2018-19 Houston Rockets Thread of running it back (mainly)

Hell fucking no we don't need that douchey loser. Guy wouldn't even go play for the Grizzlies' G League team to get back into shape after being out so long. He's not a team player, he's a selfish prick who only cares about himself. It would be bad for the lockerroom in Houston, let someone else take on that reclamation project.

Rockets making a cap relief move according to Clutch:

Rockets are trading Michael Carter-Williams today (UPDATE: Dealt to Chicago).  It is simply to unload his contract. They are sending out cash with MCW and then that team is waiving him.

Woj:

Chicago will send a future conditional second-round pick to complete deal, source says. Salary cap move for the Rockets, who would've had to guarantee Carter-Williams deal for the season by 5 PM today.

Some other guy:

The MCW trade frees up the roster spot needed to retain Danuel House Jr.

The question is, can they get House (using MLE) to the same type of 3-year deal as with Hartenstein and Clark? If so, that's a huge win. Worst-case, #Rockets would still have House's RFA rights this summer.

If Parson ends up being bought out in Memphis, I would take a chance on him. The Rockets could use another wing.

they need a real nba player.  another guy like austin rivers (though ideally more of a wing).

as of right now, the playoff rotation will consist of:

  1. harden
  2. paul
  3. capela
  4. tucker
  5. gordon
  6. rivers
  7. ennis
  8. green
  9. house (iffy)
  10. knight (iffy)

they really need to turn knight into a player who can contribute in the playoffs.  something like knight and a pick for bazemore or demarre carroll.

I like Carroll. If they could get the contracts to match I would also take a swing on Faried. The Rockets need a rebounder off the bench. Faried in limited minutes has a 19.2 TRB%. For comparisons, Capela is 21.5%.

Carroll and Faried for Knight and Gordon would work money wise. Gordon's role is duplicated by both Rivers and Green now.

Paul, Rivers

Harden, Green

Carroll, Ennis, House

Tucker, Faried

Capela

Brooklyn isn't going to trade 2 expiring contracts for 2 years of Gordon and Knight, unless Knight shows he can be a good contributor. You might be able to get 1 of them for Knight+picks, or a 3way trade to net them a decent player, but it's gonna be tough to get them to take on salary for next year. They want a shot at big name free agents this offseason, and currently have about 60m in cap space for next year.

Austin Rivers Needed the Rockets As Much As They Needed Him

...

The Rockets signed Austin Rivers on Christmas Eve to fill a glaring hole in the backcourt created by Chris Paul’s hamstring injury. And Rivers, who was waived by the Suns following the trade that sent Ariza to Washington, D.C., has quickly become an integral part of the Rockets’ recent success. In six games, Rivers is averaging 13.5 points—nearly twice as many as he did with the Wizards this season—on a 56.4 effective field goal percentage (which would be a career high) in starter’s minutes (38). In classic Moreyball fashion, Rivers has upped his 3-point shooting, making (a career-high) 41.5 percent of (a career-high) 6.8 3s per game.

They can be very picky buyers. Once they're at full strength by the end of this month, including a fully healthy Ennis, I expect them to challenge Denver and GS for the top two spots. House has been a revelation--let's see if he can keep it up and Rivers has done a fine job.

when the Bucks destroyed the Ws in Oakland a few weeks ago, became apparent they're not a flash in the pan. Tall and physical at every position - almost robotic. They'll win the East next year when KL leaves.

i wish Harden would pass the ball more down the stretch. Didn't he take like 8 shots in a row towards the end?

The spacing was awful tonight and he was turning it over on those passes.

If there is one aspect of his game that Harden sorely needs to work on, it's cutting down the turnovers. And yes I'm aware that there really isn't any other legitimate ball handler currently available.

This is one of those games we dont lose if CP3 is playing. No way he allows such a silly run by an opponent... what 27-6 over the 3rd/4th? Also, Mike should have called a timeout earlier in that run by Mil, but we know that's been a problem before.

agreed.  the rockets are fine without paul against 80-85% of the teams in the league on a night in, night out basis.  but the upper echelon are dogfights without him that require otherworldly efforts from harden (and some timely shots from the supporting cast) in order to win.

nothing to really be discourage about last night.  they were right there and a couple of more made shots could have swung the outcome.  and that was without paul and gordon (which make up 1/4 of the ideal rotation).
