Well I have to start lying to people about what I am doing over the Holiday in order to avoid the looks of pity, and declining insincere invitations. Apparently getting drunk with your dog on Thanksgiving is frowned upon in today's society.

Not in my America, goddammit. Pics of dog?

I envy you......seriously

Relaxing at home, watching football, catching a killer buzz, hanging with your dog, and zero responsibilities

Damn you, you lucky bastard \,,/

Doing it at my moms for the last time (I hope). It’s a pain taking everything there to cook but she has room for everyone. My pool is almost finished, then it will be at my house.

Usually it’s fun with lots of alcohol but my SIL invited her parents and by proxy her recovering addict brother who has multiple issues. Guessing bringing the margarita machine would be frowned upon.....

I'm a recovered alcoholic and I would have no problem with people drinking at Thanksgiving. If he is newly clean/sober it may be an issue but don't assume that you need to lock up the booze. My wife is a normal drinker and honestly the presence of alcohol doesn't even register in my mind, but then again I've been abstinent for almost 8 years.

I'd ask him if it's an issue.

Just because we lost our whisky privileges doesn't mean everyone did.

Flying to DFW to drive to Commerce for a Tuesday after Thanksgiving thing with 3 of my sisters and other extended family.   Then up at 2 am Wed to drive back to DFW.

I'm not saying there is life there east of I 45.  Talk about nothing to do.  Not even any football on.  And of course the wine will be terrible.

That's how I see it. If there was a family member I liked who may not see the next string of holidays I would definitely make a point to see them, otherwise why put yourself through a whole bunch of bullshit.

So...Chesthair has the day off today, right?

Reporting in...

The hillbillys rolled in saturday and came to the wrestling tournament.  Wife had to pay their entrance fee because they didnt want to pay the $3 at the gate.  I avoided them.  After the tourney me and the boy went to our friends house because they "needed our help".  Translated: I went over there to hang out, drink beer and not be home.  The texts from the wife started after a few hours and we went home.  Went straight to bed.  So far, so good.

Sunday they wanted to go to babe's so of course i paid for the 6 hillbillys to eat, and complain, about the food.  I grabbed the boys when we went home and put up outside xmas decorations (i.e. sat on the patio and drank).  Went straight to bed.  I think i might make this happen!

Monday, hillbilly thanksgiving day, started with me getting up early to get the bird and the ham ready.  Got the BGE fired up and everything ready for 4 hours on the patio "watching" the smoker, i.e. drinking.  Went to open the lid on the egg and the top dome kept on going and shattered.  Damn!!!  Oh wait, i have the backup smoker.  Ok, fired it up and went to work.  Stayed out back until 2 pm when dinner was served.  Ate dinner then the female hillbillys went shopping and i hung out playing video games with the boys, i.e. drinking.

Luckily i am at work today and they are packing up and leaving.  I would give myself a B+ on my efforts.

However, the hillbillys are leaving us with a great gift...hillbilly brother in law got here with a fever and a cold...now all of us have colds!

My favorite is when people don't purchase or help prepare any of the food yet find a way to complain about it. If you don't chip in, you can STFU.

This is my Aunt. We leaned on her to make salad one year and she stopped at a convenience store on the way and got a bag salad, showed up drunk, and then was put out because the salad sucked.

Who the fuck would complain about Babe’s?  That shit is outstanding.

Only the wife and I this year, like last year and the year before, etc...  eating, watching parades and football, may even be some sex if she leaves the room.

My In-Laws usually do Thanksgiving. Honestly they're great people to hang with. No issue there.

This year they said they're not cooking.  So I thought we'd do something small and watch the game.  Nah, now they're talking about taking us all up to Windstar in OK.  For Thanksgiving...not sure if that sounds fun or not.

Oh man.   My parents are Winstar fans.  Since they discovered it, they rarely stay with me for more than a day when they come to visit.  They say hi, take one of our cars and go up there.   I have joined them a few times.  It can be a horrible place.  The crowd is a typical casino crowd.  It used to be that the food was the worst part of the experience (along with the unacceptable antes on the table games).  Other than El Fenix, there was nothing to eat in the place unless you liked the fried bologna at Toby Keith's restaurant.   BUT, they recently added a Micky Mantle's / Kirby's set up.   Now, there is a quiet place to get legitimate cocktails, nice wine, and upscale steakhouse fare.  The happy hour is terrific (excellent lamp chops).  If you go for Thanksgiving, be sure to eat there.   Do not eat at any of the hotel restaurants or buffets if you can avoid it, except for maybe a basic breakfast.

I have not been to the nightclub, but we did try their attempt at a Vegas style pool lounge party one weekend night last summer.  It was laughably sad.  I actually felt sorry for them.  They had the LED lights, dancing girls, all of that.   And a bunch of senior citizens sitting on the lounge chairs probably wanting them to turn down the music.

Luna is 80lbs and wont get in the car so I have to dead lift her into it. She's 3 but acts like an older dog. Cherish every moment you have.

I wonder if at one time or the other Luna didn't fall trying to get in the car.  When Rocky was about 3 we opened the back door of the truck and called "load up"!

As usual Rocky came flying up to the truck to jump in but misjudged something and his front paws slid and he nailed the hell out of the floor board just below his ribcage, he let out a yelp and got on in the truck.  We noticed not too long after that when we would load up he would come up to the truck and put his front paws in, and then look over his shoulder waiting for us to lift the rest of him in.  (Yep, spoiled as could be :()

Wow! Yours has a lot more fur, but otherwise almost the exact same dog.

