Less predictability on offense, especially when we are playing with a lead.

Quicker developing runs, including more that don't have any QB option built in.

Option run and play action pass plays with two backs in the backfield.

Better blitz / pass rush recognition by Vahe

Texas makes a point of missing great QB’s every year - Mayfield, Brewer.  Those aren’t Herman’s misses of course, but it seems to be a history at Texas.  Colt was the man, as was VY, but neither really had the talent to make a splash at the next level (which means nothing to the Horns, ((but is a bit fucking curious)), and certainly an indicator of great talent).  I have a hard time believing if Texas had wanted Mahomes, they could have had him.  All spilled milk, but beyond the Colt and Vince, I can’t think of one quarterback I would want back other than Opie - kid was a winner first and a player second -

Mahomes was only a 3 star out of Whitehouse Tx, and nobody wanted Mayfield because he was small and susceptible to injury so that's why Baker had to Walk On TWICE.

Lot's of players get missed by one school and are great at another school.  One of best examples of one TEXAS got right was Earl Thomas......

Earl was only a 3 Star player and not rated in the Top 300 players.....

Great point on 2 backs, or at least Beck as a lead blocker.  Slow developing run plays sucked against Baylor......

What do Surly Folks think about Stan Drayton so far??

Prior to the Baylor game last Friday on HornFM, Alex Dunlap said the following  about Drayton: "What exactly has Stan Drayton really done?  He was the most valued hire of all these guys. Their running back rotations have been abysmal.  Texas hasn't got a running game going since he got here."

As for me..... I thought Young or Toneil would be much better this year... Has Not Happened.... Have not seen much from Drayton's RB recruiting yet. Not using RBs more in pass game makes no sense either.   Drayton has been a disappointing coach so far....not sure why Drayton doesn't get more criticism from Surly Folks....

OSU is a great game to build confidence in our run game. We should be able to run at will on them. They are struggling mightily this year up front.
You assume the offensive staff will tailor their game plan to their available roster 's ability to exploit the opponents weakness.

Narrator: They will not.

I know it's popular to criticize everything about the offensive... collaboration, but I thought our game plan for OU was stellar. Granted, OU's weakness on defense is just about everything, but it's still progress.

Very nice play by Locke, but damn -- Brandon Jones comes up like he's been shot out of a cannon.  If Locke hadn't made the play, Boyd and/or Jones would have.  Hell, Jones knocked over Boyd while he was trying to get in on the fun.

Agreed.  Jones is taking much better angles to runners this year.

Overload and zone blitz packages creating real havoc for opposing OLs, especially now that we are getting some pressure rushing 3 or 4.  The biggest improvement I'd like to see is with in-game adjustments on the offensive side of the ball.  There have been some good offensive game plans but when things go wrong the staff is taking a long time to adjust.

My biggest pet peeve is to have the QB always taking the snap in shotgun. If you have 4th and half a yard and you have a big QB, you put him under center, put a FB up close behind him to push and you sneak it. You make that 95% of the time.

Instead we put Sam taking a five yard snap and then sneak it or run a slow developing option. That alone gives the edge guys the ability to crash and they make the tackle behind the line half the time.

Coaches always say “well they have always worked out of the gun in high school” that’s just BS. It’s not hard to learn to take a direct snap from center

A variation could be lining up in the pistol with a fullback offset to one side of the QB as a lead blocker to push through whatever might open up. This would allow for the possibility of reading where the hole is going to open up and following it through to paydirt. It also sets up nicely for an RPO with a swing pass if tre newton lined up behind him or LJH/CJ were out wide. Anything that adds multiplicity to the offense needs to happen, much like how the jump pass did by LJH to CJ against sucklahoma.

Interesting seeing some TCU folks blaming Cumbie's regression this Season partly due to Dykes leaving for SMU.

Wonder if Herman is still looking to add more experience to the Offensive Analyst group?

