Think this idea perhaps explains the over-reliance on Young earlier in the season and corresponding underreliance on Ingram?

I don't. I think they were relying on a known quantity in Young while trying to determine what they "really" had in Ingram and how much they could rely on him when the lights came on.

I also think Ingram's injury against Tulsa has prevented us from really being able to ride him up until the OU game.

This is a good thread as our fanbase in general (probably all fanbases) overreacts way too much with a Big L or Big W.  We weren't going 3-9 (as some predicted) after Maryland and we don't want any part of Bama now.  Watching a replay of OU, there were certainly some great with a big mix of absolute shit on both sides of the ball.  This is an improving team that is fun to watch but we're not near ready for prime time.  Our inconsistency will almost certainly result in another L or 2.   I just want to get through this weekend with a W so hopefully the staff can step back and spend a weak refocusing on fundamentals.   As long as we don't fuck it up this weekend, our bye really couldn't come at a better time to get things cleaned up and get healthy for the home stretch.

Love this post "Skipper"... "Keeping it Real"

I think if Horns can finish no worse than 8-1 in B12 and beat West Virginia, Texas should be in  B12 Championship Game.

Agree that Winning against baylor is important for this Team to maintain their confidence and momentum going into Off Week.....

wesome post. I think the staff knows Roach is better at DE (although I don’t think he’s big enough even for DE) but doesn’t feel like they have the LB depth so they stuck him there to help.

Philosophy thing. We strive to get our 11 best players on the field, and  put them in roles they aren’t best suited for at times to make that happen.

That was stated loud and clear prior to the season. And it’s probably the difference between having your best defense and your best personnel logging minutes.

Hand has been a revelation and a miracle worker at OL coach. His rep was as a run block guy who’s units struggle to pass protect. Well, Sam is nigh untouchable on most passing downs.

Wheeler isn’t just slow. He has no feel for his drops and often finds a spot instead of looking for work. He’s a disaster as a rat. It was crapped on most of the preseason, but we lost a starting DT, LB and two DB’s to the NFL in addition to the joker that stirred the lightening packages drink. And then we lost the punter who kept that defense in great situations all season long. To not expect a drop off was foolish.

Beck showed he was a capable blocker at times in then V/S. But his hands are becoming a difference maker. The staff figuring out Duvernay’s limited passing tree and then cutting him loose to wreak havoc has been nice too.

I loved Dicker’s reaction on the sideline before the kick against OU. No deer in the headlights there. Just confidence with a dab of crazy. Ideal for a specialist.

May biggest complaint is taking our foot off the gas late in games which speaks to the fourth quarter scoring deficit. I know it’s traditional, accepted wisdom to shut down the offense and trade points for time to secure the win. We’re just flawed enough as a team to let that bite us. A different, stronger squad against more inept offenses would be one thing. We’re not that team facing those offenses from here on out. Keep doing whatever got you the lead late in games.

Need y'alls help..... Read somewhere how poorly Texas has been outscored in the 4th quarter of this year's games.  Please add those stats on this thread..... Thanks

My Likes : Aggressive playcalling in BlowU Game and spreading out touches to all the skill players (CJ, LJH, DD, Beck, Watson, Ingram)

Concerns:  DL, NB & LB play

IT BlowU Game Report:

We didn't defeat many blocks. We didn't tackle well at all. We missed too many assignments everywhere but the DL. Our pass rush didn't dictate any rapid heart rate. We lost contain too often. We missed filling the correct gaps at the second level. We failed to scrape correctly too often. Worst of all we got blocked and missed tackles at an alarming rate. It is hard to explain why our backend can't get properly aligned and ready to play coverage this far into the season. I will leave it at that.

We ran fresh out of gas at too many positions. I blame that on the staff. Rotation is not your enemy if conducted with a purpose in mind. When your defenders all look like they are running uphill against the wind it's your job to get fresh bodies into the fight---and realize you should have done that every quarter. Here are the grades:

We didn't play well enough to win on defense this week. The good news is the offense did. We need help in several areas going forward. The DL needs to go back to slashing and creating havoc regardless of the QB. We can't play conservative---it's not our style. We have a nice two deep rotation that probably goes 75-25. 60-40 might be nice number as the bumps and bruises multiply each week.

