I’m shocked.

Walton should go in and ask what they’re going to do. If they don’t back him publicly then just resign. Former Lebron coaches don’t get a lot of chances.

on the other side, magic should pull a reverse Riley and hire mark Jackson. Then look Lebron dead in the eye and say “I’m the captain now.”

Brow to Warriors. Write it down

Just put it through the trade machine. Green and boogie for the brow works. If you are going to have to break up the core then this isn’t a bad route.

Except that Boston can't trade for AD until the offseason (unless they include Kyrie... can't have two designated players on the roster at once or something). And they figure to be the ones who can really drive up the bidding.

doesn anyone out there have a chance to blow the Pels away before Boston gets that chance? Anyone with some young talent a pick or two?

Not many. And the ones with enough assets might not deem it worthwhile if they don't think they can win enough in the next 16 months to convince him to stay.

I've said before that I don't think New Orleans has any desire to be the Lakers of the Bayou with some combination of Ball, Ingram, Hart, and Kuzma joining Randle. They already know what that roster looks like, and being just good enough to be the 9th or 10th seed is the worst possible trade outcome. Maybe a 3-teamer is out there.

Danny Ainge is going to get him. This is what he's been waiting for, the exact moment AD decided to make this shit public. Like Aggie said, shit's a waiting game now. Unless Brow throws a Kawhi-sized wrench in the equation and says he'll only play in LA.

Yep. There's zero incentive to trade him before the deadline unless his intentions are to go nuclear like Kawhi/Butler. Wait for the offseason, and let teams throw their entire draft board at you.

Rich Paul is choosing now--Brow out and the Pelicans free-falling--to make this public in hopes that New Orleans panics and gets impatient.

I would argue that telling them privately would give New Orleans the most leverage but that's not how things are done today.

The next cba is going to be interesting. They thought they had this whole small market thing figured out with the super max and now the salaries are so high that players are willingly walking away from tens of millions of dollars to dictate where they can play. I don't really blame AD because the pelicans have put shit around him since the day they drafted him but this is not good for the league.

This is all about Rich Paul helping his buddy Lebron get a superstar to play with in LA.  You will soon hear that Davis only wants to play for the Lakers.  The question is does New Orleans take that shit sandwich of decent players (Kuzma, Ball, Ingraham, Hart) or wait it out and see if Boston will trade Taytum or Brown plus 3-4 draft picks.

philly could offer ben simmons.  that's probably the only "blow 'em away" offer before boston can get involved this summer.

I'm not sure how much it's going to matter, even if AD does come out and say, "Lakers or bust."  Recent history suggests it doesn't.  Paul George basically told the league that he was Lakers' bound...traded to OKC.  Kyrie gave Cleveland the list of his preferred teams, New York, Minnesota, Miami, and San Antonio that he'd re-sign with...traded to Boston.  Kawhi's uncle made it clear that his nephew wants to be in LA...shipped out of the country.  Jimmy Butler went nuclear trying to get himself to Miami...traded to Philly.

If I'm Boston or another contending team, I'm still taking the AD risk if I think it makes my team a serious championship contender.  The Lakers are unlikely to keep open enough cap space for a full max until June 2020 (hard to see them wasting another LeBron year with so-so players on 1-year deals).  So, when Davis becomes a free agent, the Lakers probably won't be an option anyway, and you've had a year to sell him on your culture.

Davis is soft mentally and physically. He's not winning a title as the main guy anytime soon in the NBA.

Would he be considered the main guy on Boston?  I'd think so.  I'd really like that team's chances next year--even if it costs them Tatum--especially if KD leaves Golden State.

Agreed. He's Kevin Garnett 2.0 in that sense. But at least Garnett did get his team to a WCF. But Davis is never going to win shit as the main piece on the team. He's going to need to be paired up like Garnett did to make deep playoff runs.

yup. If AD was smart, he'd want to pair up with Pops in SA, maybe Pops won't retire then for a year or two.

Depends if Irving stays, right now, that is not a given.

So.... a few of us have been speculating about AD and his free agency all year.  Let's review what we know so we limit the stupidity in the thread with outlandish ideas or trade scenarios.

1.  Davis is still under contract, so the Cans don't have to move him before this season's deadline.  They certainly can, but they could wait until the summer or even until next year's deadline.

2.  Boston can't make another trade for this type of money until July 1st this year because of Kyrie's deal.  So, if the Pelicans really like Boston's assets better and they're willing to put them in a deal, then the Pelicans have to wait.

3.  The Lakers, who probably would be willing to move anyone except Lebron, need to make this deal in the next 10 days.  They passed on dealing for PG13 thinking he'd come as a UFA.  He didn't.  They passed on dealing for Kawhi thinking he'd come as a UFA, reportedly he's not interested in playing for the Lakers now.  They can't fail again, especially considering they've already wasted their asset in Julius Randle and Ball and Ingram's trade value continues to erode slightly.  The Lakers do NOT want Boston to get involved so they'll do whatever they can to get this done by this year's deadline.