Saban still enjoys rotating in experienced ex-coaches.....

Ex-Vols coach Butch Jones to serve as analyst for Alabama vs. Tennessee

Alabama analyst Butch Jones will travel with the team for Saturday's game at Tennessee, where he served as head coach for the past five seasons.

Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said Wednesday that Jones will be with the team in Knoxville, as he has for all other games this season. Jones has been assisting offensive coordinator Mike Locksley by providing observations of practices and games.

"Any time you have somebody on your staff that just coached at a place, he obviously knows more about the personnel," Saban said Wednesday, "But their schemes on offense and defense are completely different from what they've been in the past, so that's no real advantage at all."

Jones went 34-27 at Tennessee before being fired Nov. 12, 2017. His hiring at Alabama was finalized March 20, and he is earning $35,000 this season.

"Butch can't coach the players," Saban said. "He works hard in terms of assisting our coaches and planning and preparation. Butch is a very bright guy and he's done a really good job of that. He basically assists Mike as much as possible."

I'm telling you guys, having a dedicated special teams coordinator that only does special teams is the answer. They will be able to focus their entire practice time to the specialists and the key players who will be tasked to block for the punter or block kicks/punts. I know anyone can get back there, but I think there are certain places on each team where those things are more likely to happen based on the personnel in the game and a dedicated special teams coordinator would ideally be able to identify where those weak points are and line up the right personnel there to enable them to go for the killshot instead of just trying to squeeze every man in and hope someone gets lucky.

Hard to commit a Coach to Special Teams only....... Even Saban has his Special Teams Coach also coach another group (Tight Ends).

Jeff Banks begins his first season on head coach Nick Saban’s staff as the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach after spending the previous five years in the same role at Texas A&M.

Banks comes to Alabama after five years as the tight ends and special teams coordinator for Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M. The Aggies boasted one of the nation’s top special teams units in 2017, ranking third nationally in net punting (42.29 ypp) and second nationally in punt returns with a 17.1 average and two touchdown. Punter Shane Tripucka ranked sixth nationally in punting with an average of 45.5 yards per punt. Banks’ units were No. 1 nationally with eight blocked kicks a season ago.

There are two wide receiver coaches on the current staff at Texas. As I said upthread, I know Herman wanted to maintain continuity on the staff and keep all of his coaches from year 1. So he hired Hand away from Auburn and moved around some of the chess pieces internally to make it all fit. I may be missing something, but it seems that two coaches for receivers is unnecessary. If one of them is experiences in coaching special teams, then perhaps he should assume sole responsibility of the special teams and ensure they are as sound as possible. Special teams is an entire phase of the game that largely gets ignored in today's game unless a once in a generation like Dickson comes along and we all swoon over him while he is booting balls inside the 5 then they are taking 90 degree bounces out of bounds or we have gunners who get down field to keep them from going into the endzone. Dicker is doing a damn good job as a freshman, but imagine how much better he could be if he had a coach dedicated to him when the rest of the team is doing its thing at the other end of the field? Applying some science to this isn't hard and will pay dividends on the field in the field position game that has been utterly disastrous for years outside of Dickerson and his magical foot. Whatever team figures out that a having dedicated special teams coordinator first is going to change the game forever and many programs will follow.

So 2 Questions.....

1) Are you satisfied with 10-2 and qualifying for B12 Championship Game?

2) What areas to improve  do you hope are getting the most attention from Texas FB Coaches before Okie Lite game?

1) Right now? Fuck no. No losses. After the fact? Ask me when it happens.

2) First drive defense, 4th quarter offense. Lots of little tweaks, of course, on both sides of the ball, but the big themes are to start and finish better.

