I only want Stink if we can get Wee-Bay and Little Man too

Gerry this morning:

"What I continue to feel good about:

Matas returning

Where I also come out:

Think it's over 50-50 Cam Heide returns ... as of today. Quality role player, would be good as experienced CBK player with Bo Ogden playing a 14-18 minute per game role behind him in year one.

I feel good about John Clark returning. He has SEC physicality and rebounding ability off the bench, with the opportunity to keep developing as an offensive player long term."

if bo ogden is getting codie-wilcher level minutes next season we are not going to the tourney. this is a kid who can’t defend against dallas area HS players but next year he’s going to play 35-40% of each game against rashaun agee’s 26 year old ass? nope. ogden is at least one full year of practicing and weight training away from being ready to play and not be a total liability.

history also says that his one known asset- shooting- will not translate year one. i don’t know if this is all propaganda to make chris and bo ogden feel warm and fuzzy, but deadass, if Bo Ogden is playing 14-18 minutes (making him the second or third guy off the bench) next year then the sean miller thread title is going to change again, and not in no nice way.

can’t go on a season-saving tourney run if we don’t make the tourney.

Kind of a ludicrous thing to say given that we're pretty much where most people assumed we'd be post-attrition pre-Portal, give or a take a Euro we haven't seen play?

“we’re where most people assumed we would be.” what does that mean? because where we are is bleak. we have exactly one SEC caliber player expected to return as of right now. we barely made the tourney this year, and now we’re essentially starting from scratch, save Vok. explain to me how it’s “ludicrous” to say that next year’s roster doesn’t need an unprecedented influx of talent brought in and money spent in order to field a tourney team.

this is reminding me of when TexasStrong12, er RickyLovesWeed, er avidhornslurker swore up and down indefatigably that it was impossible to project how good our bad our 2017 team would be because we hadn’t seen them play together yet. how did that work out?

every time i say something completely reasonable that isn’t what you people want to hear (shaka, ehlinger, ewers, the 2017 team, jarrett allen, ted lasso, GoT, and on and on and on) you guys spazz out because you can’t handle hearing something negative about the thing that you like.

grow up. be objective. really good teams aren’t built from scratch in one offseason, and we have unprecedented work to do if we want to fill out a competitive SEC roster. stop acting like a child with a skinned knee and make an adult argument if you disagree with what i’ve said.

you mean the guy who two weeks ago was sweating the weakest bubble ever after completely shitting the bed down the stretch with the worst defense since penders was here? the guy who was a tramon mark mid range clinic from losing to NC State to cap off what would have been a D-, possibly an F graded season? yeah i stand by everything ive said in that thread.

you’re too uneducated and cowardly to ever get into any sort of real discussion here, opting instead for one and two sentence posts, usually talking shit. pretty fucking easy to post here for 20 years, never engage in any real discussion, and just sit back and talk a bunch of shit after the fact like a 13 year old, which to be clear is all you do. if you’re going to be critical of posters who actually go out on limbs and give their own informed options, you should stop being a shit talking pussy and join the discussion.

you called my position ludicrous; i responded defending my position; then you essentially said by proxy, “i’m not going to do this with you because you’re a crazy person.”

do you know how insulting that is? i also did not make any personal attack, so what exactly is it that you aren’t going to do with me? defend your position? have an adult discussion?

you essentially called me a crazy person because i disagreed with you. that’s shitty. nobody attacked you, nobody insulted you, i simply disagreed with you, and you chose to go for the low hanging fruit and say, “i’m not going to to do this with you” to the one guy who everyone here knows is mentally ill. it’s a cop out, and it’s wildly insulting. no crazy person bi polar shit happened here, i simply disagreed with you. don’t be shitty towards me and then point the finger at me for it. that’s low.

ok good talk this afternoon. to recap:

•texifornia made a basketball related post, i disagreed, and then he backed out of the discussion because i was being crazy, combative, and unreasonable (right?).

•js1 came in with his usual 1-2 line shit talking posts towards me and then was like, “oh fuck derka, jesus, here we go again, im not gonna do this with you.”…aftwr coming here specifically to do this with me.

then both of them claimed that we can’t have this discussion because i’m unreasonable, crazy, hostile, combative, etc.

all i know is that it’s truly fascinating to me that these people will behave this way and then walk away saying, “man that derka just can’t help himself, he’s crazy.” right. i was the one who made things personal and combative. L. O. L.

