Xavier Becerra social media game is stepping it up leaning into #BecerraEra hashtag

A planned Saturday rally in LA has reportedly tripled in size since Tuesday to over 1000 people.

I’ve decided to fly down to cover it for @TheLatino_Vote Podcast and see if it’s real

I wonder what is driving him in the polls? Is it name recognition from Los Angelinos finally realizing there is an election in June in the midst of the scandal? If so, why is Villaraigosa dithering?

Betty Yee dropped out but no endorsement yet. I think her endorsement would actually be worth more than just the 2% she was polling.

She's endorsing NOT voting for porter. She hates porter.

Her exit interview was hilarious, I wonder how she really feels?

BREAKING: Democrat Betty Yee is suspending her campaign for California governor.

I spoke with her prior to her announcement. She says she made the decision on her own, adding when it came to polling and resources “those things weren’t coming together.”

She isn’t endorsing

so california is gonna have a republican governor? sounds about right for this timeline.

Included our candidate statements from everyone on the ballot. A couple of them are interesting

Becerra is picking up steam.

I thought it was interesting that Rep. Robert Garcia endorsed Porter yesterday. That is a dying campaign, and I’m not sure what the fuck he’s doing.

Becerra had a rally yesterday or the day before where they only expected 200 but ended up with 2000 reservations. He’s getting a lot of grassroots help online and raised a lot of cash the other day.

I think he needs another ad or two though. Steyer is out with new ads that can entice a voter if they aren’t careful. Porter has some new ads out as well.

The Becerra Era might be short lived and we are staring down the barrel of a Tom James Steyer governorship.

His answers at last nights debate = not great.

I'm surprised no one has talked about this stuff:

I thought he seemed much more prepared than his incoherent tv interview he gave last week. Looked much more comfortable and got the clips he wanted for ads.

I’ll wait to see what the post debate polls look like, but it seems like the person who may benefit the most from the debate was Mahan.

I agree insofar as the main question he had to answer was “So, you’re probably wondering who the fuck I am.”

I lol’ed at this, but tbf it probably applies to the average CA Democratic voter:

Average Becerra voter is a 70yo home equity millionaire who pays $19/mo in property tax who thinks the biggest political problems facing the state are lack of parking spaces and insufficient taxpayer subsidy for their property insurance
I was okay with Becerra until hearing his answers at the debate tonight. Freezing home insurance rates is quite possibly the worst policy you could pursue in California right now. What the fuck.

Oh hey (this is a Bay Area station, so makes sense).

POLL ALERT: A KRON4 poll of the #CAGOV race finds San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan ROCKETING into the lead after last night's debate.

🟦Matt Mahan: 46%

🟥Steve Hilton: 15%

🟦Tom Steyer: 12%

🟦Xavier Becerra: 11%

🟦Katie Porter: 8%

🟥Chad Bianco: 6%

the field is terrible. i'm not excited about a billionaire but steyer has the best housing policy.

His team definitely went from “ban institutional investor slopulism” to putting together a smart-sounding platform and strong messaging, but I’m skeptical the boomer environmentalist who has spent so much effort courting The Groups will follow through. He wrote a substack supporting SB 79 - great! - but he had nothing, despite his insinuations, to with its enactment.

Mahan did not openly support SB 79 either (and opposed SB 9 way back), which is a huge mark against him, but to be fair that puts him on the more supportive end of local elected officials (looking at you LA). But he has been on the YIMBY train for years and is the most pragmatic candidate on housing.

Porter, believe it or not, has the strongest YIMBY platform.

No that's not going to happen. But some bullshit is going to happen. California is bought by silicon valley. Every Democrat from California is suspect. I mean...still better than any Republican from any state.

I definitely think the Mahan camp picked the likely-fatal decision to jump in late and not spend money until the race really heated up, in that it allowed the “tech bro lackey” angle to pile up on him (having dorks like Garry Tan being his loudest supporters only made it worse).

I suspect there was a major miscalculation that the good-governance liberalism sentiment that swept the Bay Area held throughout the state and his campaign would naturally gain steam, but it’s big state and that was clearly not the case.

Edit: just saw this. Of all the remaining candidates, Becerra is by the least-serious candidate for housing and isn’t even bothering to try.

JUST CONFIRMED: @tomsteyer, @katieporterca & @mattmahansj will tackle the future of housing at our May 8 CA Gubernatorial Candidates Housing Forum.

Moderated by @ezraklein, broadcast on @nytopinion and The Ezra Klein Show.

I'm in BFE Cali and it's all Steyer all the time with advertising. Mahan is boring, Porter killed her political career a while back, and Becerra doesn't even come up. I think we're going to get Steyer and Hilton in the runoff.

I never cared much for him. His MAGA trolling was sometimes clever. But goddamn the hubris to think none of his behavior would catch up to him. How do you run for a high profile office and think this doesn't get revealed.

Rule 2 - it doesn't have much of an IQ, either.

They held a gov debate last night, and Jesus Christ it was a shit show. Kaitlin Collin’s is terrible as a debate moderator.

This was a good comeback by Porter, though:

Hilton: That's how we should be growing our economy, not by illegal immigration.

Porter: I mean, given that you're an immigrant and you added to our population and we're all having to live with the consequences of that decision.

How did Porter do overall in the governor debate?

I've always felt that she would make a poor executive branch leader because she lacks charisma and few would want to follow her. I think she makes a great legislator and probably could be a fantastic Chief of Staff for a governor or President. Put her in the Chief of Staff in the White House, and she would have the President and Exec branch running smooth. But her aspirations look to be higher and I don't see her reaching the levels she wants.

I expect a reply that a qualified, non-charismatic person is better than a charismatic buffoon. I don't disagree but out of 300m people (or 40m for CA) we should be able to find someone that checks all of the boxes.

I agree completely and I've never understood the fandom on here for her for anything more than the lead enforcer/pitbull that she clearly is of whomever is lucky enough to employ her.

I also think it's a sentiment and taste thing because my friend @Pancho upthread thought she had a clapback that met the moment, but all I saw was middle-age corny in a "she thought she ate" kind of way.

Edited by Vegas64

Actually no, I never said she had a clapback that met the moment. I Thought it was a good reply to Hilton, who is an immigrant himself.

She should have dropped out weeks ago. She still isn’t getting double digits as of today. Same for Villaraigosa

You said it was a good comeback. It tried so hard to be a good comeback that it was maximum cringe which made it a pretty awkward moment for the audience and made it an "ohh" comeback. IYKYK.

Anyways, I think Hilton and Porter are way more alike than they are different which is probably why they flirt so clumsily in debates.

#196

Ezra Klein moderating a gubernatorial housing forum right now. Steyer has done some impressive work to bring himself up to speed, I will admit. Mahan was born for this. Becerra remains completely incoherent, not sure how that’s even possible at this point.

Edit: watching more closely, Katie Porter was straight fire. A progressive telling the unions to go fuck themselves and calling out California Labor Federation leader Lorena Gonzalez by name? I was erect.