We just don't have a LB that has instincts to play the position in this league. We have one that can usually swash-buckle his way to the ball and make eye-opening plays at times. Yesterday wasn't his finest hour by a longshot. The other LB is just not developed for a Big 12 success. Except for the nickel position LB is by far the weakest position group on the team. We need to recruit this position very well because the answer must not be on campus right now---otherwise, we would be playing them right now.

It's head-scratching how we bust so many coverages (three td's yesterday directly) because it's always the same cast of characters back there every game. With two DB coaches one would think they could get covering the wheel route and switch routes rules in place. Maybe a switch in personnel could solve the nagging problem. It's a huge problem that hasn't gone away. It ain't lack of talent. This group needs to apologize this week against them bears. They owe the offense.

Trends: Eventhough TEXAS has improved their offense performances on Late Game Closeout Drives, the Horns are being outscored in the 4th quarter of Games.  Really hope this trend changes.

Can Improve: Punt Blocking, and Punting.  Coaches rotating players more on Defense so fresher in 4th quarter.....

Why is the background to your text blue

Most worrisome is the pass rush.  We aren't running a front that helps players make plays on their own, and our dialed up pressure just isn't connecting enough.

For offense, it's run-blocking.  Even though it's light years ahead of last year, it's what's keeping a good offense from being unstoppable.  We lean too much on manufacturing numbers in the run game (either moving Beck around or QB runs), it'd be nice to be able to get a steady 4-yards from a simple tight zone against a full box.
This is a more succinct version of what I was getting at. Our running game is generally average and is not a big play threat, and we work so damn hard to hit like 150ypg.

I think our current trajectory has us achieving the run blocking efficiency you’re looking for next year supposing we can find a great OT to be named later.

Just went back and re-read your previous comment on Defense (below)

" I didn't expect it to be as good as last year but I did expect it to improve some over the course of the year. Instead they've been pretty much the same. Hopefully a confidence booster vs Baylor and the bye will set the stage for the defense to turn it up a notch because the level they're at now will bite this team when the offense has an off day."

Really good insight..... I had not considered if the Defense has been improving week by week or not.  Totally agree that the Defense has to keep getting better for remainder of the Season...... especially at DL, NB and LB.

No idea. But he was healthy enough to kick the shit out of OU (even with multiple long runs called back for penalties).

For real. If not for those 4th Q holds he goes for over 100 against OU (not just the gains that were wiped out, but he would have had more carries to salt away the clock).

They'll look better.  Riley's offense puts a ton of pressure on the LBs and NB in particular.  It might be hard to tell if they are actually improved or just not getting whipsawed every other play.

The DL will look better. We just played the best OL in the league with a lethal dual threat QB, and before that, one of the most experienced OLs in the league with a future NFL draft pick in Risner.

I'll also add that idgaf what anybody says about being scared, I don't want to see that same ou squad again this year. Our D does not match up well with them at all, nobody's does really, and their d with just slightly competent coaching is enough to tip the already precarious scales.

Herman gets it..... Texas is better, but must continue to improve adding more talent and depth to current roster.

Article Excerpt:

"Hopefully one day our 'C game' will be good enough to beat some people. Right now, we have to play our best to win. But if we do play our best, we have a great chance."

Herman is right. After all, both the Maryland and OU performances underscored that in opposite ways. The margin for error still is nowhere close to where it used to be during the Mack Brown heyday.

Herman, in particular, lamented the lack of game-breaking speed the Longhorns have on offense compared to OU, which, in addition to Murray, boasts a pair of burners on the outside in wideouts Marquise Brown and CeeDee Lamb.

"We're fast on the defense. Those guys are faster," Herman said. "We had a long conversation in our recruiting department about finding those guys for our team. We're not elite fast on offense right now."

We would get a good bowl at 10-2 and that’d be a great season, but if ou still won the conference and especially if they got into the playoffs again, then they’d still have had the better season.

If it plays out that way that should really be motivation for the staff and players to be ready to go for the 1st game every year.

We need to continue upgrading talent across the board. We have some good players, we need great players
It takes time, but we're getting there. Even Alabama recruits guys that don't ever see the field.

