What's the word on Mastros? Just ask because go to school with the owners son.

Its a club. Almost literally. Dim lights, loud music, cramped space.

Pappas, B&B, and Vic And Anthonys are the  3 best in town, imo

We went to Pappa's downtown before Christmas and it was top notch.

Service, food and wine were all excellent.  It wasn't cheap, but I didn't leave feeling like I had been violated (from a value stand point) as is the case at Ruth's Chris or Flemings.

They have two Master sommeliers on staff in their group and that means a shit ton of advanced sommeliers working there.

A truly “best meal” night at Vic & Anthony’s tonight.

Champagne, oysters, and caviar, followed by a Bourgogne and Wagyu steaks.

Blantons to finish.

Damn good night.

I'm planning a post Rodeo feast this weekend at Goode Co Seafood. The wife gets grilled oysters and seafood, I get crawfish and steak. We both get Damn Goode Margaritas. Best of both worlds.

When looking for a quiet and or intimate steak dinner I opt for Brenner's off the Katy Fwy.  About 10 tables in the main dining area.  Good place to take the parentals.

Best filet mignon in the city? I'm trying to eat leaner steaks.

the filet at vic and anthony's was excellent tonight. avoid the potatoes au gratin if you're trying to eat leaner

My dad had a gift card for Perry’s, and it was avg at best

bread - very good

French onion soup - avg to below avg. the cheese on top wasn’t correct

salad - horrible. It wasn’t a wedge and it was drowning. The bacon looked like pre cooked

steaks - meh

I’ll go back for their Friday lunch, but never for dinner.

I always order the bleu cheese dressing on the side. As a rule, 99% of steakhouses drown their wedge salads in dressing.

I don’t think I’ve ordered a steak at Perry’s. Appetizers, a steak salad or two, but always always the Friday pork chop.

I have a thing at The Palm downtown on Thursday. I haven’t been to the new location yet. I’m not sure if somebody else is paying. If it’s light appetizers or some shit like that, I’ll bounce after an hour.

Big-time steak places are so boring.

Make a meal out of the appetizer/salad page.  Foie gras, steak tartare, shrimp, oysters, caesar salad with lots of anchovies. Maybe a great dessert or two?

Errybody on Surly knows how to cook a great Big-time steak on their own.

YMMV.

I've always thought Perry's tastes like they're getting their food out of a Sysco bag and just heating it up.

A relative was a salesman for Sysco. Yep, they are always looking for ways to reduce prep time and kitchen staff, so they came up with some pretty goofy experimental products. I honestly wouldn’t put anything past them.

I sat through some bullshit for a free lunch at Morton’s Downtown this week.

Filet mignon was on point. Good crust, well seasoned, and tender. Excellent mashed potatoes as well. But for some reason they use frozen green beans. I mean $42 a plate and frozen vegetables. What in the actual f***?

I wasn’t a fan of the key lime pie either. Solid cup of coffee.

The restaurant was packed, they seem to be doing pretty good business.

Went to Georgia James for our anniversary.  It's was excellent, but I just have a hard time eating a deliciously expensive cut of steak that I can rival at home on my cast iron with a reverse sear.  The ambeance, drinks, appetizers, and of course the occasion made it worth it though.  Definitely a special occasion place unless you are Surly 1%.

I just can’t get behind the new location. Old one was so much better. The new one looks like the all day dining venue at a generic Westin hotel. I find it to be a soulless space. I ate at the original location dozens of times. I’ve darkened the door of the new space twice and I live less than a mile away.

I mostly agree with you, but it’s tough to find dry aged steaks for sale outside of restaurants now. And if you find them, you’re breaking even. Might as well let B&B cook it for you.

HEB, Whole Foods, and Central Market(?) killed off their dry aged steaks at the butcher’s counter after Covid. Prior to 2020, Whole Foods sold a 30 or 45 day dry aged ribeye for under $25 a pound. What a glorious time to be alive. I didn’t have a grill at my old place in the Heights, but I could make a great steak with a cast iron pan on the stove.

I fully expect to get flamed, but the bone in ribeye at Saltgrass slams and goes.

At $46, it’s half the price of the high end places.

If you’re too ashamed to be spotted at at a Landry’s reataurant, their delivery fee is only $4.99.

ive eaten at saltgrass baytown and port arthur many many many times, zero issues and it’s always been very good

I’ve been taking my son and the chicken tenders he gets are surprisingly excellent. I would love to hate in that place but I just can’t.

The Memorial and 59 locations are very solid. Shepherd is more of a bar.

I worked over by the one in Memorial for years. They used to serve a bowl of steak soup for like $10 and a tall Shiner Bock for $2-3. Good times. Top 5 soup for me. They made it from scratch with steak trimmings. I wish they’d bring it back.