There isn't really anything to argue about. Of course where we are right now is nowhere near competitive. We'll have to see how the portal plays out. What else could there possibly be to discuss?

when i say that Texas will have to do some unprecedented shit in terms of quality of signings and money spent in order to turn our current roster (Vok (we think), Heide (maybe), and Goosby being 3/5 of our starting 5),into a competitive SEC team i’m not just talking shit because of how much i love to make you guys angry (🙄) im saying it because its simply my always-well-informed and honest opinion.

we don’t have a history of signing all league, all american, real deal game changing players. the best class we’ve ever signed was beard’s 2021 class, and we will need to replicate that class if we want to be competitive in the sec next year. right now Vok and possibly Goosby are SEC level players. that’s just the facts. we are going to have to hit on 5-7 portal signings and drop a lot of cash to do it. i also imagine that Vok can demand a pretty penny for himself considering all of the leverage he has.

we will have to spend lots of money and have a very high success rate on our signings in order for the upcoming team to be a competitive sec/ncaa tourney team. that’s just the facts. if you think that’s ludicrous then i disagree and i welcome you to explain why you feel the way you do. i’ve explained why i feel the way that i do.

you guys keep framing this as if what you’re saying is reasonable, and i’m here to tell you that it’s not. this angle you guys are pushing- that we won’t be able to know anything about our team until the portal transfers are all in, and this insinuation that every single other team is also building from scratch, is not accurate.

we’ve seen this throughout the tournament re: “where did every S16 team’s starting five start their careers” type graphics. the best teams, the highest seeds, the teams still playing? they all had 3, 4, or even 5 guys whom they’d recruited and developed, supplemented by a few key transfers. the lesser teams had less continuity than the better teams. the lowest rated team? that was us. we had five starters from five different schools. that’s not ideal. and yet it’s almost certainly going to be the case again next year.

you want and need to have your starting five be full of guys you recruited and developed, the numbers show this to be empirically true. Starting your roster over essentially from scratch in the off-season is not what the successful teams do. we did it last year, we struggled, and we were the third to last team let into the tournament. and now we’re going to do it again. it’s not a recipe for success. the data says that this idea that, “hey we’ll let the portal play out and we might just have some great team” is a pipe dream. really good teams don’t get assembled over one offseason. they just don’t.

World's tallest basketball player, 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux, is transferring from Florida

Story by MARK LONG

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The world's tallest college basketball player is on the move.

Florida's Olivier Rioux, a 7-foot-9 center from Canada and the most popular athlete on campus, announced Tuesday he is entering the transfer portal. The portal officially opens April 7.

Rioux played sparingly in two years with the Gators, redshirting as a true freshman during the team's national championship season and then getting on the court in mop-up duty this past season. He played 15 total minutes, finishing with seven points, six rebounds and an assist.

He set a Guinness World Record as the world's tallest teen before he stepped foot on campus. Now 20, he's looking for a chance to play more as a third-year sophomore.

“After taking time to reflect on my journey and what's best for my future, I've decided to enter the transfer portal,” Rioux wrote in an Instagram post.

Rioux became the tallest person to ever play college basketball when he made his debut in a 104-64 victory over North Florida last November. He scored three games later, making a free throw after getting fouled. He also recorded his first rebound.

NCAA Prairie View A M Florida Basketball

Rioux is 2 inches (5 centimeters) taller than former NBA giants Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol, and 3 inches taller than popular big men Yao Ming, Tacko Fall and Shawn Bradley. He already owned a spot in the Guinness record book when he signed with Florida in 2024.

Golden gave Rioux the option of playing sparingly as a true freshman or taking a redshirt season and working on his game. Rioux chose the latter. Nonetheless, he was a walking viral video, from riding his custom-made bike on campus, to ducking under every doorway, to cutting down nets while standing flat-footed during Florida’s NCAA Tournament run.

The good news is we will know what we have in about 3 weeks or so. I think it was known since the start of the season we'd be starting over somewhat with Vok, Heide, Codie or Duru and the freshmen if Swain played his way into the draft. Duru departing would be kind of a loss just because he's a big body. I'm not concerned with replacing Wilcher's stats/game with a portal add. nothing about him screams irreplaceable.

Miller showed us his high floor, up to him to maintain it.

it’s almost like it’s miller’s job to not have to rebuild the roster from scratch every single year. we have one returning player who is SEC quality. that’s not a strong foundation on which to build a contending team. what happens if we miss the tourney next year, a totally reasonable question based on the complete rebuild we have before us. more smarmy comments about how two years isn’t enough time to turn around a program? tell that to dusty may, tommy lloyd, todd golden, tj otzelberger, mark byington, nate oats, rick pitino, ryan odom, john calipari, pat kelsey, grant mccasland, ben mccollum………..

this routine where people get upset at negative prognostications which are based on reality, so they come in here with these smarmy, unhelpful, 1-2 line posts that add nothing substantive to the discussion is defintely my favorite part of every offseason.