We're still climbing out of a hole. It takes several years of great classes to be great across the board. Especially at OL, DL, LB. Those positions require a bit more maturity for the entire unit to be great. Our current DL and LB units are mature, but weren't recruited to this scheme and weren't considered great when they were recruited. They were lower ceiling guys that were projected to grow. They're good enough, but not great.

I do think McCulloch and Omenihu are going to be decent pros. Omenihu is starting to play like we wish he would have been playing as a Jr. I'm not sure what position Shark plays at Texas right now.

We just need to do a better job of recruiting the freak athletes at DL.

I like the trajectory that this 2018 Team is on and how they are continuing to improve during this Season.  They still have more upside this year, but agree that Horns have to continue to bui!d a better Roster thru recruiting to compete with the Bama's, tOSU, and Clemson's.....

Rewatched BlowU Game last night and DL, NB and LB's for Horns were more disappointing than expected.  Lot's of mental errors were made. Passing Teams will exploit this Texas Defense especially in areas where the NB & LB's are in pass coverage.  The early 1st quarter injury to BlowU 's Tight End was a game changer for Sooners losing.

The Longhorns still struggle on the Road.  The 4 Game stretch against OkieLite/WVU/Tech/ISU will be difficult to get thru without a loss.  Offense & Defense have to keep improving for this Longhorns Team  to make it to the B12 Championship Game.

Welcome to college football 2018. There's Alabama and everyone else. I don't think any conference has more than 1 or 2 "very good teams" so the odds of a team facing multiple very good teams this season is low. Go through the conferences to see who the very good teams are.

ACC - Clemson and ??????. Clemson has looked OK this season and they've been fortunate they have not faced another similar "very good" team this season while they transition to the Trevor Lawrence era. The rest of the ACC is hammered dogshit.

B1G- Ohio State for sure, though their defense is shaky (though not as bad as OU). Penn State is a carbon copy of OSU with worse coaching apparently (elite offense, avg to below average defense) and Michigan has navigated the easy part of their schedule since ND. Is either PSU or Michigan a very good team? Probably, though one might end up with 3+ losses before the season is done which means they were probably just a good team.

SEC- Beyond Alabama (who hasn't played anyone yet-their season really starts after Thanksgiving), there is Georgia (who hasn't played a very good team yet) and........Barn? Nope, they've already lost 2. LSU? Better than expected, but if they lose to GA this week, they aren't better than 9-3 this season. SEC has actually been worse than is perceived.....this was a year that QB play was supposed to elevate the league, but has been disappointing beyond Tagavoila. (Say, what happened to that Lock fellow everyone was talking up last December?) Maybe the SEC needs to import more Hawaiians/Polynesians.

Pac 12 After Dark - Probably should have most of their games after dark since the only difference between the Pac 12 and ACC this year is the ACC has Clemson. Washington may be the best of a sad bunch but no very good teams here.

I think TX is a Top 15 team, but probably not a Top 5 team, even if we were to magically win out and get to the playoff somehow. We aren't elite at anything, but instead have relied on developed talent executing at a reasonably high level to succeed this season. I say reasonably because we do have Maryland, Tulsa, and K State data points to suggest that we haven't been at a high level all season. But against USC, TCU, and OU we have played at times at an elite level, though not for 4 quarters. Assuming we win this week, I think 9 wins becomes the floor (absent a rash of injuries). Sam may not be VY or Colt, but he's playing at a high enough level (coupled with an improved o-line) to get us to competing for the conference championship this year, which was a big goal this year and the right trend marker.

im interested to see how the metrics over the years have progressed. it seems like more and more teams are able to put up more numbers on offense. for sure some of this has to do with the proliferation of the spread offense and other schemes that create advantages over defenses. a notion ive always thought about in terms of whether an offense is good or a defense is bad is the ability to produce measurable statistics. an example of what i mean is its easy to gauge an offense's productivity by the numbers they put up in passing and rushing. its not so easy to gauge an offensive line because they dont exactly have the same kind of trackable metrics, aside from sacks allowed (but also out of how many attempts). similarly, defenses can be perceived to be good or great if the offenses they face can't seem to produce solid numbers against them or just flat out arent very good under any circumstance. however, this doesnt always tell the entire story because there may just not be any actual metrics taking place regardless of what the defense is doing. ive heard for years about the goddamn secsecsec and how they are so good on defense that the offenses in that conference just cant get anything going. im sure some of the defenses that have come out of that conference have been outstanding, but until there is actually verifiable metrics on the offensive side of the ball that become skewed way low by those singularly outstanding defenses, im not buying that bullshit mantra. teams in other conferences that do focus on aspects of the game that do produce trackable metrics have begun to run away with how much they actually produce. it wasnt too long ago that a college game where 400 yards of total offense was considered to be a solid outing. today, numbers like that are considered to be on the lower end of the offensive productivity. in 2005 when Texas had a top 10 defense stocked with NFL talent, tech still put up incredible numbers on offense.  offenses across the board are doing more because they are able to. today, there are games where teams combine for over 1k yards or more and this is happening all over the country every weekend.

