I hope Howerton gets another shot. AP Bio was mostly brilliant.

Same for Olson. The Mick was a pretty solid live action show for Fox. Maybe a bigger role on Curb?

DeVito, Day, and McElhenney are just cashing checks.

DeVito is a living legend and continues to embrace the Frank role. Day is regularly cast in movies, mostly stuff that I don't care about, but he's working contantly. McElhenney is more of a writer and producer than an actor I think (based mostly from listening to the podcast) and is doing just fine for himself. He apparently acts too on an Apple+ show that I don't have access to. In general, they're all doing fine outside of Always Sunny and will probably continue to develop outside jobs, which is why these seasons are short with huge time gaps between seasons. I am grateful that they keep it going. I get the sense that they keep going because they genuinely like each other and the fans.

Terrific cast. Is it in production?

For the record, I still love the show and watch every new episode live, but it isn't what it once was.

I'd circle Season 9 as the last great season. So many bangers : Mac Day, Lethal Weapon 6, The Gang Broke Dee.

I look at It's Always Sunny like Curb. It was such a great show, you're just grateful that they're still making it.

Gotta seriously disagree. I'd say Season 13 is where noticeable changes started, some great, some meh, but I think it's necessary for a show to change after that many seasons.

Season 10: The Bang Beats Boggs, Psycho Pete Returns (Dennis' freakout at the phych hospital alone is worthy of greatness), Charlie Work (probably my favorite episode of the entire series), The Gang on Family Fight, Frank Retires (Franquito!)

Season 11: Chardee MacDennis 2, Dee Made a Smut Film, Being Frank (I know many didn't like it, I loved it), McPoyle vs. Ponderosa the Trial of the Century (another of my favorites)

Season 12: The Gang Turns Black (very different but again I loved it), Old Lady House, Wolf Cola, Making Dennis Reynolds a Murderer (both creative and hilarious), Hero or Hate Crime (shows how they can get away with so much that other shows couldn't)

Season 13: This season wasn't the best, it was where Glenn was only participating part time, but still had Times Up and The Gang Makes a Clip Show

Season 14: Thunder Gun 4, Dee Day, The noir episode (very creative, not as hilarious, but thoroughly enjoyable)

Season 15: Again, I liked the Ireland episodes, the series continues to change, but is still very enjoyable.

The Ireland episodes were good but went off track for too long at times. I would have been ok with shorter segments of Charlie meeting his dad and the waitress showing up.

The roller skating episode was high quality in learning more about their background especially that Dee and Dennis were normal once.

Season 5 is the last season where every single episode is incredible IMO. The first five seasons are all classics. Season 6 is the worst season in show history (I don't count the Christmas episode as part of season 6 because it debuted as a special during season 5). The show just feels different now.

I agree 100% on Season 5.  Arguably the peak of TV comedy in my mind.

I felt the same way about Season 6 when it happened, but I've rewatched it in recent years and legitimately love a lot of it.  You get the Ponderosas into the mix, the episode where Mac gets to take a shot at a Flyers game, the White Trash pool episode, the gang buying a boat (introduction of "the implication"), the "brown out" episode where they try to figure out who got Dee pregnant, and Charlie and Dee working in a public school.  Great "character" type of episodes that I mostly didn't like at the time, but it was probably just a result to their following up absolute brilliance.

After Season 6, most seasons were about 30-40% classic episodes and 60-70% more filler type materials.

DeVito is a goddamn national treasure. Frank is one of my all-time favorite TV characters.

McElhenney is tied up in things with Ryan Reynolds -- I'd say he's doing fine. My wife and I are finally watching Hacks (great fucking show BTW) and Olson is Jean Smart's character's daughter on the show.

Yeah there’s a lot of classic Sunny in season 6.

I think weirdly a lot of seasons are better in retrospect. I need to revisit 14, I felt like 13 might be the worst season (started with make paddy great again) but even that had escape room and time’s up. I think several other episodes are actually pretty good too.