1) Yes satisfied, but agree hoping for 11-1 and B12 Champ Game w/out BlowU

2) Tackling, short pass game w/more RB & TE plays, punt team blocking with shorter time for Buj to punt,  and LB pass coverage..... 🤘

1. That would depend. If we make the B12 Championship game then I am not going to be particularly satisfied if we lose it. And I sure as hell am not going to be satisfied by any scenario that involves OU winning it. So yeah that might not be fair when I once said I just want to see them win seven games but with success comes higher stakes.

2. Finishing games. In the Big 12 you need to keep scoring until the gun. I don't care if you are up by 30 points you need to keep trying to put that ball in the end zone. It seems like we start to get complacent or intentionally try to take the air out of the ball once we get up. That strikes me as setting us up to lose games we had won.

So how good is this 2018 Longhorn FB Team really??

----------------------------------------------------------------------

My Answer: Good working towards Great

With USC & TCU not living up to expectations, in my mind I can't value those Wins as much.  Horn's performance during 1st three qtrs of BlowU showed potentially how GREAT this Texas FB TEAM can be.  Still cognizant of most preseason expectations of 8-4 or 9-3.......

So in Keepin It Real..... still more to improve based on results so far.

Good 9-3 or 10-2........ Work in Progress to be Great 🤘

Due to the new Redshirt/Transfer Rules....... I think going forward most Head Coaches will have to add at least 1-2 Athletes each year that in a pinch could take snaps as a QB in addition to playing a WR/RB/DB role.

Nebraska & Clemson are examples this year where due to transfers their QB depth was really hurt.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Here's an example of this type of Athlete that just committed to the Longhorns......

"Texas has landed one of the more intriguing prospects in the state. Four-star Odessa Permian athlete Peyton Powell shut down his recruitment and gave the Longhorns a verbal pledge.

Powell picked up an offer from Texas over the summer but didn't show a lot of interest until the Longhorns started winning on the field. Texas hosted him for an official visit and made a huge impression on him.

Powell picked Texas over offers from Baylor, Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Utah, Washington State and a handful of other major programs.  Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck and inside receivers coach Corby Meekins were both involved in Powell's recruitment.

Powell plays quarterback for Odessa Permian and will have an opportunity to compete under center. Texas originally offered him as a wide receiver, and he also has the potential to transition to defensive back.  At 6-foot-2, 182 pounds, Powell is ranked as the No. 19 athlete in the country and No. 42 overall prospect in the state, per 247Sports Composite."

Glad to see both Beck & Meekins having success landing Powell's commitment.

unfortunately, it is not an isolated play for wheeler. he has many reads that make one wonder what exactly he is thinking.

something along the lines of...lead draw, stay low, attack the gap, donuts!

He must have watched the least amount of film in all history of linebackers to have that poor of recognition skills.

And yet, he is a starter...

That doesn't look like Johnson's fault that looks like a miscommunication in the secondary. If Johnson had've followed the slant the RB would have been in single coverage with a lot of space to work. Pick your poison.

Can't read the # but whoever the far side corner is needs to shift over.

I keep trying to make up an excuse for this as a read of the pulling guard... Can't.

If you really wanna come up with a reason, this is it:  Wheeler thinks it's a PA pass and not a dive (probably because Baylor gets absolutely zero movement upfront).  So Wheeler reads fake the play as a fake power, roll-out pass to the TE.  By jamming the TE (who is probably his pass responsibility), he thinks he's shutting down the designed outlet for the pass that's coming.

No, he's right. That looks like zone. The RB runs right to the RCB that is sitting in that space. Everyone is playing a space (maybe a match) and Johnson played man. Misunderstood coverage is my guess, because everyone else plays it right.

If Johnson drops, the receiver is still wide open, but the throw has to have a bit of an arc, instead of on a line.

I would like the safety (Sterns) to not have bailed so much, but it wasn't going to matter with the busted LB cover.

Either it was zone and he played man or the corner fucked up his assignment.

Not saying Gary didn't goof up the play - just not sure how culpable he is there.

Like you said, I think Sterns needed to play it tighter. The secondary should have covered for GJ and they didn't.
