Llogg, you and I both know studies are almost always initiated with an agenda. Even ones you support.

As I stated in my edit, I’m not tracking down the studies referenced in the article because it would take more time than I’m willing to put into something which would have no impact on your opinion.

Edit: Also, what we know about the age of personality development may have something to do with the division used in the article. It may not be as arbitrary as you think.

Having been involved in research a little bit I disagree with your assumption about study design. I will allow that studies where there is a financial incentive for one outcome will be more likely to have bias in design, but I can't imagine such an incentive in this issue.

I did not say the age cut off was arbitrary. I said the distinction between abuse and acceptable spanking is arbitrary.

Well, he did review 38 studies to come to his conclusion but maybe that one you referenced wipes out all that data.

Basically, any discipline can have an arbitrary distinction between acceptable and unacceptable.

When you’re spanking your kid you have to ask yourself if you’re spanking them to teach them a lesson or if you’re spanking them because you’re frustrated and it’s the easiest and laziest way to let out your frustration.

I’ve spanked my son twice and each time it was because I was the one that lost his cool. It didn’t teach him anything other than to fear his dad instead of trust his dad.

I don’t believe spanking your kids occasionally will have any significant long term negative ramifications. I doubt its efficacy as a disciplinary strategy.

As I said, his inclusion criteria basically cherry picked studies to review that would lead to his preferred conclusion.

To your second point, that's why the study I linked (which was a prospective study, not a meta-analysis of retrospective studies) made the spanking binary. Never spanking is not an arbitrary point along a spectrum.

Anyway, have a good Thanksgiving I'm done.

Yeah, I am kind of in your camp.  My children have only been spanked collectively three times ever, and it was always my wife just to be sure given her much calmer demeanor and size (she's only about 100-105 maybe soaking wet and long and skinny) , as we decided that long ago as a last resort or specific situation that might necessitate that kind of discipline.  I can imagine there may be specific situations with specific children that might make me believe spanking can work, but at least for our family, it definitely isn't very needed or helpful in my opinion.

I also believe that if AP's initial situation was on video somehow, his entire career would have been likely over.

Meh. My kids get spanked when it’s warranted.  The vast majority of the time is grounding/taking away something, but they know they fucked up if they get a spanking.  Usually after one physically harms another   A quick pop on the bottom with my hand gets their attention while they go sit.

Spankings in question are weak af, especially compared to when I fucked up as a child - although even those weren’t anything to write home about. Worst ever were swats in middle school.

I don’t know that it will continue for mine when it gets to a switch or belt, likely not.

I can say it’s typically a parent that doesn’t spank that has the out of control showing out little shitheads. It’s highly likely they don’t discipline at all, which is the real cause, but they are the never spanker group so they are lumped in with the “other methods” group. What AP is doing is not spanking or disciplining, it’s beating his “children”.

There's a big difference between a spanking, and a beating. I was spanked as a kid. I dunno if I would spank my own kids, but I wouldn't really look down on others who did spank theirs, it really depends on the kid and the parents and the situation. I think some kids really are sensitive and smart enough that just talking to them can be a good deterrent, and likewise there are some really thick headed kids out there that don't get the message without a spank.

That said, All day doesn't "spank" his kids. He fucking abuses them. Guy is a fucking moron. I don't doubt that his "spankings" are really violent. He's a fucking football player, why the fuck does he need to bring an outside object into discipline? Last time he did that, he fucking cut open his son's ballsack with a stick. Fuck that asshole. He's the same dumbass who chose OU over UT, so his decision making has always been suspect.

  • 3 years later...

It’s weird- the first incident, where he beat his four year old son so bad…if he had done that to a dog- strapping it hard a couple dozen times with a switch, causing bloody welts,…would anyone defend Peterson? Yet, there are people defending him after he did that to his son. I don’t get it.

The brainwashing that most of our country endured is the cause. This is why all religion is evil. People actually think that physically assaulting your children is a necessary part of raising them. Most Christians didn't blink when they heard that Peterson lacerated the genitals of a toddler. The man should have already been locked up for many years.

good lord.  Celebrity Net Worth has him at $1 million.  either way, he did not spend his money wisely.

Real Estate

After trying to offload his home in Texas for four years, Peterson finally succeeded in selling the mansion in 2020. It was originally listed for $8.5 million in 2016, but eventually it sold for about $4.5 million. This was about $500,000 less than what he originally paid for it back in 2013. Spanning 10,582 square feet, the mansion boasts six bedrooms, a library, a wine cellar, a theater, and a motor court. Additional highlights include a game room, bar, and a swimming pool.

In 2021, it was reported that he had listed a second property in Texas for $5.3 million. This home is in Houston, and Peterson originally purchased it for $3.4375 million back in 2016. Located in the neighborhood of Rivercrest Estates, the home features traditional architecture and sits on 3.5 acres of land. It also boasts 11 bedrooms and 11,384 square feet of living space. Additional features include a wine bar, an aquarium, an elevator, a private theatre, an indoor basketball court, a gym, hydrotherapy immersion tanks, a freshwater pool, a golf putting green, and a four-bedroom guesthouse.

The fact that Adrian was selling off his properties over a short period of time shouldn't come as a surprise, given that he was struggling with considerable financial issues at the time. These assets were almost certainly liquidated in order to pay his debts.

Financial Issues

In 2019, a lawyer representing Peterson confirmed that the football star was essentially broke after "trusting the wrong people" with his finances. The news broke after a lender in Pennsylvania sued Adrian seeking repayment of a $5.2-million loan. The Pennsylvania lender claimed that Adrian used some of the money to repay a payday loan company. With interest in lawyer fees, the plaintiff is seeking $6.6 million from Adrian. According to the terms of the $5.2-million loan, Adrian was supposed to pay it back within four months at a 12% interest rate. While this news was breaking, it was also reported that he had been ordered to repay a $2.4-million loan to a lender in Maryland.

Love it when idiots put their private business on blast then complain that's it's their business.  Like, y'all some assholes for watching me smack my wife in public -- mind your business!  As if it's totally okay to smack your wife and the only problem is that you did it in public.  Fuck off.

not to kick the bear, but VY had very similar circumstances.  although he only made about $35M from the NFL and another $30M from endorsements.

VY claims his uncle stole/ hid/ mismanaged a large portion of his NFL money as well.

and in his last season where he was the Philly backup and then the players went on strike, VY took out something like a $2M payday loan "until the next season"  well, the next season never came for him, and thats why he ended up getting sued and lost most of his stuff (literally in this case, they sent the sheriff in to grab anything of value).

although VY claimed and still claims that his signature was forged on the payday loan.