Probably just the angle making her mane look extra fluffy. She's pretty small for a white German shepherd at 52lbs. Rescued her 10 years ago so she's going on 11. One Christmas at a time with her at this stage.

I feel you there. We have a border collie that turns 15 in a couple weeks, last year my wife had a mini breakdown over the holidays that it might be our last with her. Looks like we are getting another one but time is definitely not on our side anymore.

Our main issue is managing appearances.  My parents are divorced and fucking hate each other, and her parents are married.  I have a lot of extended family on my dad's side who live within an hour of us, and they're a god damned hoot, so I usually try to add that to mix.

There's not that much drama other than trying to figure out who gets what day.  We came up with a system where every 3 years one set of parents gets to pick their choice of day between Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.  We try to give her folks a few extra days (usually in the post Thanksgiving weekend) to make up for my family getting more individual specific holidays.  My dad always takes Thanksgiving (doesn't give a shit about Xmas), and my mom always takes Xmas (doesn't give a shit about Thanksgiving), but whenever it's her folks year to take first pick, they can never make their minds up, and that's where the drama starts.

If I try to get things wrapped up so everyone can have a plan and move forward with life, my MIL blows up, and accuses me of having to control everything, and guilt trips my wife over it.  Then she acts like my family always gets favoritism (we spend far more casual time with my wife's family throughout the year) because she's incapable of seeing anything beyond her tiny self-centered worldview.  She's just a generally negative and unappreciative person who constantly judges the outside world, but holds her little clan (which I can never be part of) to a different standard.

My FIL, on the other hand, is a fucking blast.  He's always cooking up something crazy and getting Bloodys, beers, and rye flowing early.  Eventually, my MIL will start in with "JESUS BOB.  HOW MUCH HAVE YOU HAD TO DRINK" and he starts yelling.  Or, if her only extended family (aunt/uncle and 2 cousins from Chicago) are home, there will be an inevitable political conversation in which her cousins (who are intolerantly left wing - and I say this as a left winger) tell my father in law (who is basically just uniformed and sorta populist, but likes Trump) that he's a racist, and yelling happens.  This is when I go out to the kitchen and start watching football.  Then my wife comes at me later and says "you know, it would be nice if you were a little more engaged with my family".  When I point out to her that her 26 year old brother who still lives at home spent all but 2 hours of the day smoking weed and playing video games in his bedroom, she says "he can do that", openly acknowledging the double standard and revealing that this whole spiel came from her mom.

We've already done my mom's (last Saturday) and will see my dad on Thursday.  Friday is the big meal with her family, and the Chicago contingent (at least her aunt and uncle) will be back.  Chicago uncle (grew up in same town where her folks did and still live) will want to watch Iowa/Nebraska, so at least someone else will be making the call to put football on.

chesthair should be live streaming his Thanksgiving. For our amusement I mean science.

Anyone coming to our house on Thanksgiving will need to accept the following:

  • apple brined, hickory smoked turkey (go someplace else if you want it deep fried)
  • a cornucopia of craft beers, wine, bourbon & whiskey
  • football on the TVs. All day
  • when the sun sets, the outdoor xmas lights are turned on & the vinyl classic holiday LPs go on the turntable
  • drinks around the fire pit while we stare at the stars

Is this a formal invitation to all of us Surlies?

It was the first 10-15 times, now it's predictable and aggravating.

This happens almost every time we get together with them.  Whether it's the holidays, or at their boat on the Mississippi.  The annoying part is that my MIL is almost always the only one who is having any issue with it.  Once he starts to have fun, she just sniffs it out and tries to start shit, ruining it for everyone.  Of course, he could choose not to respond, but I'm not sure he's capable of holding his emotions in.  My wife has even gotten on her about just not being a bitch when everyone else is having a good time.

My advice would be to do whatever you were going to do, with or without him.  I quit drinking several years ago, and while I appreciated my friends' consideration in not wanting to drink around me, I told them that I felt more uncomfortable if they didn't drink than if they did.

Got the arsenal ready for the trip Wednesday. I won’t drink both bottles of bourbon, but a free loading cousin may show up and I need to make sure I have some for myself.

Add a handle of plastic jug whiskey to the mix. Swap the contents with a bottle of Bullett. The freeloaders will think they are drinking the good stuff while laughing at you behind your back for drinking the cheap stuff.

Recovering addict as in recently trashed his parents house while they were on vacation and sold stuff for drug $, multiple rehab stints (typically leaving mid program), and other psychological issues that we’ve heard exist, just not a lot of detail type of recovering addict. I’m not even sure if we’re going to be putting knives at the place settings, lol.

I’m sure I’ll have stories for here on Friday.

Thanksgiving with my mom and some of her friends on Thursday. Should be a lot of booze, great food and great conversation.

Her last husband's (who is the father of 2 of my siblings) family is doing Thanksgiving Saturday.

And - I really like the folks - we're still family and still get along - they are super fun, non judgmental and will be more great food and booze, but I would need to hitch a ride and they are planning to leave at noon on Friday. It's a 2 and a half hour drive with shitty cell service.

I also already attended his wedding in October which took place during the Baylor game.

Kind of getting sick of having to choose between family events and Horns games. I mean I know it's Baylor and Kansas but c'mon man... you went to UT (he's a shitty, cynical, fair-weather fan).

A lot of bars recently in Dallas got in trouble for doing it with Taaka and Grey Goose.

Never change, Dallas. Anything to make a dime off of pretentious taste.

Wife asked her mom to bring rolls. My MIL said she can't because she doesn't get paid until the 26th. She can't fucking afford rolls.

If you were a good son and it was your actual mom you'd loan her the money. But you're not... you're an asshole.
