sorry responding in kind to the deluge of ludicrous posts which 100% absolve sean miller from any responsibility for, checks notes, doing his job, in this case thinking ahead to what his second roster will look like and making sure that it’s better than the first one he had.

So you don't have any answers to my questions. Got it. And the bold part is a flat fucking lie.

Are these posts in the room with us?

Derka, all I asked you to do yesterday was wait until he has assembled his year 2 roster before you jumped down his throat for being a shitty coach and not doing his job.

It is April 1. The portal doesn't even open until next Tuesday. What would you like him to be doing right this fucking second?

Is it that he hasn't personally told you his plan?

This is 100% turning into "Sark is doing nothing to fix the OL" when the portal was still open.

Tell us what he should have done with the leftover RT personnel at the time? Should he have booted Mark and Pope? Weaver? Heide? Which of those? Who else?

what in the hell are you even talking about. this is what you’re mad at me for not answering? i literally have no clue what you’re asking here or where it’s coming from. just total nonsense. why would sean miller have kicked those guys off the team? what would that have accomplished? what makes you think that that’s something i believe he should have done?

everything you’re asking here has already been answered by posts i’ve made in this thread this morning.

also, comparing rebuilding an OL in the portal to building essentially an entire basketball roster in the portal is goddamn ridiculous.

arizona, sparty, purdue, isu, houston, bama, tennessee, uconn, arkie, and illinois all had at least 3/5 starters who committed to them out of HS.

Are in of those coaches in their first season coaching at those school besides Calipari? Calipari had a top 3 NIL bag to get two top 15 5 stars that started. All the other coaches have been at their schools for at least 4 years.

The comparison doesn’t even make sense.

do you need me to just repost every single post we’ve already had in this discussion??

you claimed that 250 other teams are als rebuilding from scratch. i said “the good ones aren’t”, and then i posted evidence of that.

that’s it. end of story. i didn’t make any comparison, i made a factual statement. so what’s the beef? what’s the issue?

You've argued that he should have built a squad with better long-term potential. That would have required losing more of the 2024-2025 guys AND finding better replacements. Assuming the latter is possible, can you exlain who he kept on but shouldn't have? Or are you just disappointed in some of his portal recruits?

“it’s not sean miller’s fault that he’s having to build his second roster almost completely from scratch. there’s nothing he could have done.”

again, i just have no words for such a completely asinine argument. i am truly incredulous that this is the prevailing sentiment. blame rodney terry i guess. just like it’s joe biden’s fault that gas prices are high right now, it’s rodney terry’s fault that sean miller’s second roster is going to have to be almost entirely built through the portal. great stuff guys. smart. no accountability at all. that’s the ticket.

this is simply not true. mark, weaver, and pope were not standing in the way of players who will be on this upcoming roster. miller could have easily used more of the players he had last year, he could have signed better portal guys who wouldn’t only be here one year, and he could have signed a better, more well rounded recruiting class with more than just one guy who projects to contribute.

all of which i have already said in this thread, multiple times. your contention that we would have had to get rid of our best returners from last year in order to have a better roster for next year is just baseless.

I didn't say that, Derka. I was trying to get you to clarify what you think Miller SHOULD have done. I would certainly hope nobody criticizes him for retaining Mark, Pope, and Weaver.

Or being surprised that, gasp, they are graduating.

I'm quite certain Miller knew this already, so disingenuously acting like he didn't know he was going to be replacing all 3 (and Swain to the NBA) just makes people look like they are trying to find fault.

And again, the portal isn't even open yet.

No, not everyone fully agrees, 100%, with your take regarding last off-season's portal period - that is a fact. What is also a fact is that continuing to argue whether or not Miller did enough last off-season is absolutely pointless, as we don't have access to the information to assess the claim either way. Also, I might point out that "doing enough" probably carries a strong positive correlation with NIL budget; which, as we all know, Texas was not super competitive with last season.

