2026 Texas Midterms - Downballot Boogaloo

Any thoughts from the brain trust on all these more obscure statewide races? Was looking over the ballot and saw a bunch of judicial races.

Some of these people made themselves famous (Bo French, has his own thread, fuck him) but what about MAGA chuds flying under the radar?

Is straight Democratic the play here, or should we not paint with too broad of a brush? Any libertarians or independent candidates worth looking at?

No. Which is nuts. You would think this would be their time to shine but somehow they are crazier and less serious than ever.

There was a concentrated effort to fill every race in Texas this year with a Dem candidate, and it was done, excluding local and county races. And I understand your reticence, because back in 2020 I had a candidate for congress who filed, then fell off the face of the earth. We had some lady run in 22 for a state office and she was definitely not qualified. But the state party doesn't build or vet a bench like the Republicans do, they let the primaries decide that. They feel that eventually the cream will rise to the top and win out...Talarico and Crockett come to mind. Imagine what rift we would have if the party had endorsed one or the other. I know a lot of good people who put themselves out there to run in impssible races, but all the sudden they don't seem so impossible.

CD 10 for example has Caitlin Rourk running against Chris Gober. Gober will not debate her. Gober is one of Musk's primary attorneys in Texas. His website hasn't been updated since before the primaries. Probably because he thinks he has it won.

Here is Caitlin:

"Answering a lifelong call to serve, Caitlin earned her commission as a Military Intelligence Officer through the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School. She served full time in the Texas Army National Guard at Joint Forces Headquarters in Austin, where she supported emergency responses to natural disasters, COVID-19, civil unrest operations, and multiple border mobilizations. She also served in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Caitlin holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Chicago and an MBA from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. She and her husband Sasha, a volunteer EMT and medic who served in the Texas State Guard, are raising their two young children and three dogs in TX-10.

Caitlin is running for Congress because she believes our communities deserve leadership that puts service before politics: leadership that listens, works hard, and gets results."

These are the kind of people filling the void. If you have any questions about any of the candidates in your races, or want some info beyond what their website says, let me know. I will find someone to bring some extra info.

I won't deny that we have some duds, but it's a pretty low percentage compared to ppl like Caitlin.

The real one I'm concerned about is Comptroller. Don Huffhines is a fucking loon. We all know that. But Comptroller is a sneaky-important office. The Comptroller sets out the state's revenue projection at the beginning of every legislative session. And because the constitution requires us to have a balanced budget, that number is the maximum that can be spent (with the caveat that you could always use the Rainy Day Fund).

If Hinojosa wins or if the Dems manage to take the House (not at all implausible), then Huffhines is going to try to trick-fuck them with his revenue projection. He's going to make a projection that is only half of what the revenue is going to be, or something similarly outlandish. So that'll either force some politically unpopular cuts or require raiding the Rainy Day Fund--also unpopular.

Or you can fuck back and slash DPS and Abbott's school at UT for budding fascists. That'll be fun.

Huffines is every bit as nutty as Bo French.

So, straight Dem for the judges?