what that means is there is a lot more parity in today's game that seemingly gives the impression that teams are below average or not what could be considered "dominant."  im going to create a spreadsheet and figure out how far the top 25 offenses since 2003-2004 through last season has changed and one for the top 25 defenses. this will compare give a general overview of how much production is taking place over that time frame. i will also see about creating a google doc to post the work for everyone to view.

Sam has improved a lot this season, but he still has a few WTF throws every game. To his credit, they are no longer WTF decisions, but just poor throws that sail out of bounds, over the heads of open receivers, or into the ground short of the target. We can survive those, and have, for the most part. His placement on the deep ball is not there yet, though.

Came here to say this after my tenth rewatch of the game. So many little things he can still get better on that would have huge impacts on our offensive production. Even successful plays that could become even more successul like this one (1:39:25 if it doesn't queue for you):

This was a big first down gain. It could have been a touchdown if it were a good throw. Watch the replay from behind the offense. If he hits Burt on the run he has about 30 yards of grass between him and the next OU defender. I understand in that moment just wanting to make sure it's a completion to get the first down, but as his confidence continues to grow I think he'll keep improving on things like this. To be fair, Burt didn't have to jump and go to the ground to make the catch, but if Ehlinger leads him a bit he's a threat to score.

ok, so here is the link to the google.docs spreadsheet where ive compiled all the stats and made an average of every team that competed at the D1 level. the source i used to gather the stats from apparently includes special teams stats against the defense but not with the offense, so there is a slight discrepancy in the margins of the total yards when looking at offensive  vs defensive production. in reality, that comes out to only about 3 yards for the season difference and i havent looked at the differences to discern what that might be about yet in terms of how many teams that might effect adding to the positive averages or taking away from them.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FRgO43DNdtRfV8dN6TUyies1H-7qi_kke67rFEPKi6Y/edit?usp=sharing

there is definitely a lot more parity from year to year in terms of how many defenses stay in the green and how many fall behind in the comparative average. offensively, things definitely get a lot more interesting as there are a couple years where a small number of teams with highly prolific offenses carried the average. 2008 for example had a huge drop off in production from 2007 yet more teams averaged over 500 ypg (3 in 2007 and 4 in 2008). overall though, offenses are absolutely trending upward and defenses are following them on account of they have to what with being the yin to their yang and all.

for this exercise, i didnt look at all at who a team was or what conference they played in. im sure during the bye week net week i will get way far into the weeds on this and start pulling out numbers and breaking down certain teams that look interesting.

Too lazy to look, but if that's the case it's another reason to hate this conference.  Play round robin, then rematch 2 teams for championship.  In the event of a tie, go first to shit that happened outside of the conference.  Why play anyone good OOC if it potentially hurts you?  And why the fuck would you ever schedule 2 P5 games OOC?

I like the good OOC games a lot, but not if it's going to cost us a spot in the CCG.

Negative sir. OOC has fuckall to do with internal mechanisms for deciding who gets to play in the conference championship game. here are the tiebreaker rules directly from the big xii website with link (ive bolded and underlined the portion directly mentioning your assumption):

Tiebreaker Procedures

Effective July 2017
Conference Competition.  All teams will be scheduled to play nine games as part of the Conference schedule competing in a round-robin format.

Championship Game Participants. The two teams that complete the regular season with the highest winning percentage(s) will be the representatives in the Conference Championship Game.  The team that wins the championship game will be the Big 12 Champion.