However, everyone does agree that Texas and Miller have their work cut out for them this portal period - which is not open yet.

i’m being 100% serious here: if anyone who’s responded to me did this then i missed it. what i’ve seen has been mostly drive-by, snarky posts (“vok is the whole roster!!!!”), wild hypotheticals (“oh so you think miller should have cut pope, mark, and weaver?!?!”), and excuses for sean miller having to do another rebuild in year two (“he’s only been here 11 months, how could he possibly have prepared for this year’s roster?”). and i definitely haven’ seen a person here who’s respond to me in agreement with even a single point that i’ve made, even though i’ve brought a lot of stats, facts, charts, and anecdotal evidence to back up my takes (which is a lot more than i can say for most of those responding to me).

i know that you want this dumbass debate to end, but coming to me and telling me that everyone agrees with me and i don’t need to respond to the 8 people all responding to me is not the way to go about it. this board is here for discussion and debate. you don’t have to like every single one of them, but don’t totally mischaracterize what’s going on here, or leave it up to me to put an end to it.

we can try and get out of the weeds if you want, but it takes two to tango. so here’s the brass tacks of my argument:

•last year we started with weaver, pope, and mark, and we ended up with a very borderline tourney team that everyone was down on after the season

•this year we start with Vok and possibly Heide. that leaves a LOT of portal success needed to field a team that’s going to be competitive in the sec and not be a bubble team

this take was called ludicrous by one poster, followed by many more responding incredulously to the idea that anyone even opine or prognosticate on our upcoming team at this point in time. and that’s where we are.

i dont think that my take is ludicrous, and i will never understand the incredulity at the idea of opining on our team before we’ve made all of our portal signings.

everybody caught up? good. let’s see if we can move on now.

That's not at all what I said. I said the opposite - posters believe you are being too harsh on Miller for last off-season's portal period, and those reasons were stated. Ultimately, we don't have the information we need to truly know. That is why people are calling our your criticism. If you have definitive information we don't have, please share it. Otherwise, it's solely conjecture.

We don't need to argue in binary constraints. And just because someone doesn't agree fully with a take doesn't mean everything you're/they're saying is wrong. More often than not, this is how the mischaracterization occurs. We don't need to continue to engage in it, Derka. I can speak for me only, but I see no point in taking this further.

Otherwise, thank you for your continued contributions to the basketball discussion here. I hope with the S16 run and increased NIL, we will be having a different discussion at the end of this portal period, as well as next off-season.

i’ve never disagreed with this would wholeheartedly encourage the denizens of this board to interact this way, but you can go back and look at how this all went down and see the all-too-familiar facts:

the first guy to respond to me said i was ludicrous, then js1 comes in with his usual drive by shit talk that doesn’t even attempt to make a substantive point, followed by both of those people announcing that i’m too mentally ill for them to participate any further in the conversation.

thats how this started. not with adults trying to be reasonable in disagreement, but with insults, and pot shots, and snarky, childish drive-by posts, made towards me by other people. and yet who are in here asking to end all of this right now? me, the guy posting substantive basketball talk. i’m really not sure how i’m supposed to be the one to end these dumbass asides when i’m not the one talking shit or arguing just to argue.

As best as I can tell, you (Derka) believe Miller didn't do a good job managing the transfer portal last year, and maybe the same for recruiting. I'd argue that Vok and Swain are pretty good arguments for portal success, and the point made previously about our less than top-level NIL resources probably further handcuffed Miller.

The roster is 100% his responsiblity, not only for "this" year but for years that follow. No disgreement. It seems most of us feel that he was faced with a pretty tough task once he arrived and that alone should probably color any evaluaton of how well he did. That said, yes, he's probably going to have to crush it in the portal this year to build a better team. At least he isn't stuck with a standing start.

