little, smart Presby schools: Trinity, Southwestern, and AC?

Went to a Sig Ep party at UT the summer before my senior year. I was sold.

Damn the did your parents go to Baylor hit me right in the mirror, though I am a snob.

I've told the story many times, but when it came time to pick a college dad said, "If you go to Baylor we'll pay for it, if you go to UT you'll have to pay your own way, and if you go to A&M you'll have to pay us back for raising you."

Shit, this is a major reason I went to UT being out of State. A gorgeous day walking around campus, hanging out in the West Mall, checking out the honeys around the six pack.

And though I really wanted access to the Benson library, #1-3 were the deciding factors.

I can't imagine such a scenario where the only choices a kid might have is ou or aggy. If a kid leans aggy, have them consider OKST, ag school without the fake army jizz jar nut grabbing or the fake inflated US News rank.

Okay come on. A&M is orders of magnitudes better than OSU.

I've been classmates and co-workers with plenty of aggy and nope. Their size and financial resources give them advantages in some areas but pretending that an average aggy grad is somehow smarter or more qualified for jobs in which the programs overlap than an average OKST grad is laughable. aggy is a paper tiger in not only athletics but academics too. Again, US News is complete and utter horseshit.

Look, I hate OU and A&M. Upon a deeper review of how one can reasonably argue that OSU is even in the same universe as A&M, I see you went to OSU. Delulu checks out.

There was that time they created the maroon bluebonnet variant that threatened to take over the entire state and destroy the real bluebonnets. That was very Aggie-like.

At the rate this state is going, are you smart and rich? Rice. Can’t get into Rice? Go somewhere out of state.

Definitely belongs in the unpopular opinions thread but my youngest is a freshman there who also got into Purdue and Tennessee. Initial plan was to go to Tennessee but in the end he, his mom and I decided it wasn’t a good idea for him to be that far from home (very late bloomer, like puberty at 17). I have 2 currently at UT.

I have to say if I weren’t biased as an alum, given his experience at A&M thus far vs theirs, I would have to recommend it in terms of quality of education and student resources over UT.

I’m going to pass on increasing the odds of one of my daughters possibly dating one of those toy soldier corps turds. Let alone a dyed in the wool aggy that is all in on their weird turditions.

Unless your daughter is a dude or a sheep you've got nothing to worry about.

If your daughter is drawn to that type she will find them wherever. There are a lot of really great kids there. Like finds like

Back when I graduated HS, if you didn't get into aggy or OU, and didn't want to live in Lubbock, and were too poor for Baylor, you ended up at LSU

Yeah, with a 50% divorce rate in this country, I don’t think people are making the best decisions about who they think is right for them. As a father, I’m trying to play the odds. Frankly, I hope neither of them marries a Christian either.

I know there are good kids there. But that diploma is worth just as much/little as any state school frankly. This comes from someone that reviews and interviews folks for O&G work. Hell, I just gave the green light to hire someone that had a degree from an online college based on her work experience and her ability to not be a totally awkward weirdo in the interview as well as showing confidence and knowledge of the job requirements.

Arkansas for sure. My oldest nephew is about to finish up at Arkansas with a finance degree and has a job lined up. Didn’t get into UT and decided not to do the UTSA/UTA transfer in method. Several of his friends were going to be at Arkansas. He got a scholarship to offset the out of state tuition.

Does anyone know if UNM gives out money these days to Texans? I remember they were pretty giving to my average ass in the 00s along with Bama and Southern Miss.

From your posts you seem like a great person and are someone your daughters look up to. I’m sure you have modeled the right type of man for them, and that’s what they will look for wherever they wind up.

Agreed that where you go (unless you want to be in investment banking or the federal govt) is irrelevant; your level of effort/mastery means more in terms of eventual success than where the piece of paper is from. We had 8 4.0s in my med school class and 2 were from Tech. There was a guy from Yale undergrad who I wouldn’t let dog sit for me much less trust with a medical problem

Thanks. But I hope they do better than me. I do the best I can but I am an extremely flawed man. I obviously saying some of these things in jest as I of course work with Aggies that are capable and not cultists.

Just yesterday I was having a discussion with the project director and he outed himself as anti-vax. He went to another SEC school. I wasn’t surprised but a bit disappointed. It’s everywhere. One of the shittiest and dumbest Longhorns ever is running this state presently.

My friends daughter was offered 30k by LSU plus a full ride. Top of her class and had a full ride to UT, but she wanted to GTFO out of Texas and the south in general so she went to Colorado.

My younger son likely will get into UT, but whether he gets the major he wants (currently either Biology or Engineering) is not a guarantee. We asked him about aggy and tech and he just smiled and shook his head. So Arky might be on his visit list since they give in-state tuition for Texas HS grads. He's laser-focused on UT though and his older brother is finishing up his sophomore year there. So fingers crossed.

Hard pass on rivals (A&M OU and Arky), Baylor and tech. Danny DeVito no way. Even if the schools are fine we aren’t having rivalries in this family along those lines or allegiance to shit schools. Pac-12 schools is where it’s at. Parallel allegiances are fine.

There are practicing physicians that are anti-VAX. Presumably, these people passed the modules on how the immune system works and passed their medical and specialty boards. Just mind bottling.

Arkansas is a beautiful campus. My son I mentioned above got the auto admit with in-state tuition, but it is kind of like 13th grade for his high school. He had several friends going, but they weren’t really the kind of people he saw as doing something with their lives and he felt like they would be more of a bad influence than support system. I was a little bit shocked that he had that much maturity about the situation as I most definitely would not have at his age.

He could’ve gone to UT liberal arts, but he wants to do business and to be honest he’s been going to Austin in general and to campus periodically since he was in elementary school and it’s just not his scene

Yes. They give Texas high school grads in state tuition with a 3.0 GPA. We toured their engineering department and liked it a lot. The undergrad recruiter made some good points I hadn't thought of. He said that small population states need to have a comprehensive university with 100+ majors but they don't have enough local kids graduating each year to support it. So, they have to throw money at out of state kids so they can offer all the majors that will help keep kids in state after graduation.

My dad was a very straight-laced, no bullshit engineering prof. Presbyterian. Sit up straight, keep your mouth shut. (Some of those lessons didn't stick.)

I wanted to transfer to a bigger university sophomore year, so we visited UT during the spring semester of my freshman year. Neither of us had ever been to Texas, much less Austin or UT. We parked the car near Dobie Mall, walked up to the South Mall, and found ourselves surrounded by what seemed like hundreds of sunbathing sirens, just an incredible display of distaff beauty. I had never heard my dad reference anything like this before, and never did again, but he stopped me, looked me in the eye, and said "son, if you don't transfer here I'm taking you to a psychiatrist". I transferred to UT.
