Watching a former Horn completely by chance - Lucas Gordon pitching for the Winston-Salem Dash. Up 2-0 in the 3rd!

And the Drive came back on him to tie it 2-2, but the Dash won 3-2. Eddie Park, who played for Stanford, had some electric baserunning to score the winning run.

The Angels are signing reliever Corey Knebel to a minor league contract, as first reflected on the MLB.com transaction log. He’ll report to Triple-A Salt Lake. Knebel was granted his release from a non-roster deal with the White Sox earlier this month.

Now 32, Knebel is trying to get back to the majors for the first time since 2022. He has generally been a productive pitcher when healthy — highlighted by an All-Star season as Milwaukee’s closer back in ’17 — but has had various arm issues. He underwent a Tommy John procedure in 2019 and subsequently missed time with lat and shoulder concerns. Knebel didn’t pitch last season as he rehabbed a capsule strain that he suffered with the Phillies two years ago.

Most of his time with Chicago was also spent on the minor league IL. Knebel made six rehab appearances split between the complex and High-A. He only pitched six times for Triple-A Charlotte, though he impressed with 5 1/3 scoreless frames while striking out eight. While it wasn’t enough to convince the Sox to give him a look, that production evidently intrigued the Los Angeles front office.

It’s a fairly inconsequential move for the Halos, who aren’t anywhere near the playoff mix. Knebel will return to free agency this offseason regardless of whether he makes the MLB team. The final six weeks could serve as an audition as he tries to secure a big league opportunity going into 2025.

Faltine going from Daytona to Dayton.

I checked Faltine's stats again.  His batting average is still bad and he strikes out almost half the time.  He has been pretty consistent in that since he turned pro.  As I recall, he set the UT single season record for strikeouts and hasn't been able to improve on that.  His move is from A to A+, where he was about 2 years ago for awhile, so there must be a need for a body in Dayton.  He is such a good infielder if he can improve his hitting his chance of moving up to AA or AAA will drastically improve.

O’s in the Arizona fall league which just wrapped up …

“Outfielder Douglas Hodo III walked 19 times in 21 games to post a .443 OBP. Hodo also showed off his speed with six doubles, a triple, and nine stolen bases. Not too shabby results.”

More on Hodo from an O’s article …

Outfielder Douglas Hodo, who played in the regular season at three levels at Low-A Delmarva, Aberdeen and Bowie, with a .770 OPS and 51 steals, played in 21 Fall League games. He hit .228/.443/.421/.864 with nine steals and he had almost as many walks (19) as strikeouts (21).

He came up to Double-A and carried that over in the Fall League. He got on base a ton and think he led our team in on-base percentage. He was an on base machine and was stealing bags too. Great to see him perform at a high level. And it wasn’t just on base. He had six doubles and a plus .850 OPS. Played great defense in the outfield too, tracking down a lot of plays. Great showing for him.

The Pirates are acquiring righty Chase Shugart from the Red Sox in exchange for minor league right-hander Matt McShane, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. Boston designated Shugart for assignment earlier in the week. The Pirates will need to make a 40-man roster move of their own to finalize the swap.

Shugart, 28, made his big league debut with the BoSox last season and allowed four runs in 8 2/3 innings out of the ’pen. He averaged 96.1 mph on his heater in that brief cup of coffee. He’s pitched in parts of three Triple-A seasons, struggling in the first two before finding more success there in 2024: 4.46 ERA, 25.6% strikeout rate, 10.2% walk rate, 44.4% grounder rate.

During his brief look in the majors, Shugart showed five pitches — a four-seamer, cutter, sinker, slider and changeup. He didn’t induce many whiffs in the majors but logged a solid 11.7% swinging-strike rate in Triple-A. Shugart has a pair of minor league options remaining, so he’ll provide the Bucs with some flexible bullpen depth.

The Rays agreed to minor league deals with right-hander Connor Seabold and catcher Tres Barrera, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Both players will be invited to spring training.

----

The 30-year-old Barrera has appeared in four big league seasons — three with the Nationals and one very brief look with the 2023 Cardinals. The ACES client is a .228/.313/.310 hitter in 164 MLB plate appearances. He spent the 2024 season with los Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican League, hitting .258/.333/.421 in 50 games. Barrera is a .222/.315/.351 hitter in Triple-A. He’s known more for his solid receiving, framing and blocking skills than for his bat.

The Diamondbacks signed relievers Scott McGough and John Curtiss to minor league contracts with invitations to big league camp.

----

Curtiss is a new addition to the organization. He made three big league appearances as a member of the Rockies last season. Curtiss pitched well for Colorado’s top farm team, turning in a 3.96 ERA through 50 innings in an extremely hitter-friendly setting in Albuquerque. That came with a pedestrian 19.1% strikeout percentage but he limited walks to a 7% clip.

A veteran of parts of seven MLB seasons, Curtiss had his best run with the Rays and Marlins between 2020-21. Miami traded him to the Brewers at the ’21 deadline. Curtiss blew out his elbow shortly thereafter and underwent Tommy John surgery that wiped out his ’22 season. He returned to the majors with the Mets two seasons ago, tossing 19 2/3 innings of 4.58 ERA ball.