Miller didn't get to Texas until the portal was open forcing us to not just play catch-up, but likely saddling Miller with RT guys like Mark and Pope who don't fit his mold based on his teams prior to Texas

Goosby is absolutely part of the equation

We didn't have the money he'll have this year and we have anecdotal data already that he is willing to play ball to go after studs like Cam Williams prior to our S16 run when we finished runner-up in his recruitment

Playing for Sean Miller will be more appealing based on our tourney run

If you want to see it glass half empty, that's fine, but ultimately it's all going to play out over the next few weeks and I'm not going to make myself miserable about a potentially bad roster when we have more reasons than not to expect a roster that is both more talented and what fits our coaches mold. If in a month I'm wrong? That'd suck but I'd rather just be optimistic until then instead of upset.

I cannot make an informed decision on the 2026-27 team on April 1.

Ask me again on May 1.

I feel like Sean Miller did such a piss poor job managing the roster for this past year all we did was make the Sweet 16. Should have done better.

This wasn’t new information. We’ve known this all year. Why not wait to see what we pull in? We all complained at some point during the pre-season and season……nobody complained during a Sweet 16 run. He has money motivated, buyouts paid down, and a tourney finish to recruit on.

Gerry

Texas had meetings with all possible returning players this week

Nothing has changed with Matas - feel good as I have

John Clark - feel good about him currently.

Lewis Obiorah - feel good about him currently

Cam Heide - Texas would take back at right price. Valuable role player for sure, with NCAA and big game experience.

Swain-Texas will do their very best to make a NBA first round picks 20-24 range (not saying as high, but in the range) competitive NIL offer (KD Nike deal part of it), and then it's up to Swain. Heat and Celtics have REAL interest in him, along with others.

Swain would be an idiot to come back if either of those teams would take him in the 1st. Pick 20 is going to be like $8M guaranteed with another $11M club option total in years 3 and 4 that's almost always picked up.

The glaring portal need for next year is a true point who can handle the ball, breakdown a defender on the dribble, and defend. We also need a back-up center/PF who can rebound, defend, and get the garbage put-back points. After that, a couple aggressive guys who have averaged 14+ points a game and are not complete sieves on defense would be a good boost for tournament prospects. Right now we are a team of young, inexperienced swing men and combo guards who will be drinking out of a firehose for a while and Vok. We have some promising younger PF types, but cannot count on consistent output from them, even Codie and Hiede, until they show otherwise.

GUYS I SWEAR IM DOING MY BEST, DERKA JUST WONT LEAVE ME ALONE!!!1!!1! 🙄

it’s funny that literally none of y’all have ever gone to the football board and chastised people for opining on the upcoming roster, yet when i opone on next year’s basketball team the whole board is up in arms.

at this point last year we had a stronger foundation than we do this year, and at the end of the day we made it into the tourney by the skin of our teeth. the team was not great. people hated the team, players, and coach as recently as the ole miss game. me saying that we’ve got a lot of work to do in the portal should never elicit such a bombastic reaction, but if there’s one thing i’ve learned about this website it’s that its denizens absolutely cannot handle even the most valid criticism of their favorite player, team, tv show, etc, so i’m really not sure what i expected.

finally, since y’all don’t think we should be opining on the team right now, then don’t. stop posting about it. stop arguing with me. problem solved.

re: all of the people who keep hoping that swain is coming back:

think of every underclassmen we’ve ever had who was a potential draft pick. how many of them returned to Texas, and how may went to the league?

this isn’t the 90’s. swain returning to Texas would be an absolute shock. plus he’s projected to go in the first round. you can go back 20 years and see guys who weren’t first round picks (boobie and pj) leaving as soon as they got the chance. it would be amazing if he came back, but history suggests he is gone.

"We'll see" = what Texas offers/what I'm offered elsewhere/who else Texas obtains from the portal.

I have a very love/hate relationship with the transfer portal. At least we (purportedly) have more NIL this year.

well according to what he wrote, Matas did not say that he "wasn't sure" he'd be back, which would likely be a negative sign. he said, "we'll see," which can be interpreted in a different light.