4.  Rich Paul, Davis' agent, is a Lebron lackey.  Although they keep their books clean, most people feel Lebron has financial interests in Paul's agency.  Lebron basically made Rich Paul and therefore he does Lebron's bidding.  He will be pushing the Cans and Davis heavily to the Lakers.  This is the Lakers shot and Paul's shot.

5.  Some organizations/teams are tiring of player's leveraging their statuses to try and get to a destination of their choice.  Davis could make this easy and tell the Cans privately that he'll only go to LA or only go to Boston and then let the Cans try and get all they can from them understanding there is only one destination.  However, privately, some teams loved what the Spurs did last summer when Kawhi Leonard was trying to leverage his situation into a trade to a California destination.  The Spurs didn't capitulate and literally shipped his ass out of the country.  Some teams loved this, where the Cans one?  No idea.

6.  Dell Demps, the Cans GM, is considered a weak and ineffectual GM.  David Stern called him "lousy".  He has an ugly track record so the Pelicans front office has a history of incompetence so betting on logic or intelligence is probably a bad bet.  Gayle Benson (Tom's widow), the Saints owners is the Cans' owner.  She'll probably be a de facto rubber stamp.

7.  The Lakers are going to be the story the next 10 days because of all the reasons mentioned.  If they pass the deadline then it'll be Celtics/Lakers, but think outside the box.  Nobody had OKC as a trade partner for PG13 when this happened 2 years ago.  Nobody had Toronto in the top 5-6 destinations when it first became obvious Kawhi wanted to be traded from the Spurs.  If the big dogs try to get too cute, as I have alleged the Lakers and the Sixers (with Kawhi) have done in the past, then a team off the radar could enter the fray and get a deal done quickly in an effort to win with Davis and get him to stay...... like George.  Kawhi is mulling it over.

8.  If Davis wants to blow up his trade value and force a trade somewhere, he'll be very, very public about his intentions.  If he has a few destinations and would like to get out of New Orleans, then he'll handle this privately.  Paul's group and other agent's will leak rumors incessantly, but how Davis handles this, publicly, will be interesting.

EDIT:

Also, one other nugget.... Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving are really, really close.

Just to clarify on this point - the Rose Rule doesn't allow a team to have two non-rookie "designated players" who were acquired by trade.

Oh wow. I feel like someone made this take a few pages back before Boogie even touched the floor.

There is no reason for the Pels to trade Davis this season. They have him for another season. If he doesn't feel like playing or signing a contract extension he can go fuck himself as far as the FO should be concerned.

The smart move would be to wait until July when you know who is healthy, which teams have which picks (or which rookies), and who needs him. Shipping Davis to LA right now for a bunch of unproven players that may or may not develop and draft picks with huge question marks on them does not make any sense.

Then again, a bunch of NBA FO's are run by idiots so I wouldn't be surprised if he got shipped before the deadline.

Garnett was not soft in any way.

And he was the regular season MVP on that Boston championship team, and the heart and soul, even though they needed contributions from the entire Big 3 (and friends) to get over the hump.

KG wasn't soft, although he's what KD would call a "fake tough guy" as he typically went after guys smaller or less thought of than him.  He was strategic in who he went after.  All of that probably doesn't mean much but I do think KG needed another great player, particularly a guy who could take over offensively in the clutch, a la Paul Pierce.  But KG almost never missed games in Minnesota and was a rock when it came to competing so I don't think KG was soft.

Davis does miss games, he also leaves a lot of games so his games played may be inflated a touch.  Again, he's an ultra-amazing player and perhaps just on talent, in the top 3, but Davis can't seem to make his teammates good enough to make some runs.  Now, there is context.  The West is brutal and there always seemed to be some bad luck involved with health, but he had a team of Jrue Holiday, Tyreke Evans, and Eric Gordon along with specialists like Ryan Anderson (when he could shoot) and then some journeyman fill ins who could round out a rotation and couldn't get to the playoffs.  Jrue got hurt and Gordon was always in and out of the lineup but they won 34 games.  2 years later, they had a bunch of injuries and won 30.  1 year after that with DMC at the deadline, Jrue, Lance, and stuff, they won 34 games.  There is context and the front office let him down, but he's not the winning force some other are.

Davis definitely needs another guy who can almost act as the initiator and closer offensively.  I think he'd spectacular with a healthy Irving (if that exists) as he could continue to put up absurd numbers but Irving could close games as long as you fill in some things around them.  Lebron would be fun for a couple of years but I do wonder how'd they mesh as Lebron has never played with a dominant block player (AD can play face up though)....

Instead of Hakeem and Ralph Sampson they'd have Hakeem and Hakeem.

I guess, but in today's NBA, having 2 bigs on the floor is pretty uncommon. Not sure how they would do on defense, but I guess that's not really a concern in today's NBA. It just seems like Embiid would be relegated to a stretch 4 position, which isn't ideal, but whatever. NOLA tried to the 2 bigs with Boogie/Davis, and it kind of worked, but wasn't some huge success that other teams want to copy it.

I do wonder if Philly could find a way to make a trade for AD while keeping Simmons. Send Butler to a 3rd team, and lots of picks to NOLA, or just try to turn Butler into some decent players.
