Ops is now over 1,000 in double AA. He keeps getting better has he moves up. Not sure how much longer they keep him in AA.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets the September call up

What's a sod poodle, Walter?

I just assumed it was the same as a prairie dog, but I don’t know.

Ivan and the Sod Poodles will be in San Antonio 8/22 through 8/27 to play the Missions. I might try to make it down there one night

27 games left to get 21.  Doable.

Going to really have to pick up the pace. But Cedeno did it in 109 games. Melendez is only going to get maybe half of that.

Not the greatest of starts. 2 swinging Ks

Updated to add a third K looking at a pitch right down the middle of the plate. Not a great start to the spring. Hope they give him plenty of chances.

Ivan Melendez (93)

Ah, the “Hispanic Titanic”. Or is it the “Titanic Hispanic”? Either way, he has gone 0-for-9 with two walks and six strikeouts so far in spring, which is about what was expected from the 24-year-old corner infielder. Last season at AA Amarillo, he had 60 K’s in 170 PA. On the other hand, he also hit 12 homers, and another 18 at High-A Hillsboro. That was a clear six home-runs in total more than any other prospect in the 2023 Diamondbacks’ farm system. Melendez played mostly at third-base, but it seems likely his long-term position is more likely at first (potentially replacing Christian Walker eventually?), or possibly even as a designated hitter.

Reassigned to minor league camp today.

The Atlanta Braves optioned All-Star pitcher Bryce Elder to the minors on Monday, deciding to open the season with Reynaldo Lopez as their fifth starter.

López, who signed a $30 million, three-year deal with the Braves in November, earned the rotation spot by allowing just four earned runs over 16⅔ innings in five spring appearances. He surrendered 10 hits, walked six and struck out 13.

Elder, by comparison, gave up 11 earned runs and 15 hits in 12 innings covering four appearances for an 8.25 ERA.

Elder also began last season at Triple-A Gwinnett but was recalled early in the year and earned his first All-Star Game selection by going 7-2 with a 2.97 ERA ahead of the break.

But the 24-year-old right-hander faded over the second half of the season, seeming to tire as he worked a career-high 174⅔ innings. He finished 12-4 with a 3.81 ERA and was hit hard in Game 3 of the NL Division Series, giving up six runs -- including two homers -- in just 2⅔ innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Rockies made a pair of bullpen moves before tonight’s matchup with the Phillies. Colorado selected righties John Curtiss and Matt Carasiti onto the MLB roster.

----

Curtiss, 31, inked a minor league deal in January. He has been hit hard for a 6.75 ERA over 21 1/3 innings with the Isotopes. The 6’5″ righty had solid results with the Rays and Marlins between 2020-21 before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He returned to the majors with the Mets a year ago, allowing 4.58 earned runs per nine with a modest 19.8% strikeout rate through 30 appearances. Curtiss is out of options, so the Rox would need to designate him for assignment if they don’t keep him in the MLB bullpen.

Duke was sent down the other day, DFA'd off the 40 today. Didn't get a hit in his brief stint.

Claimed by the Mets and optioned to AA
