Surprised there wasn’t a thread covering all things sammich (at least that I could find) and, as I went on an expedition of sorts yesterday, I figured I’d kick things off.

Drove up to Philly for the day to dive into Cheesesteaks. We skipped the two most obvious tourist traps and instead tried a bunch of local favorites:

- Woodrow's
- Jim's
- Ishkabibble's
- John's Roast Pork
- Cosmi's Deli

Though Woodrow’s is a newer (hipster) joint, their meat/cheese ratio was insanely good and, if not for Cosmi’s making a near perfect sandwich, it would have taken the day:

I’ve determined that Jim’s is only good when drunk, and we were sadly sober so it sucked (no pics). We opted for a chicken steak at Ish’s and we’re damn happy for it:

We’re gonna absolutely have to come back for the roast pork sandwiches at John’s, but this day was about cheesesteak and theirs was solid. Toasted sesame bun did not disappoint:

Great work. I love themed food crawls and have done crawdads, raw oysters, tamales, Schwarma, crispy tacos, chicken wings, and I don't know what else.

Rarely sober though. 😉

Little know fact:  Delaware Subs sells their large rolls ($1.35), which makes 2 sammiches for average people who can't eat an entire horse.

Not Amoroso, but not bad.  Better than can be had at any local grocery store, or any bakery that I've found, for that matter.

Torta Al Pastor:

1) buttered and griddled bolillo with chipotle mayo on one side and refried beans on the other

2) guacamole and pastor meat, which has itself been griddled with onions and pineapple

3) lettuce and cotija

4) pickled jalapenos and red onions

No chance that our right tackle is related to the owner of Cosmi's deli is there?  That place was greatness this summer although I agree with you that Woodrow's was the choice for portions size.
