Seems like a weird post to get neg repped on.  I like that place, particularly back when I used to enjoy beer.  Great pies  But that charging station seems like a weird capital expense considering the whole thing is gonna be leveled in less than 24 months.  Like buying a new charger for a phone you plan to upgrade next month with a different adapter.

Fun fact, Pat Oles who is redeveloping that whole site is a Texas-Ex.  And his cousin, who obviously looks nothing like him, is Giancarlo Esposito (aka Gus Fring).

Was reminded yesterday of the goodness that is Giovanni's on Lamar and Barton Skyway. It's tucked away inside the Food Mart there. Hadn't been there in some time but still so good.

Run by the chef at the old Mezzaluna downtown.

That's a blast from the past.  I used to go to Mezzaluna quite a bit.  Not the greatest Italian food in history, but among the best in Austin at the time.  Definite late-80's early-90's vibe, though.

Mezzaluna was mine and my wife’s favorite restaurant back in the day. The had some Gorgonzola pasta dish that we both thought was great. Even made a point to go the weekend they closed for one last meal. My wife saved half her meal to take home and enjoy the next day, and subsequently dropped the box on the sidewalk leaving the place. Those frozen Bellinis did her in lol.

That's the wrong Pinthouse Ygifs. Barshop Oles is redeveloping the Pinthouse Pizza at Brodie Oaks.  Pinthouse Brewery is on Ben White down by the 35

Conan's still my absolute favorite pizza in Austin.  Long live the Savage on Whole Wheat!

I'm a staunch supporter of conans, but be aware that if you place an order for delivery, they have a a $4 delivery fee.  I found out the hard way.

I've never had it, so this is a legitimate question. Why does everyone prefer the whole wheat crust there?

It's grainy and tastes better.  Pretty sure all the pizzas by the slice served at lunch are on whole wheat.

Not for everybody, but def the local, OG way to go.

They are correct above.  Perfect Conans order is salad with ranch, deep dish savage on whole wheat, with anchioveys and japs and a pitcher of beer.  Plus some change to play arcade games while you wait.

Got around to trying Pizza Di Roma, good call.  I went with a basic cheese pie.  It had a fantastic crust.  Overall, it was pretty salty, I suspect they put some parmesan or pecorino on it in addition to mozzarella.  Good sauce.  Will be back, it's a good addition to Feral, Little Deli, Bufalina, Homeslice.  Thanks @HenryJames.

Pedroso’s, imo.

If you go to the Justin Lane location, don't park in front of Love Wheel Records, they'll boot your car within minutes.  Ask me how I know.  Nothing to do with the record shop, it's the landlord.  Empty parking lot, predatory boot vigilantes.  Pedroso's manager was pissed but he said it happens many times every night and he hasn't been able to get them to make a deal.

Lalas has a deal that you can park at the church across the street. It’s the best place to park for both of them.

Probably been mentioned, but Jersey Giant Pizza on 71 out by Hamilton Pool Road is very good. Stopped and picked one up coming back from Lake LBJ today. Outstanding as usual.

For those of you who love the Savage at Conan's: is it worth it? It's $26 for a small after taxes. That just seems insanely expensive. Is that enough to feed at least 2 people?

What is this "small" of which you speak?

See, one of life's great pleasures is when the family is outta town.  You order a Savage, all the way -- add the jalapenos and anchovies.  And yeah, you order a large.  You eat a few slices for dinner.

Then you eat a slice cold for breakfast on the way to work the next day.

Then maybe another coupla slices for dinner that night.  Cold?  Heated up on the griddle?  Hey man, dealer's choice!

Yeah, I've never in my life ordered anything other than a large.  You gotta get deep dish, and the whole wheat crust is delicious, it's actually better than the standard white.  So it's a thick, substantial pizza pie.

But let's do some math.  Conan's website says the small is 10" and the large is 14".  So total area of the small is 98.5 in^2,  and the total area of the large is 138 in^2.  So half the small is 49 in^2.  Back in my high school and college days I could just about eat a large by myself.  But these days I'm older and wiser and I'm also not a great big fat person, so usually 2 out of 8 slices on a large, is enough for me.  That's 34.5 in^2 which is less than half of the small, so the small would be sufficient for 2 people.  If you wanted to do 3 slices, you'd get 51.8 in^2 out of a large, which is slightly more than the 49 in^2 that represents half of a small.

In conclusion, the small is probably okay for two, as long as you are not great big fat people.

But seriously, why?  Just order the large and make sure you have enough for some leftovers.  It's great the next day.
