The Beto Effect - How To Lose Elections and Influence Nothing

Here was Fredericksburg on a Wednesday:

Rally size ain't everything, but to see that three months before an election seems like something notable.

I hope he does well in Gillespie. There are Beto groupies who follow him around like he's Phish, so it's hard to know how many of the people are are from Gillespie County and how many are libs from Austin/SA.

I get that being in small town Texas is encouraging for small town Texas progressives. but one interviewed for that article said he was one of 5 democrats in Bowie, TX. Making sure they vote by seeing them isn't how this gets done. Not against Cruz, not against Abbott, not against any Republican.  You can be encouraged to vote by a tight race. This race is tight because of Roe first, Uvalde second, and the Grid third.  Get in the suburbs and rake Abbott across the coals over, and over, and over again.

this is to me the biggest value of the stump speech for him but he's getting these viral moments everywhere, not just in rural Texas.

Oh, I agree and am on record upstream in this thread, saying that once he's done with his tour that he needs to spend all of his time in the big metros and the Valley. But this ain't a bad strategy for the opening salvo of the campaign season. Again, small towns do have their progressives, but living out there you feel like you're the only one so why bother to vote? I guarantee there are more than 5 Democrats in Bowie, but I suspect many of them have given up on voting. This gives them an opportunity to find each other and maybe start building something locally.

No matter how much of that people hear all it takes is “Beto will make Texas socialist” and the dip shits in this state will pull the R lever.   Beto’s only chance is if tons of Republican women vote for Beto on the abortion issue.  That is what he should be hammering Abbott on over and over again. “Abbott is letting your kids get slaughtered in school” may also help get that suburb Republican mom to pull the lever for Beto.

Or if any of them are paying electricity bills this summer!

Well, I think there's a damn good chance that Gillespie has the most corrupt "election" of any county in Texas.  You know.  Because their entire committee just quit.

Those high electricity bills are because of Joe Biden and the Dem/socialist policies.  That is all Abbott would say and every Republican Texan would believe him.

i would like to think at a minimum people would realize THERE ARE NO DEMOCRATS IN CONTROL OF TEXAS.

The freeze in 2021 was because President AOC shut down the Texas grid that isn’t connected to the national grid with her Green New Deal button to kill republicans in Texas. Everyone knows this.

I could literally copy and paste this to a text thread with several of my family members (at least one of which i'm pretty sure voted for Biden) and it wouldn't get much, if any, pushback.  We are soooooooo fucked.

My only regret in that exchange is that Beto didn't ask the guy to explain what a communist is.

Exactly. These idiots don’t have a clue. My Trumptard father in law angrily called me a communist the other day because I had the gall to tell him that some of Trump’s own appointees were criticizing some of his actions as president and they were right. He was literally frothing at the mouth - to be fair he had been drinking.

I’m an Air Force veteran, literally “fought” the commies in the Cold War, own a small business as a partner in a very conservative law firm, own property, and was a lifelong Republican until I finally realized the error of my ways about 10 years ago. I’m completely 100% not a communist and he would know that if he wasn’t brainwashed. These people are so fucking stupid they don’t even know what they’re saying.

Now, everything he says, he links back to Abbott. “People need to know why their electricity bills are going up, why their property taxes are going up, why the lights didn’t turn on last February,” he says. “It’s Greg Abbott, and just be really clear about that.”

The campaign should ask people to bring their residential bills along with them to the town halls. Maybe door prizes to the person with the highest bill. Get creative.

From the WaPo article on Beto's cross-state efforts - Whitesboro sounds like a real shit hole.

Things turn tense at the end of that long night in Whitesboro. Beto has stayed around to take photos with constituents. About 60 protesters have stuck it out, too, and a dozen march into the church.

“Hey Beto, we’ve been waiting to talk with you!” says a man with a handgun on his hip. A younger guy has a semiautomatic rifle over his shoulder. Beto meets the man with the handgun in the church aisle and engages with him as he repeats a conspiracy theory that the children in Uvalde died because Biden and the Democratic establishment ordered that the police be held back.

“I think you’re operating in a different reality than the one that we live in right now,” says Beto, only giving up reasoning with the man after he refuses to acknowledge that any police officers died after the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

“I want to tell you personally, you’re not welcome in this town. You’re not welcome in this county,” says the man.

“There were a lot of people here who welcomed me into this town and this county,” says Beto, as his road campaign manager Cynthia Cano ushers him out the door.

“Beto, Beto, why are you running away?” protesters shout as Beto inches his truck through the throng. “Why wasn’t he in an electric vehicle and wearing a mask?” one says.

These people will steer Texas politics only if we allow them. We outnumber them, we always have, and we always will so long as we keep them in their place.

I mean seriously.  There is no point in wasting effort to get people like this to see the light.  I'm glad that Beto is doing what he is doing, but there are probably at least half of the people in the towns he's going to that are like this.  They will NEVER be rational and it's a waste of time.  I wish that weren't the case, but it really seems to be.

He’s not there for them. He’s there to motivate the 10-20% that might vote for him to go ahead and do so rather than sit it out as a waste of time.

does 82-18 instead of 85-15 in all these little counties cumulatively move the needle for his chances?  I’m no math major.

do his appearances actually motivate the right wing loons that would sit it out as not necessary vote and erase any gains?  I’m no poly sci major.

This. There is a non-vocal group of voters that he thinks would show up in November because he cared enough to see their podunk town.

Oh I understand that.  I don't know if the numbers add up, but again, I'm glad he's making the effort.  Just sad that there's a large number of people like this.

Does Beto have security? I would think (hope) he's at least got a couple plain clothes DPS officers assigned to him, but I don't know.

If he does, they are very low key. The only security I saw at his Decatur rally (and we're just as redneck) was a few Deputies and local PD. There were gun toters there, but they stayed outside.

People like this are so damn sad and pathetic. I mean they can believe what they want to believe, but I doubt anyone here would be caught dead at a Abbott or Cruz rally. You’re just not going to convince anyone there so just stay away. These are such shitty people Beto is dealing with. I truly wouldn’t be sad if a meteor fell on them.

We have plenty of people here that think ownership of assault rifles is the most important voting issue. Those people think Abbott is a god.

no, because that guy is growing weed and we don't need him outing himself. wait until legalization - another point Beto should be campaigning on. Vets love them some weed. So do most Texans. Should be a no-brainer issue to drum up a few more supporters.

Needs to attack Abbott at the debate on this. Bathroom Dan is stalling all progress on marijuana, but Abbott could still be blamed for it.

Is this really an issue that will move the vote for him though?  Not saying I don't agree with it, obviously, but are there that many voters that are either a) not voting because no one is hammering this issue or b) would change their vote from Abbott to Beto over marijuana? I'm not plugged into that issue, so it very well could be, but it seems like that's a side note at this point.

i doubt it's so much that, but it could cause some people who wouldn't otherwise vote see that a candidate polling well and will change the rules in their favor to get out and vote

Look up how many people showed up in the Oklahoma primary in 2018 to vote for the marijuana state question which was pretty much a lesser version of recreational marijuana.