I remember thinking season 7 was weak, and that is incorrect.

Looking forward to the vacation on FX's dime new season. Pretty easy to do better than the last couple seasons, but I'm not sure they have it in them. We'll see.

I guess I’m an island when I expect Season 15 to be up there with season 2. I love the what the show was, and I’ll enjoy what they give us in the future, but it ain’t what it once was.

One of absolute favorite episodes (but probably low on most people’s lists) mainly because it is just so niche is The Gang Hits the Slopes which is a spot on parody of late 80s/early 90s ski sex comedies and even features Dean Cameron (star of Ski School and Ski School 2 and of course the classic Summer School).

that is a pretty good choice that is very... essence of Always Sunny.

I feel like probably it's been talked about in some thread somewhere but they've been doing a podcast (glenn mac charlie) where they theoretically are working through and talking about all of the episodes in the series (but of course it's a lot of them just doing whatever) and it came up that Glenn actually came in one day mad because he had been rear ended and spilled cereal in his car.

S_O knows his tv, but the Cereal Defense didn’t do much for me when I rewatched it today. Mac Day is much funnier.

I’m a big Howerton fan, so Making Dennis Reynolds A Murderer gets a honorable mention. Brilliant parody at exactly the right time.

All that said, I’d probably start a newbie on Season 2. There’s really not many episodes per season, and they’re going to have no GD idea what Charlie work entails if you just jump into Season 10.

DID YOU CUM IN MY BURRITO?

The best episode in the series is also a great intro episode - The Gang Gives Frank an Intervention

This is my vote as well (both for best episode in the series, and a great introduction).

The Great Recession and The Gang Exploits the Mortgage Crisis from the same season are great intros as well.

if you have to choose one single episode to convince someone to watch the show, I don't think you can choose any episode besides Reynolds versus Reynolds: the cereal defense. it's the quintessential always sunny episode.

The only problem with that episode is that so much of the humor is derived from the previous decade of laying the groundwork for these characters.

The best later series episodes are all too built on the past to be great intros to the uninititated.

Lots of great suggestions, I'd throw out there some other season 5 eipsodes

The Gang Hits the Road

Quote

Dee: Oh no, no, no, sweet baby, they're gonna eat you alive in Hollywood. Oh, you're definitely gonna end up doing gay porn with this tiny little body of yours. Oh man, kid...

The World Series Defense

Quote

Dee: "Dear Chase," oh shit there's stickers, my God!

Quote

Charlie: I didn't want to do this, but I'm calling 'Kangaroo Court' at this.

The Gang Wrestles for the Troops

Quote

Charlie: “Look at this dude. That's just a bucket of chestnuts.”

Mac: “What is he just foraging for his food?”—

Charlie:  —“I don't know, why the hell would you have a bucket of chestnuts bro!”

Quote

Charlie:  “(To Mac, about Da'Maniac) You know, he kept calling you the n-word earlier?”
Dennis: “Yeah, I wasn't gonna bring that up, I didn't wanna freak him out...”
Mac:  “Me?”
Dennis: “Yes!”
Charlie: “Yes!”
Mac: “He was calling me the n-word?”
Charlie: “Every time you turned your back!”
Dennis: “He was like, "You stupid 'n', go get me grease, 'n'...”
Charlie: “"N" this, "N" that...”
Mac: “Why?”
Dennis: “I don't know, maybe he has a problem with black people...”
Mac:  “Or does he have a problem with me?”
Dennis: “Both, I think. Maybe both.”

This is where I am with later episodes. You have to introduce the gang early to lay the groundwork for the inside jokes of later eps.

I'd go with Underage Drinking: A National Concern. No Frank, but it really sets the tone for subversive humor that became a hallmark of the show.

i somehow find ways to incorporate "that's just a bucket of chestnuts" into my everyday life with surprising regularity.