One thing I wish is for Miller to visit with Dan Hurley. We all saw the effect Hurley can have on a game. The refs were doing the usual, when in doubt, favor Duke on the calls in the first half. But then halftime came, and Hurley said some magic words to the refs and they completely changed course, almost evened the playing field.

For me, it all goes back to reffing, because I remember an interview with Al McGuire, many, many years ago. I kind of pooh-poohed his reply, but have been a 100% believer for at least 10 years now. Al was asked how the USA team could perform well at the Olympics or Pan Am or whatever international contest was and he said something to the effect of "First you have to get some impartial officials."

So my wish is for someone in Austin to get video of awful calls late season against us. I would go all of the way back to the famous Strollin' Nolan game against Arkansas(1990) when the refs should have called a tech against Ark, and admitted their mistake after the game. It cost us the game.

Miller's questions should be "how would you deal with that?", etc.

There is so much material to work with, and Hurley is the master.

The Arizona 5 seconds game, the 2022 Purdue game, the Miami game, and of course the 2026 Purdue game.

I realize Dan Hurley is not likely to give away all his secrets, but I think all Texas fans would feel a lot better if Miller would at least spend a full day with Hurley, giving a good faith effort attempting to get his advice.

Wwell I don’t totally disagree, digging up tape from 1990 to whine about calls is pretty aggy. Don’t do that part

prepare for the long term. we started last offseason with weaver, pope, and mark as the foundational pieces of our team, and when everything was said and done we had a team that everyone here hated when the season ended, a team that barely eked into the tournament. we’re starting with even less this time around.

for all the excuses that people made for miller not having enough time to build last year’s roster, he’s had a full year to think about and start building this year’s roster. according to Gerry we’re starting this team with a foundation of Vok and maybe Heide. that’s not great. and it’s sean miller’s job to not have us as n a place where year two were starting from an even weaker position than we did year one.

1)sweet 16 year one

2)had to rebuild the roster year two and went 16-18

3)went 22-12 year 3, made the play-in game, then dipped out for Texas

we get to the offseason, i point out something less than ideal about the team, i get met exclusively with push back and arguing and whining, and then we get to november/december, and the thing i forewarned everyone about is hurting the team, and every single person on the forum is bitching incessantly about it. every. single. time.

april: NO NEGATIVITY AT ALL

december: RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE WHY DOES THIS TEAM SUCK UGH WHEN IS BASEBALL SEASON?!?!?

every. single. time. there has to be a name for this phenomenon where grown adults have to compulsively reject anything they don’t want to hear about their favorite sports team, no matter how obvious, or reasonable it is.

and for the the record, i have NOT said that next year’s team will suck. i’ve said that we have a lot of work to do in the portal before we have a roster that’s competitive in the SEC. i’ve said it five times, so don’t try and twist my words later. all i’ve said is that we have a full rebuild ahead of us and that the data would strongly suggest that this will not lead to a great season next year, and that miller should have been better prepared for this.

just a shockingly controversial take that definitely deserves to be met with nothing but incredulous push back. fur. sure.

arizona, sparty, purdue, isu, houston, bama, tennessee, uconn, arkie, and illinois all had at least 3/5 starters who committed to them out of HS. this is what the competitive teams look like. this is how they build their rosters. recruiting, development, key transfer adds. you don’t see teams who rebuild year on year having success in the tourney.

How would Miller have been able to get ahead of that though? He had a short window to assemble a team last year. He had to assemble what he could, and most of the contributors that remained were Seniors. It was always going to require nailing this transfer window. The only thing that would've changed that is getting those expensive instant impact incoming freshman.

you guys are right, building a competitive roster is not sean miller’s responsibility, and even if it were then it would be unfair to ask him to actually do his job, because a full year isn’t enough time for him to settle in.

Christ. Nobody is saying it isn't Sean Miller's responsiblity. Stop with the straw men arguments. Tell us what he should have done with the leftover RT personnel at the time? Should he have booted Mark and Pope? Weaver? Heide? Which of those? Who else? He didn't even know jack shit about most of those players. What do you think the odds are of getting additional portal guys that are not only superior but young enough to stick around for a couple of years?

He arrived the day the portal opened. He was already behind the 8-ball.

sign a better transfer class last year, retain more than one viable player for his second roster, recruit more than just sg/combo guards, sign a better, more well rounded class than the upcoming class where only one of the four guys stands to make an impact on next year’s team, give actual minutes to guys like dudu who should be a part of this year’s team, etc. plan ahead. shit like that.

i mean if you recruit a project at the 4 or the 5 then at least he can contribute year one with some defense and rebounding. we signed three guards, two of whom honestly need a redshirt season to build muscle and acclimate to playing against grown men. we’ve signed a four ma class where only one of them projects t contribute to next year’s team, and they all play the same spot. but i guess that’s not on sean miller, is it?