Tiebreaker Procedure. If two teams are tied for first place both teams will participate in the championship game and the winner of the head-to-head will be the #1 seed.  If more than two teams tie for first place, the tiebreaker procedures below will be applied separately, to identify each participant in the championship game.

In the event two (or more teams) tie for second or any subsequent position, the tiebreaker procedures below will be used to break all ties as necessary.  For the avoidance of doubt, only Conference records will be used throughout the process:
a.    If two teams are tied, the winner of the regular-season game between the two tied teams shall prevail.
b.    If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 4 will be followed until a determination is made.  If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the regular season game between the two tied teams shall prevail.
     1.    The Conference records of the three or more teams will be compared against each other in a “mini round-robin” format.
     2.    The Conference records of the three or more teams will be compared against the remaining team(s) in the Conference
            standings from top to bottom.
            a. When comparing against the remaining teams in the Conference standings any two-way ties will be broken by head-to-head
            competition before the comparison begins.
            b. If more than a two-way tie exists amongst the remaining teams in the Conference standings, the record against the collective
tied teams as a group will be used.
     3.    Scoring differential among the tied teams. The team or teams with the lowest difference between points scored and points
allowed in games vs. the tied teams is eliminated from consideration.
     4.    Draw (In the event steps 1-3 cannot break a multi-team tie the prevailing team or teams will be determined by draw at the
            Conference office).
In the event tiebreaking procedures are unsuccessful and a draw is necessary in determining any portion of seeding,
the following procedures will be used:
            a. The draw will be conducted in public or with media attendance.
            b. Institutions involved in the drawing have the right to have a local representative in attendance at the drawing.
            c. A single slip of paper for each institution (with name or logo) will be placed in a container and will be drawn in order
of seeding from highest to lowest.

In the event that scheduled regular season contests cannot be played as originally scheduled, every effort shall be made to reschedule such a contest at the earliest possible date, provided that such rescheduling does not interfere with classes, examination periods, NCAA rules, or other sports prohibitions. If contests cannot be rescheduled and in the event of a first-place tie, the Conference tiebreaker system will be utilized to determine championship game participants or a Conference Champion.

Heard Alex Dunlap on radio just now.... Here's some of his comments

Problems with Defense vs BlowU included:

1) 19 Missed Tackles..... too many by LBs and Safeties

2) Lack of DL Pressure... Primarily only blitzes by Safeties & #33 pressured the QB

Good stuff on Defense

1) Kris Boyd had a good game but they did not challenge him much

2) BJ Foster did a great job spying Kyler....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alex is NOT impressed with Stan Drayton thus far....

Quote: "This is only the 2nd game that Keontay Ingram outsnapped Tre Watson.  And as far as I'm concerned,  That's Malpractice..... that's Bad Coaching.  What exactly has Stan Drayton really done?  He was the most valued hire of all these guys. Their running back rotations have been abysmal.  Texas hasn't got a running game going since he got here. And it took him this many games, to figure out that Keontay Ingram who rushes for over 6yds/carry is better than Tre Watson who rushes for 3.2yds/carry? " 🤘

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alex provided great historical numbers on Missed Tackles... We seem to struggle more against speed.....

2018 Missed Tackles Per Game

Ou 19, TCU 9, Tulsa 9, MD 7, USC 4, KState 2

2017 Missed Tackles Per Game

MD 18, Ou 16, TCU 9, USC 9, Tech 8, ISU 7, Baylor 7, San Jose 3

WV/KSt/Osu/Ku.... Each with 5 missed tackles

Bumping this so folks can see quote (above) criticizing Stan Drayton and tackling problems stats against BlowU....

What do folks think about Drayton??  For me so far.... NOT impressed

Drayton better get at least one Stud RB in 2019 Recruiting Class...

Wow, these stats are a bit sobering.  Tom Herman is good at getting teams to over-perform based on their advanced stats, but one would think that we just HAVE to get more explosive on offense and disruptive on defense to continue our momentum beyond this season.  I don't understand how we can be so good at creating turnovers yet so bad at generating and stopping big plays.

19 Missed Tackles against BlowU last Saturday.  LBs were disappointing and are critical to Orlando's Defense....

Also for more take it to the house big plays on Offense, Texas needs more speed and quickness at RB (Damn it Drayton) and WR.
